Hi,
Downloaded the 0.9y-5-03 update as only the second user. Made a new directory. Copied everything from 0.9y-5-02 folder to it and and unpacked the two files from 0.9y-5-03 on top.
I was playing Tracy Chapman attended (wav files acourate rip by dbpoweramp) with volume at -12 dB, track 5 ended and BOOM, a loud burst of white noise (or was it purple?) in my earphones.... Tried to replicate this with error logging on (se logfiles) but the next time nothing happened after track 5. I let the album play to the end while I was away (a little shaken) so I do not know it if has occured with logging on. I have not experienced this before (only ticks once in a while - well maybe once before (0.9y-4 I think) but I don't remember it as loud as this one.
Sorry for not being able to explain better and test it further now (due to muscle pain and fatigue). I just wanted to report this as fast as possible for your help.

[EDIT] - It just happened in 0.9y-5-02 too, again after track 5 (had the headphones down this time!)
Playback stopped with time cursor at the end of the line. Right before this happened I tried to lower the volume from -12 to -15 but nothing happened, so I was kind of warned. Did not have the logging on this time either..... sorry.
Now while writing this the error message "Engine 3 did not start within the expected time" pops up (3-4 minutes after) What I have become accustomed to when something happens (an error message) is killing the XXEngine3 proces in the joblist or rebooting Vista.
It is like when something happens this will influence the playing afterwards. Once when I had many error messages (not had that for a while after lowering splitfile to 50-60 - thanks Peter) I also once re-installed XXHE and deleted everything - including the config files under Vista.
Well, well, well. I think I should just go bed now before I get all of you totally confused. Maybe it was 0.y-5-03 that triggered the second burst as I did not re-boot / kill Engine3? I also have the crazy MS Security Essentials still running (sorry) even though I have RealTime file / program survey turned off in order to run XXHE (McAffee trial no problem). Hopefully you can get a little out of this (well, you probably can't but I still hope so) Good night - or good morning.... from what my muscles are telling me I will stay in bed for a while (a lot safer, too, as I won't confuse an entire forum...)

Thanks Roy, but no, I don't think so (as reboots won't matter ... ok as far as I can imagine).
Sorry that this happens Per, but at least it seems reproduceable. I just put her on myself (and swicthed the amps off hehe), and I will see what comes from it.
Btw, the X3PB log file is always on, hence can't be swicthed off.

Hi Per, Ok, I can't mimic this. Tried everything and all, but I guess too many things are different (you will have read this by now : Re: Windows7 ? hmm ... The Missing Seconds). Also, the album I have seems not to be the same, because the track times are different. Two questions : 1. Is it so that you can let it go wrong by starting from off track 5 itself ? 2. If so, can you try it with Unattended as well ? Notice that if you didn't setup AutoHotkey you can do Unattended just as easy when you do NOT tick "Stop Services". There will be no problem at bringing up XXHighEnd then, as long as you dragged the XX Icon to the taskbar shortcuts (right next to the Start Button). In this case, start the album from off Track 5 (I mean, it must (attempt to) play the tracks beyond it as well). *If* you can mimic this with that one track only, you may want to send me this track by FileMail. However, if this seems to be too difficult for you, DON'T ! I'll try to manage otherwise then (how ??? haha). So don't bother too much, ok ? Peter |

boleary - This has been one of the most trickyest bugs I ever met, with the main question "why does this go right with Engine#3". Well, I won't even begin to explain it, but if all is right it is solved. So, please keep this in mind for y5-04. I won't explicitly mention it in the Release Notes (I wouldn't know how to describe this particular situation), but you know it from here.
Btw, if I look through everything correctly, it is created by your ripping program, which doesn't let end the track at a proper boundary (like a half audio sample). Never mind because it doesn't (at least) harm XX anymore, but it may be something to keep in mind.
Per - if you are indeed able to reproduce this by whatever means suits you, for now you may skip the possible tedious "task" I put you to per my earlier post, and try later, with y-5-04, whether it is solved. But remember, first you must be confident that you are able to copy the behaviour.
I can NOT see how I could have solved your situation, but then I can also not see how this could slip through with 5y-03 (with 02 the protection just wasn't there yet). Also, your situation for sure is different. Thus, what I just have been doing most probably will NOT solve it for your situation. But it may.

Sorry for the delay and all the time you spend on this. I might be the only one experiencing this due to crazy task switching on my computer. And btw - long time ago on Computer Audiophile Forum, Chris reported that sometimes this burst of white noise / hiss comes with Microsoft Windows (XP). So it might be far out of your reach / responsibilities anyway. And it was my fault no using the PC's volume control (had it on 100) making it more serious as the burst went right through to my ears! (They are ok now :-)
BUT anyway: I mimicked the situation playing Tracy Chapman track 5 attended (started from this track), fiddling with the volume control, but I did not get any noise at the end of track 5, though. It only stopped playing with the time cursor freezed on the far right. After 2-3 minutes the error "Engine 4 did not start with in the expected time" appeared and the cursor went to the far left position. The Engine process in job list disappeared.
I logged this situation. Will try to mimick more situations later when I have the strength to sit in front of the computer and writing again.
Thank you so much. Please relax. If no-one reports the problem besides me it might be just a Windows / soundcard conflict? The sound by the way is fantastic with XXHE and Audiotrak HD2 Advance DE by the way.

Hi Peter, No, what I did was turning the volume in XXHE up and down - the Windows / soundcard volume was set to 100 all the time. Per PS: I don't know if it is important here, but DAC Setting in XXHE can only be set to 24 bit 44.1 khz as higher samplerates won't work - 16 bit 44.1 khz is ok. (I can only install standard VIA Envy24 drivers for my Audiotrak HD2 Advance DE for some reason - might create a thread for that) |

Hi Per - Yes, I saw that data from your log files. Also, just minutes ago I reasoned that it must have been the XXHE volume, because ...
Slide the time slider to 2:50 of track 5, and click Play. Then, after the track ends a few seconds of silence, and there you have it (edit for 2 seconds or so).
It is not Window bursting (I am doing this without sound anyway), but not really how it is intended.
So, now I can copy it (and thanks for the files !!) it can be solved too.

I forgot : This happens with Attended as well as Unattended, so be careful.
Btw, starting a track near the end has always been a problem, but KS is -so far- more fragile for these kind of things. Maybe this is a good time to solve that at last (the impossibility to start near the end).
