I am so pissed at myself. Last night I uninstalled service pack 1 RC and installed the official service pack 1 release, with it came 26 other updates as well. My sound quality has gone from the most neutral sound I'd ever heard back to Hi Fi glare. Adjusting XX settings makes very little difference. Tonight I will uninstall the 26 other updates and hope that good sound returns.

Well, that is a bummer ! But always good to put this in "Playback Tweaks".  Ahum, by pure coincidence I am looking to my left side (why the hell would I do that, there's a printer standing there - no beer, nothing), but what do I see ? A DVD with the written text on it W7 SP1 RC ... So here's a proposition : You a copy of this DVD, I 7 beers (should be sufficient before the real boozing starts). Anyway, let me know whether I can help you with it, because I can imagine you can't find the RC for download anymore.  |

My sound quality has gone from the most neutral sound I'd ever heard back to Hi Fi glare. I did this over the weekend and pretty much experienced exactly what you describe. Hence, I'm back to DB=512, Q1=3 (128 samples) and clockres=Max. I think clockres seems to be making the biggest difference now. Anything under 5ms or so just sounds way too thin and edgy with the official SP1. Mani. |

Hi,
Aligned with Mani. I used to dial up and down both clock res and DB to get a fuller body. I ended up with DB = 512 matching with Juli@ latency of 512 and Q1 = 512 as well. Clock res at 15 ms. Lower than this , way too thin.

I'll give those settings a try but would put the RC back if I can get my hands on it (Peter, sure hope your RC file is for 32 bit?) With RC I was able to get very subtle changes with clock res and buffer settings.

Phew! Not sure RC is necessary cause rolling back the security and OS updates, except for SP1, brought back the neutral sound. Better bring it along though, just in case.  |

Just wondering if others find a difference in SQ between Service pack 1 RC and official service pack 1 without any of the subsequent security and OS updates. As described above i had very much degraded SQ when I had all the updates after service pack 1. Removing the updates provided a much more neutral sound, but official service pack 1 still seems a little different from RC.

the subsequent security and OS updates Can you give names, numbers and dates? This way we can check if we have them installed or not. I am so naive to think updates make your system more secure and better, so I let them do this automatically. Maybe it's true and my system does not sound anymore like it did before because of this... |

Go to control panel and choose windows update; it is the last icon in the list. On the bottom lower left of the main updates page is a link to "Installed Updates". Click on that and all updates will be listed. Am pretty sure they are listed in the order they were installed with the last being listed first. You can also uninstall them from there.
I have a vista partition that I use for surrfing the web and streaming movies so I don't need any W7 updates.
