Thanks for the link Marcin. Looks good on paper but like most of these early reports I expect a difference with final production examples. No doubt there will be a premium associated with the new technology and to get the best from them you will need a m/b with appropriate controller. Still, it's a nice advancement and will hopefully drive the prices of their, and other manufacturers, drives down across the board.
The response improvements going from spinning platters to SSD is very noticeable. Going from SSD to these new drives more of an incremental step I expect. Will need to wait a few months I guess.
BTW ... anyone running OCZ drives should make the effort to get on the latest firmware. Only gotcha, is that you need to be on an internet connected PC, so in my case i disconnected the drives from my music server and installed temporarily into another PC. OCZ reckon you shouldn't lose data during f/w upgrade but I took a full backup as a precaution (which wasn't needed).

I use a Vertex2 90GB drive in each of my two 'music servers'. But these are 3.5" SSDs, not 2.5" ones. Does anyone know if there is a potential issue with these 3.5" drives?
Also, how would I know whether these drives are the 34/32nm or 25nm variety without openning them up? Is it just a case of looking at the formatted capacity? Well, mine are 83.8GB. Does this indicate which variety they are?
Any help most appreciated.

More seriously, in that story was something about an "E" in the second half of the serial number. But in the example given I didn't see that "E". But maybe I didn't get it well, and was it just about that "E" which should be there, but isn't (always) ?
In an earlier example that "E" was there though ...

Huh ? do they exist ?? Yep: http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-vertex-2-sata-ii-3-5-ssd.html (although mine are housed in the 'discontinued' case). Test the speed. I don't have any specific software to do this. However, my Windows Index score is 7.2. Looks OK to me, though I doubt it indicates 34/32nm vs. 25nm.... Mani. |
