Hi Peter,
For guys who want to change over to W8 from 7, is it advisable to upgrade or do a new install? Any other precautions you suggest during this change over?

Hi there Arvind,
First off, I don't think anyone here has the experience of upgrading to Windows 8, let alone comparing with a fresh install. At least I never applied an upgrade. I know though, that obtaining a non-upgrade version isn't even easy. Otoh, upgrade versions can be installed as fresh. It won't be official, but sh*t happens when it's hard to obtain the normal product. But okay, this is another matter to some degree and say out of my scope.
Personally I would never upgrade. This is not only a feeling, but the experience with being able to "see" that the old product is still there under the hood. It may or will bug you at some stage (e.g. when it needs repairing).
Windows 8 is an exception in my view because it is so fragile to get right in the first place. I mean, now we're finally there to let it produce the better sound, what if you won't succeed with that and next can't sleep because "maybe it is because I upgraded".
About general issues we may run into ? I don't think there are, except for maybe the Bluetooth Dongle driver needing some attention. This sure can work, but the exact things to do are not so clear at this moment. But of course this will be worked out when needed. I myself don't use it at the moment because of the "ALL Services shutoff" feature I do use, but like I said in the other topic yesterday, for the LAN there's an exception in the next version (can work under the "ALL ..." situation) and for Bluetooth there can be the exception the same although it will permamently hammer on SQ somewhat because it needs to stay on during playback.
A maybe too long answer ...

I did an upgrade once from W7 to W8, but this was after I tried without success to install W8 on an empty new drive. An upgrade "needs" to see an OS already installed to work properly. So I "cloned" my W7 OS from a different drive, then I did the upgrade. All went well, but I had some troubles removing the W7 files that Windows kept (administrative permissions). I had to "Google" for this removal. What I do now is let the W8 installation start - provided that W7 is on the drive. Then at this screen... http://www.eightforums.com/attachments/f1/f11/1713d1316128030-dual-boot-installation-windows-8-windows-7-vista-w7-3.jpg... I select "Drive options (advanced)" and I delete all the partitions (I don't have the link to show this), then come back to the previous screen and let W8 do its work. The installation process will create whatever partitions it needs and install itself. The fact that the installation program sees W7 is probably kept somewhere on the hard drive, so it will be a fresh install. Hope this help. Alain |

Time for me to jump on the W8 wagon and catch up with you guys! My brother is in town for the weekend so I will have present all the competence needed.
But which version? The standard or the PRO?
Also, is it ok to follow the (by Microsoft) recommended upgrade path from W7 to W8?
-Probably many XX users pondering about this right now, so some guidelines would be nice.

Gosh even though Peter's been able to get XXhighend to work better with W8. What is this everyone thinks W8 is a dog. Even microsoft are coming out with an upgrade to deal with issues(nothing to do with audio probably).
I'm not upgrading yet, if thats what you call it.
Can't help but feel Peter should have his own OS!!!!!
I mean I only run basic W7 no upgrades. Windows is the problem isn't it, same as Apple is the problem. Hate both really.

The upgrade assistant actually allows to purchase W8 and through the process save it as an ISO file to burn into DVD . After that the dvd will be your installer media . Choosing advanced options there is the possibility ( as posted above already ) to wipe out all the partitions of the previous OS ( which AFAIK doesnt need to be activated itself ) and go ahead to W8 S |

What is clear to me at least , is that W8.1 will be an actual "Upgrade" again . Then we will see , and probably someone like me will try it , if to use it or not to use it .
From scratch or not , well we'll see .

Well Pedal the only other way, which Peter also prefers, is get a new W8 license & make a fresh install.

Yep, this is exactly what I did - deleted existing partitions and then formated the drive before creating a new 100GB partition for W8. I know though, that obtaining a non-upgrade version isn't even easy. Otoh, upgrade versions can be installed as fresh. It won't be official... Wouldn't buying an OEM version be OK? Apparently, you can now transfer the license between mobos - very useful for most of us here. Mani. |

Hi Mani,
I have always thought that an OEM license meant that it can't be moved to another motherboard ? It is surely possible to do it, but has that restriction been lifted with a new policy from Microsoft ?
