Peter or anyone else - I am putting together a budget system for my brother. I am looking to use a laptop (i5 at least) with of course XX software. The question is how well does it work? I used to use XX on a lower spec laptop 3 years ago and it worked OK (ish) in attended.

So the question is can I expect it to work OK in Unattended with tweaks set to Ultimate. Just interested to know if anyone has experience of this setup.

Sure does, that's what I run, check my specs. I only run an i3.
Since Peter's latest version it runs cooler with all the tweaks set to Ultimate and in OS minimised, unattended with no glitches. Never had any problems except loading new versions XXhighend due to my ineptitude. In fact I wouldn't call it budget unless you use a cheap DAC, even these are getting very good.
Mine easily beat a Meridian 200 CD transport with my Benchmark DAC.

Hi,
I use laptop Thinkpad W530 with i7-3940; 240G Intel SSD + 512G Crucial SSD with 12mm adapter for my music files; 32 G RAM (16G RAM Disk for Playback Disk + 16G), W8 & 9z-8-1a. Phasure NOS1.
Sound quality: Excellent!
Depends on your requirement on SQ, the highend laptop gives best SQ.

Regards,
Didi

Hey Didi,

That Lenovo seems to be a terrific computer and I´m sure you get a fantastic sound. Have you had the opportunity to compare the SQ of this laptop with a desktop of similar characteristics?.

I´d be interested to know also, in case you have tested it, the differences you have found between:

-SSD vs Hdd for OS and XXHighEnd

-the use of RAMdisk for Playback drive vs the use of a hdd for Playback drive

- the use of W8 vs W7

And finally the use of a preamp with the NOS1 vs the use of the NOS1 without preamp.

I ask you all of this because your setup looks quite different from most people, I´d say even that you are taking the opposite route, of course I don´t want to say that you are wrong.

Best regards,
Juan

My 2 cents: I compared my desktop system (i7, 16gb ram, gigabyte MB, Seasonic power supply) to a cheap (500€) samsung i5 laptop. The laptop doesn't sound as good as the desktop but by a very small margine. I can very well imagine a higher quality notebook like a lenovo can sound equally good as a desktop. That is what I am planing to buy at least.
