ChangeWP errors

I am getting weird 'length' errors with latest version and any WAV file. (see attachment)
Seems to be related to spaces within filename (and/or folder name). If I rename the file to something simple e.g. 'test.wav' then error goes away.

Indeed the data in the second picture doesn't look right. Can you t ell me what is the "\Frank" part in there ? I mean, is it a folder or a file name ?

Then, do you say this did not happen at earlier versions ?

If so, are you a 100% sure you didn't mix files from an earlier install with the current one ? If you are not sure, please put a new install in a new folder and try again.

Of course, looking at this, other things are the matter. But that seems so unreal to me. You are using normal Vista ? And which Engine ?

If the above doesn't help, please switch on logging (Settings Area) and post the XX log file from the moment where it happens. If you are using Engine#3, please also post the X3 log file.

It was file name (Frank Sinatra - What's New.wav).

Of course - I always create a new folder. But to be sure, now I tried again and run into all sorts of issues...(XX crashing etc)

In the end, I had to delete files in Users/AppData/Local/Phasure folder and was able to get it running - However, the problem is still there... (notice also a new message in CaptureNewInstall1.jpg - I only get it when XX starts...). After clicking OK in all these eror dialogs playback goes OK until next file - then I get those 2 error messages again, and so on for every file.... the music however keeps on but you can imagine what my screen looks like after 20 songs (there are 40 error dialogs and they all need want to be clicked on....)

I've created a test case to make it easier for you: I put a single file in C:\TEMP and try to play it - I cannot see anything suspicious in log files but maybe you can....

In version 09-X4 I also get CaptureNewInstall.jpg error when it starts up but I do NOT get all these other messages!

First about that "could not get parent path" you're having now. This is about the files indeed being in a "one down" opposed to the root only, which should be "two down".
But, no problem here in the end.

I recall that I compiled ChangeWP for another version of Dot-Net. I am not sure though because I didn't document it.
Do you have Dot-Net 2.0 installed ? NOTE that I don't say you should, but I recall it was compiled for 3.0, while XP users wouldn't have that. I never received compaints though, and can set it back easily. You know what, below it is.

Don't think so - Vista comes with 3.0 and I believe my machine has been upgraded to 3.5 SP1: could that be the issue?
Can you download .Net 3.5 SP1 and see if you get the same?

New ChangeWP.exe did not work.
Also, as you suggested I created a completely new folder and it didn't help either.

However, I was able to temporarily get rid of problem by de-selecting 'show cover art' in Settings: Apparently this would get XX confused when there is no cover art in folder with music files?

I have checked the compile versions (with backups) and that is not the problem. But I found this :

The actual problem is that your system, with apparently the 0.9x-5b version only, cannot translate Windows long paths into Dos 8.3 short paths anymore. And I can't see in the code whatever I did to change that, and besides I don't think anyone else is bugged by this.

The combination of the environmental parameters make me say "impossible", but your log files clearly show it (mainly the XX log file). You could compare it with older log files if you have them, or with those coming from the XX version that work. Focus on the "Short path initiated" lines, which would have turned your Frank Sinatra etc. into Frank~1 or something. Instead now the spaces remain, and besides other things going wrong, I anticipate on the spaces not being there, and use it as delimiter. Well, not impotant, but that's why only "Frank" comes out.

I have Googled a bit for reasons, but can't find real answers. I know though that not all, say, disk interfaces react the same to long Windows names. For the same matter gong the other way around my not work. I have never heard of it ...

Where you an help me, is think of what -in this area- could be special to your machine or network, or disks you use. For example, disks emulating CDRoms are prone to these kind of problems. You might see it because Windows sorting doesn't work (files list by order of date creation instead of alphabet on name). Might you know it, Novell is such an example.

Obviously it must be me doing it somewhere, but I can't think of where. Possibly shutting off the services makes a difference ? I can't see from the log file whether you did, although I see the OSD Running Time applied (while Attended <- not good but never mind) so I might expect the services not running. A matter of unticking that checkbox and you'll know.

Here I never saw it, and as said, I don't think anybody has the problem. But you have. So please try to see where you are special !

PS: The problems you received from getting to the other version are because of the same reason : the data being wrong (which is in files already), and the tracks or folders like from "Frank" only just do not exist. In 0.9x-5b it would work out to the same, so you don't encounter the problem there (but things won't be unique in the end, so that never can work). Good that you found how to get rid of those problems !!

where dos 8.3 files are not created anymore

yes, must be it - I _do_ have those useless shortfilenames disabled - thanks for hint audiodidakt!

I've had those disabled for last 2+ years and never run into a piece of software that still requires them - Looks like I'll have to re-enable it only for XX

I'll see if method described on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/Q121007 works to undo the change....

But Peter, really, why is XX using those? Days of 16-bit applications are long gone and XX is 32-bit isn't it?

Hehe, but Josef, why would you want to elininate them ?
This is a serious question; Working long enough with PCs to know they never bother.
If this is about some performance reasons (and I think I heard that somewhere) ... where does *that* bother you ?

Why I use them ? rather simple : what you saw cut was a "parameter" and they are bound to a maximum length (in certain environments). So this is the means to overcome it. However, orginanally, and this is more important, it was born to overcome the Unicode problems in passing parameters. I still wouldn't know how to do it otherwise. So, such parameters won't enable the transfer of Unicode (again, in the environment I work), and the trick is to pass the short name, and dig up the original name at the other side.
