Peter,

I bought a new MB. The reason 8gb RAM. On my old MB DDR2 was so expensive that buying an new MB with 8 GB DDR 3 RAM was 80 euro cheaper than 8 GB RAM DDR2.

But guess what... The slow sound has come back. I have a new Velociraptor HD and did all the things you mentioned in the BIOS topic. Also i have tried several new BIOS drivers but they do not make any difference. (FLASH)

Here are pic's from my BIOS settings. Any thoughts?

First try to get a good idea of what actually happens. So, listen closely to whatever produces sound. Apply individual changes and re-listen.
Will take some time ... yes

So, let's try a few things my eyes fall on; the sequence is from most suspectbale (ok, through my eyes) to least :

Virtualization Technology, Off (!).

Despite what I said above, the below can be done all in one go to save time. If it helps you could try them individually :

Robust Graphics Booster. Try both On and Off (but you can examine what the default (auto) is of course.

Performance enhance. Try to set that to Off.

PCI1/PCI2 IRQ Assignment. No idea what's behind it, but toggle it to whatever it may be able to switch. Also try to investigate what PCI1 vs PCI2 is.

(G)MCH Frequency latch. Try it to Off.

CE1, Try it On.

C2/C2E, Try it On.

CPU Smart Fan control. You won't like to have this Off, but just try it (nothing will be damaged).

Power On by Ring. Shouldn't do a thing, but you won't be using it either. So, Off.

( PCI Express frequency. Seems a logical influencer. Don't ask *me* how to go about this. I'm not a mobo tweaker  ...
Btw, be ready to be able to reset everything once you start with this (which I would postpone as long as possible, but that's me). )

Hi Gerard,

Does the suggested BIOS settings above by Peter help?

Can you share more information about the slow motion soundddddddd?

1. Was this slow sound just only heard with hires materials or red book + upsampling? The more up sampling rate the slower the sound.

2. Did you try other player such as Foobar? Slow motion should not be heard. Set NOS1 SW 5 to off to activate both channels.

3. If # 2 above is true for you, sorry to say that your mobo is not compatible with NOS1. I had GA 880GA UD3H with faster northbridge than yours. Still slow motion heard.

However if you can fix it please share.

This must be contagious. The other day, for the first time, I got slow sound as well but only with 24/176 and 24/192. 24/88-24/96 was fine. However it went away after rebooting. Of course it had to happen when I had some friends over to listen to my system!
Keep my finger cross, hopefully it will not come back again!

Hi Praphan,

Sorry for the late response (Holiday)  Happy

1: The slow sound only occurs when i upsampel indeed the more I upsampel the slower the sound.

2: I did try Foobar but as said with only redbook nothing is the matter.

So i will wait for Peter’s new MB with 2 processors before i buy something else. I have tried everything i could think of. Out of options i guess.

Does this only happends with Gigabyte MB or others too?

Careful. I don't have time for this really. Well, getting a board like that is not the problem, but exchanging it is. It really takes me hours to built out/in the disks and I'm short on hours already ...

But Gerard, can you tell what your sequence of trials was here ?

Hey Peter,

Well i have set anything that i could set to disabled to disabled. But not one lead to better sound.

Maybe not to use the onboard VGA but than i need to buy a PCI card first. I can wait untill you have time for your new idear. Waited 3 years for the NOS1  Wink  rofl

Hi Gerard,

Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

I understand that you are not successful in fixing the slow sound from your new mobo. Me too. I tried disable and enable setting as much as I can without success. I also moved interface card EX 1095 from one PCIe slot to another just to try out if this can fix slow sound. The last move of interface card led to some damage to my GA 880 mobo. I remembered clearly what I did. I shut down my PC and forgot to unplug the power cord. Then I removed EX 1095 from PCIe x1 and sliced it into PCIe x8 slot. All in a sudden PC boot automatically. While in a puzzle, I switched off the PSU immediately while booting. As a result of this,  this mobo could no longer detect Juli@ card and the network adapter disappeared from the system. However, when I removed the interface card from the mobo, network adapter came back but running without stability. Network connection comes and goes randomly.

Lesson learnt : always unplugged the PSU before playing with the H/W.

Therefore I have never had a chance to fix this slow sound on GA880 since then

I am now using a newly released Gigabyte G1 Sniper mobo for gamer. I run i7 970 hex cores which will be useful for 0.9Z-5 . Before ending up with Sniper I tested some other Gigabyte mobo in which report can be found in other thread.

Slow sound is still a misery for now.

Hi Gerard,

Hope you had a wonderful holiday!

I understand that you are not successful in fixing the slow sound from your new mobo. Me too. I tried disable and enable setting as much as I can without success. I also moved interface card ES 1095 from one PCIe slot to another just to try out if this can fix slow sound. The last move of interface card led to some damage to my GA 880 mobo. I remembered clearly what I did. I shut down my PC and forgot to unplug the power cord. Then I removed ES 1095 from PCIe x1 and sliced it into PCIe x8 slot.

Praphan

Thanx!

So i can try other PCIe slots also. Thought it only could be in the PCIe 1slot. Will do it with care.  Wink

Misery, mistery ... but thinking you merely meant the latter, I agree. But it must be some kind of bandwidth problem on the PCI buss. The stupiest thing of it is that I can incur for it myself on my current mobo, if it's only in its default settings, PLUS I never got round of the source of the problem, because I couldn't find one individual setting which cures it. It is more of them together, and I still don't know whether it is all of them, or one of them can be re-set to normal. This is because it can take such a long time before it starts to happen (over 4 minutes) and then in such a mild form that it really needs a quiet piano before you will observe it.

Let's not forget that Gerard had it too on his "old" motherboard, but only after installing a new OS *plus* sliding in a new SSD, or something like that. On that matter, it just as well could be using an SSD in some north south whatever bridge causing it. In that case flashing the mobo helped, while Gerard actually didn't change any BIOS setting.

So that is why I say that some designers forgot about something (spec) to comply with;
Streaming 32/384 audio isn't all that much for PCI bandwidth, but still it isn't done, normally.
The other day I have been looking for changing the PCI latency on individual devices, triggered by I think Nick who said something about it. Although officially this can't work anymore from off Vista, I think it still can. I didn't have the time to work it out further, but if you ask me, I bet the culprit is in this direction. Something which hogs the PCI buss (can easily be a video card) because of too high (!) latency settings of that (it hogs the buss for say 20ms while audio needed it after 5ms already).

Peter

PS: Gerard, did you bring back that mobo, or is it available for testing ?

Well i can't take it back or maybe i can but i can use it later for my normal pc when the dual processor is bought and tested by you. So i stick with my old MB with 4 GB RAM.

But i will not give up yet.  no It is still in the pc.

Maybe this week i have some time....

Available for testing what do you mean by that? Do you mean you want it?  Happy

I was thinking about that latency stuff. Suppose I can get that running (never mind what it is exactly), you could play with it with some guidance. But this is typicle stuff which may never let boot your system, when not careful.

Ok, so no hurries. Thanks.

Tried the other PCIe 16 slot and that made no difference. Also put in a PCIe videocard and dissabled the onboard in the bios. That also made no difference....
