I had 0.9y-505 running nonstop for several days now on my Vista computer with no problems, that is until XXHE had to do a format change from 16/44.1 to 24/88.2.  So I had to restart play on the first higher rez file and playback is continuing.  However, this may not be a new problem for me as I seem to recall having to restart play on earlier versions of XXHE.  This is a minor quibble.

But I am having no luck with 0.9y-505 on my XP computer.  Except for the GUI, version 0.9y-4 runs fine with my Lynx AES16 and XP, but of course this is using Engine1 or 2.  Does anyone have 0.9y-505 running on XP or am I wasting my time?

Yes, I think you are wasting your time. But this is merely because you should be using 0.9y-5-06 (not 05), and Engine#4 of course. Happy

If that doesn't play, I want to know everthing about it, because I am as far that everything should play now (except "24 bit only" but that's not the Lynx). So, please let me know, and post the X3PB log file when it's not working (it may not say much currently, but we'll see).

Unlike version 0.9-y-4 that at least plays, the latest version 0.9-y-506 does not run under XP.  Trying version 0.9-y-506 results in a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime error that states XXEngine3.exe has encountered a problem.  This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.  I also get another error message that states Fail - Engine #4 did not start within the expected time.  The X3PB log file, which does not say much is provided below.

FYI ...

Updated the existing 0.9y-5-04 running on my study PC ( using Win XP ), with the 0.9y-5-06 files, and everything seems to behave after a quick setup. Haven't done extensive testing on that system but if fires up and I get sound, so I'll conclude that there is no inherent issue with this version running under WinXP.

Cheers,

Russ

Robin Hood,

Apparently this needs additional attention. I don't know how or what yet, but we could start with the below debug version of XXEngine3.exe for you.

Unzip it over your 5-06 install, but first save your current XXEngine3.exe because this debug version won't play. It will create some additional log entries in the X3PB log file though.

Click Play as usual, and wait until the error message appears. Then draw the log file.

Also : let me see what device you choose in XXHighEnd ! (it is sufficient to type it over if it is difficult for you to make a screen copy).

Peter

PS: It is more convenient for me if you just attach the log file, instead of copying the contents into the post. See "Additional Options" in the left bottom corner at making a post. Thanks.

Peter,

The three log files are attached (the other two log files are attached to my previous messages above since after posting I did not see them attached to this message).  The device I used was Lynx AES16 Play 1 (emulated).  I also tried the seven other choices Lynx AES16 Play n (emulated), where n=2-8.  What device have others seen with the Lynx AES16 card and Win XP?  Thanks for your help.

Ok thanks.
Btw, there's a small link "more attachments" if you want to post more than one attachment.

Now, something goes wrong internally and this is out of my reach. But there's also another problem first : I don't think you are selecting a device that starts with "KS:". So, otherwise you should have typed

KS: Lynx AES16 Play n (emulated)

and worse, I don't think you have any KS: devices listed ... or ?

This assumed, something goes wrong in your PC at finding those devices.
This is a very tough one to help you with. But what I would do is take out all the sound devices you can find, and hope it works "ok" then (see below), and next put them in one by one in order to find which one is cause it (can just as well be the Lynx). And when you found the one, try to upgrade drivers.

How to see if it works ok ?
Look at the X3PB log file. Yours ends like this

Start KS here
a
b
c
d
e
f
g
h

After the h the error is thrown.
If all goes right, *or* an i shows (and more), *or* a message shows "No Kernel Streaming filters found".

Please confirm that you don't see KS: devices in the list !

Good luck,
Peter

Thanks Peter.  I did not see any KS devices listed so I assume I either need to change the Lynx AES16 driver, the version of Windows, or both.  I thought perhaps there may be another reader that has XP and the Lynx AES16 that could say what driver has worked.  I have a Juli@ card on order for another XP computer that I will try first before messing with the Lynx drivers.  And it may still be too early before there is a general consensus on the best version of Windows for XXHE.  Hopefully I will have something more to report before the end of February.

The error was my bad, I coincidentally discovered today, and it happened when actually no KS devices are present. Also, the next version won't allow to choose for Engine#4 while no KS devices are there. Or different : only devices are allowed to be selected, and it implies Engine#3 or Engine#4.

There are a few using an AES16, but I think they all use Windows7 and I didn't see anyone using Engine#4 with it.

Btw, it would seem strange to me if there's no driver available (could be an older one) allowing for Kernel Streaming. I mean, which such a famous card/brand ...

Keep us informed, ok ?

Hi Peter,

I have a similar situation on my Zalman machine running XP sp3 with a Lynx aes16 card. No KS options come up and engine #3 tries to force itself.

Do I need to find KS drivers for the Lynx card? The system runs great using MediaMonkey but of course sounds terrible.

My Lynx feeds AES into a Berkeley Alpha Dac.

Thanks for any help Peter! I am an Amarra user typically but this software looks promising and I should have experimented with it long ago.

Hi Lee,

I'm afraid I don't have the answer since this topic here seems to just have stopped. But maybe if Robin Hood sees it awoken he may me able to tell more ?

But in either case, yes, you will need a driver which will show the KS device(s). But I don't know whether it exists !

sorry

Peter,

But there are many users out there with Lynx aes16 running on XP, aren't there?

Certainly there must be drivers that make the Lynx card work with XXHighEnd in XP.

Robin Hood, have you any results/suggestions to offer?

Much appreciated.

Hi Lee,

I'm afraid the majority of people here when to Vista/W7 a long time ago, because at the time XX only supported Vista and up.
Anbout the Lynx ... I'm afraid that your "reference" to this comes from an instance which chose it for "a" purpose, and you (all) listened to that. This is similar to many people in here using a FireFace, only because I used it at the time, and told it was good. There is not much reason to choose one over the other, although the Lynx will me more flexible with its "double" outputs (if I recall that correct anyway). Also, since quite some years there are many more options and the Lynx would be an expensive one. But hey, when someone you trust tells you it works allright, that saves some money, right ?

I will send Robin Hood an email and ask him to respond.

Hi Lee,

Since I already had XXHE running very well under Vista64, I gave up on trying to run XXHE under XP.  I felt that I was a lone wolf and everyone else, including the developer, was using Vista or Win7.  Now if PeterSt strongly declares that XXHE sounds better under XP than Vista, I might revisit the XP install.

However I am a firm believer that players can sound different under different OS and using different device drivers.  Hence I recommend first choose the player, then the best OS for that player, and then test out the available device drivers starting with either the latest or the one highly recommended.

If you follow my advice you will use cMP/cPlay running under XP and XXHE running under Vista.  Since you also use a Mac computer you should try AyreWave and Audirvana to compare the SQ against Amarra.
