I can confirm that method to disable 8.3 filenames also works to re-enable them.
Of course, after rebooting for NTFS to re-initialize itself, it will work only for files created from then on - so I had to copy all music files...
But hey, important thing is that now the problem is solved: all error messages are gone and cover art can be 'wallpapered' as well - tnx Peter for trying to help and to audiodidakt for the hint!

simply 'touching' the file to update date/time or 'moving' it apparently does not work...

>how are youre listing experiences with xxhe josef ?? to be honest I was extremely skeptical of XX: I was used to 'old' foobar over ASIO and did not know about XX at all until I noticed that I am not able to listen to music anymore - it just wasn't fun..... In fact, I had to resort to DSP trickery to make it listenable... only after I run into horrible problems with 'old' foobar (finding out that some things even made it 'not bit-perfect') did I find out that many people are not that happy with ASIO in general (Peter being extremely vocal on the subject  ) and did I learn about WASAPI so i decided to finally give 'new' foobar a try... unfortunately, it just did not work very good in my setup: I had to increase all buffers to maximum and still I would get pops/clicks randomly... then I again bumped into this vocal guy Peter who on some forum provided an explanation (or at least a very plausible theory for this: 'shared' vs 'exclusive') so I decided to try his XX which, quite frankly, looked pretty clunky compared to other audio players (no offense Peter) but, hey, in the end it's only important how it sounds.... which, btw, was another thing I had to get over, as, in theory, a software player should not have a big influence on sound quality: after all, 'bits are bits'....(yeah, right) well, I'm glad I did try it and I promptly bought it: it truly is a class above any other player out there... (and I did try a lot of them...) I am still in the mode of re-defining my reference points and did not have time to try playing with Q1 and other settings at all (just running 'unattended') so I will stop here but suffice to say that XX achieved the most important thing: music is again fun and it makes you want to listen more & more & more and then, some more..... |

that's going to take a while...
before you start copying everything, and perhaps to help others who might need this, you can check if registry setting is being applied with 'dir /X': that should show both 'normal' and 8.3 filename (if it exists) in dos prompt...

G'day Peter,
I have a confession to make ... for quite a number of versions now ( at least as far back as 0.9w-7 and probably much much earlier ), whenever I access albums across my LAN I get the following message windows:
ChangeWP ~ Error 00: startIndex cannot be larger than length of string. Parameter name: startIndex
followed by ..
ChangeWP ~ 1720:DATA:\\MUTHA\Data_1
Those two error windows come up for each track played, and left unacknowledged simply cascade upon each other.
The playback is fine, and the artwork shows up in the appropriate panels within the GUI, but no wallpaper change occurs as you would expect. Those same albums played on the local PC behave normally.
The fact that no-one else had brought this to your attention had me thinking it was unique to my LAN environment here and I have been trying to figure out what might be causing it here. I've run out of ideas though, and with recent discussions about ChangeWP thought it time to mention it.
If anyone else runs a LAN at home could you try playing an album from across it and see if it works for you.
I should also add that even under the XP partition of my main music server ( dual boot ) I get similar messages ( although the "1720" is a different number then ) when accessing across the LAN.
Perhaps the impending 0.9x-6 fixes this ?

Also the X3 file please. And ... thanks. The following logs are the result of playing a single track from one of my LAN PC's called 'BURNA'. To access the album, I went via the 'Library' button to the left of the 'Play' button and navigated to the album, then chose a single track. The second error window had a "1626" in it at the front this time. After getting the first set of error messages I stopped XXHE, and then restarted it again, but this time accessed a different album on another PC on my LAN called "MUTHA". Hope you can follow this. Not sure what you mean by 'drive letter'. My network shares mostly have a name of some sort for them rather than a plain letter. Thanks Peter, Russ |

Yep, I've already seen it.
But don't you recall you had a problem with that long ago, and that the solution was in the area of a drive letter ? or was it just another name ? or a name without spaces ? there was something ...
Anyway, I think this is solveable, because the most important is that the Short Names are worked out properly. Only the part of the Share Name is not, but I can attack that myself I assume.

Yep, I've already seen it.
But don't you recall you had a problem with that long ago, and that the solution was in the area of a drive letter ? or was it just another name ? or a name without spaces ? there was something ...
Anyway, I think this is solveable, because the most important is that the Short Names are worked out properly. Only the part of the Share Name is not, but I can attack that myself I assume.

My problem eons ago was due to using spaces in the share name and I haven't been using spaces since. I seem to recall it was accessing the albums via that 'library' button also. I haven't tried simply dragging and dropping into the playlist .. perhaps that might show different results. Will try later. The fact that it happens across my whole network and using different PC's to initiate the play process suggests its systemic to my LAN. There's no urgency on this one Peter. Work on it when you can. I've been living with the bug for many a month now and I don't access the other PC's too often these days, but it would be nice to get it fixed as It might offer some alternatives for data storage.
