Vista no go

Hi Peter
I've been a 'follower' of Bert's for many years now (2 entries in his World famous showroom!) & consequently a regular forum watcher (I really find typing frustrating, hence watcher). Needless to say your project has come to my attention! I've just downloaded & extracted your files but they only work for me on XP not on Vista x86 or x64. I run the 32 bit version on my audio laptop. I get the first window when I launch XX which I hit ok on, but it goes no further? Your thought's amigo. I can't comment on the sound yet my XP machine plays through little plastic boxes!

What is your "first window" ?
Any error messages ?

'first window' is XX hi end player with an ok button. When I hit ok there is brief hard disk activity, then nothing. It's the same little box that comes up in XP but when I hit ok the program launches successfully.

IT LIVES...DXSetup did the trick, don't see why I should have been missing anything though! OK so now I have the choice of XP or Vista. Reading your help file suggests that my 'best' option for now is XP running on engine 1 with doubling enabled or not depending on taste. I need to install a fresh OS on my audio machine, so my question is, if YOU had the copy of XX that Iv'e got would YOU load XP or Vista?
For your information, Iv'e not had any instability issues in either OS or engine, apart from those heart stopping moments when it checks out mid track! (& yes I know that's built in) From the 2 brief visits to my sounds room, 1 with XP & 1 with Vista it sounds more 'alive & dangerous' than with Foobar (can I say the F word here) so I'm looking forward to getting my ears on this evening for some serious listening. I must remember to pick shorter tracks though! Well done with this, I look forward to being a licence holder....

Glad you got it working. It was my incomplete outlay why it didn't the first time ...

By itself this is true, BUT, please read this alinea from it :

This #1 Engine is dedicated to bitperfect playback for XP.
It makes use of non-certified audio drivers, like the MME drivers from RME.

Actually this tells that you need an RME Fireface or other soundcard from RME that uses "illegal" drivers, bypassing KMixer. These drivers are bitperfect.
More brands will exist, but I don't know (anymore) which.

Edit :  Actually, Doubling is not possible for Engine#1 ! (the help file neatly tells that )

For your information, Iv'e not had any instability issues in either OS or engine

... which should tell me that you *have* such a driver ...
Important test : can you run tracks larger than, say, 6 minutes 20 seconds, or IOW 64MB ?

I must remember to pick shorter tracks though!

Definitely Vista. More detail, more fine, more stable over different CDs.
But why don't install a dual boot if you have to go from the beginning anyway ? then you can choose ...

But please NOTE : My choice for Vista, is because I left behind the instable XP RME drivers as mentioned. If you have something stable under Engine#1 which is bitperfect at the same time and plays tracks over 64MB ... from theory follows that would be my first choice.
Note : "instable" means : running the player, start something else, and select back (Alt-Tab etc.) the player. Then it stops making sound ... with over 64MB files for 99% sure, with smaller ones, say, 50%.

I can provoke the XX to stop sounding or play several tracks at the same time by clicking "NEXT" immediately after it starts. I did that when just browsing tracks for finding relevant music for my Ipod. If I let a track run for a few seconds before skipping, no problemos. 

It's a good idea to have two partitions on your disc. One for each OS. However I choose to buy two Laptops one with Vista and one with XP. I use my XP Laptop as a RDC and have a visible screen in front of my nose. Here I can see what is going on. No way I can do that with the player Labtop 7 meters away. So it just stays closed all the time.
Hell, you can say a complete Labtop is an expensive gadget as I use it for RDC only. Nothing else at all.
But...if a day should come where Peter finds a XX that sound maybe better than than the pressent, I'll juts swap the machines. Hihaaa.

No difference in stability, and no difference in the running time for the demo version. Remember Gerner, 0.7d.

Ipodilism? Peter have you forgot my Goldwing? That doesn't swallow a full scale system.... And I need deep core music on that horse!

Anyhow it's not more than a playlist I make and convert secretly.

For your information, I played last night on Vista (XX / engine 1) a track of 127mb 12.07mins (Dare I say perfectly). Cancelled, then re-launched XX, loaded the same track & another of 63mb, played the first track again & tried my best to Foo up XX, but whatever I did it kept playing until I hit next, when, surprise surprise it started playing the next track! Seems stable enough to me!? More importantly it sounded REAL good.
