Galleries is a Problem

Hi Peter - I have to say I have not really used Galleries in the past but recently I decided to give them a try. But there appears to be a problem.

For me the best way to use Galleries is to set the cursor (say) on "Rock" (see attached) and then add what I want from the play list area into Galleries. It works well because the full path spec is used so "stuff" gets organised properly in Galleries (hope that makes sense)

So far so good.

But it does not work out that way because yesterday I went through the whole "Rock" directory (as displayed in the playlist area) creating a directory in Galleries call "American Rock". Great I thought it had worked but it had not.

Creating the Gallery items for what I wanted is not a problem it all works fine but there is a problem. I had thought that if I put the cursor on "Rock" that everything (album art) that is displayed in the playlist area would be everything that is in the "Rock" directory including everything that is in the sub directories. However it is not. Look at the attached and you will see that everything that is in the "4 Hero" sub directory is shown in the playlist area but none of the contents of the "Beach Boys" directory is shown - not one album - but all the Beatles albums are shown. And that is the way it goes all the way down the directory - everything that is in the root (I think) is shown but randomly (seemingly) the contents of some sub directories are shown and others are not. I cannot see anything in the directory structure that could be a problem it is after all really simple.

So "Galleries" would work for me if everything was shown as I would expect it to be but as it is it would be so time consuming to set up the Galleries directories that it would not be worth the effort.

Hi Paul,

I understand what your probem is, but I do not understand how it emerges; over here the very same works although I have a few individual Beach Boys albums in the "Rock Root" as well. So I have both versions (root + sub folders) and that's only more "difficult" I'd say.

Troubeshooting this comes down to showing your original folder structure (Beach Boys only) and the same from the resulting Gallery Structure. Do this with normal Explorer please.

Additionally, can you tell me how you put the albums to the Gallery. I mean, what I would do is having them showed all in the Gallery Area (you call that the Playlist Area, but that is elsewhere (haha)) which already starts with a possible similar problem, because with me they will all show, and possibly with you not to begin with. And than it won't even be obtained in the Gallery (structure). Understand ?

If it is not clear, let me know.

Below 1. Embedded Explorer after pointing to the Rock Gallery, 2. the Galley Folder Structure of it, 3. the Gallery Area for the part concerned (I counted, they are all there).

Peter I hope this is what you are looking for.

The way I put albums in the Gallery is this:

First in the Gallery directory I create a sub directory called say "American Music". I then click on "Rock" in the left XX pane so that all the album art of all the albums from "Rock" and all its sub directories is shown (or should be) in the right (Galleries) pane. Now lets say I want to transfer all the 4-Hero albums into the "American Music" gallery directory I highlight all the 4-Hero albums (in the right pane) then right click and go through the sections that creates short cuts as required in the "American Rock" Gallery. It works fine not only creating short cuts to the 4-Hero albums but also creating a "4-Hero" subdirectory in the Gallery directory.

Why would I want to 4-Hero in the American Music directory? - well of course I wouldn't because they are English ha ha

If it works for you this way for the 4-Hero albums, I see no reason why it wouldn't for the Beach Boys.
Still it wouldn't be my procedure because somehow you're working in an idirect fashion when working from the Embedded Explorer, PLUS you can easily make the mistake to work with the Gallery there instead of the Original Location(s) and I wonder whether you'd notice (read : whether this can be seen easily).
I work like this :

Get the music Root of the volume concerned and put that in the field at the bottom (Library Area active). Now I press Search. Now undoubtedly all albums in there will show in the Library Area. Beach Boys pass by (you see no sub folder structure because all is presented in flat fashion to you) and you select them and put them to the Gallery as per your own description. Can't fail - can't make mistakes.

But maybe this is now more vague BECAUSE of the flatness. Notice though that you can work a sort of other way around because when you have the Library Area filled like I described, you can rightclick an Item (= usually Album) and from there choose "Show in Embedded Explorer". So now you see the same context as your way of working enforces to begin with.

Now we still don't know what is the matter, unless you used the Gallery itself to obtain those Beach Boys, which obviously aren't (all) in there at first. So this shot will be seriously too long.

Using search works fine so no problems but it would be a problem if there were Beach Boys album in the root and Beach Boys was not mentioned in the file name - not a problem for me though as all mine are in beach boys subdirectory.

The procedure to add the albums to where I require in the Gallery works but what does not work is that not all albums are shown in the right hand pane (you also call Gallery?)  i.e. the album art from some but not all sub-directories is missing. That is not a big deal as I now use the search command to bring up the albums I want to add as you suggested.

So problem closed even though the original problem remains - but is not an issue now I know it exists ha ha. Originally I went through the Rock directory adding stuff to the Gallery not realising that I was missing a load of albums because they were missing in the Gallery.

If you only know that I don't think it is because what you take for granted as not working and be fine with, is not fine at all. I guarantee you : you "do" something wrong. And if not that, something is wrong with your folder structure which prevents it.

Over here it works all nicely and is explicitly meant to do that. Haha.

OK you just spurred me on to find out what the problem was. Check out the attached and the Beach Boys are now shown correctly.  To cut a long story short I ended up re-setting and setting share settings on the "Music" directory. There should not have been any problem with the original settings but having done that the Beach Boys thumbnails have appeared.  I will take a closer look tonight to make sure the whole directory is correctly shared and that all thumbnails are shown but anyway there it is something to with Sharing but not sure what exactly because it was apparently shared correctly before.

So there it is - definitely done now!!!
