Windows 7: PC automatically reboots after play command in XXHE

Hi Peter,

Last weekend I received Paul Pang USB Audio Grade PCie card. I was already using the normal USB3 PCie card(NEC). I did a de-installation of the ‘old’  USB3 PCIe card driver(NEC) and installed the driver advised for the Audio Grade PCie card(inclusive 5V via Molex plug). When starting XXHE no sound. The NOS1 Driver Control Panel shows no information. So I switched back to the normal USB3 PCie card. I did a new install for the driver. NOS1 Driver Control Panel shows information. It looks like all starts working again. Connecting harddisk etc. But every time after a play command in XXHE, just after the screen changes to black (unattended), the system reboots automatically. When I switched back to the AudioPC standard USB2 port all functioning again. XXHE is working ok… and sound from the NOS1. What steps do I need to take to work with the USB3 PCIe card again?

I suppose the Paul Pang card uses a driver ? I mean, you had to install one for that ? If so, uninstall it, uninstall the NOS1 driver and reinstall that. If not (no PP driver), then I'm a bit clueless at this moment.

Btw, (un)install all drivers in Normal OS Mode !

Why the Paul Pang card doesn't work is something else of course. Maybe others can help out on that one ? (no new topic needed for that ).

But let me know, and maybe we can proceed from your responses.

Hi Johan,

I'm not sure exactly what the cause of the reboot issue, but I may be able to offer a little insight into the driver issue.

Win7 does not natively support USB3, you need drivers for w7 to be able to use a USB3 card, unlike w8 that supports USB3 natively.  Note that Paul Pang links to a win7 driver and a win8 driver for his card which is actually the driver for the NEC chipset on the USB card which may well be the same chipset as is on your normal USB3 card.  Make sure you load the w7 driver because the w8 driver will probably not work too well.

Sometimes we tend to over-think things so the first thing that I would do is to pull out your normal USB3 card without removing the driver and plonk the PPAstudio card straight in there and see if it is recognised by the o/s.  If it is recognised with the existing driver then try to play some music.  If it plays music I would then install the correct driver by going into "Device Manager" and finding the Pang card on the hardware list and then update the driver manually.  Of course if you have trouble with the new driver then you can simply go back into "Device Manager" and "rollback" the driver to the original one.

What I should have said is :

I don't see that you uninstalled the Paul Pang driver, so maybe now the best sequence is :

Uninstall the NEC driver again, uninstall the Paul Pang Driver, reinstall the NEC driver.

I am not sure whether uninstalling/reinstalling the NOS1 driver at the very end can help. It won't harm anyway.

But ...

At the first thing you did (install or uninstall) a Restore Point will have been made by the system; what about just reverting to that Restore Point ? Choose the first in the list of your activitities around this.

This was the first thing i did wrong. I did the (un)install in minimum OS. I switched back to normal mode and did the (un)install.

I did use the Win 7 drivers

I did! Only a harddisk is functioning ok. Except XXHE gives a reboot after a play command.

I am not sure whether uninstalling/reinstalling the NOS1 driver at the very end can help.

I did a (un)reinstall. When I start the NOS1 Driver Control Panel, it gives direct a system reboot.

what about just reverting to that Restore Point ?

I can't find a restore point before the deinstallation of the drivers.

I'll give up!

I was thinking to buy a new motherboard and a i5 processor. I think it's time to replace the old machine. Peter shall I use Windows 8 or do I need to wait for ....?????

What about reverting to that ? It should be the one where all was still OK. And otherwise it should be harmless (but remember that you will loose all your activities regarding installing/uninstalling from of that point). Just try it.

Windows 8 is the thing to go. Avoid 8.1.
And if possible make that i5 an i7.
