I've noticed with the versions of xx I've played ---.9-x4 and .9-x5a--- that I get discernible clicks and pops: two to three to a song, not loud but annoying. This appears to be an issue with Vista (installed two days ago) as the clicks and pops are worse when I run Windows Media Player! Before, when I ran XP/WMP I could eliminate clicks and pops by disabling the internet. Not so with Vista, they are reduced by disabling the internet and turning off my antivirus but not eliminated. Any wisdom on how to eliminate clicks and pops during music playback?

At this moment I can't say anything else. However, it is still very unusual.
Right now, try each of the Processor Core Appointment Schemes (Settings Area). Pray that helps you.

Prayer, in this case didn't help. Changing to a system core processor scheme crashes XX. Engine 3 stops running...or so says the error message. However, there seem to be fewer and fewer clicks and pops as the hours of exquisite music listening roll on by.  I do believe both me and my $500 Dell may be educable after all. But then again..... |

By now, please put your settings and configuration in your signature. This is very convenient at judging problems (I know you listed it earlier in this thread, but anyway).
On a side note, it is not "allowed" to have the running time at Attended Playback. As far as I can see now, most people receive problems from that. So, Running Time means Unattended Playback only (which was the recommendation anyway).
Then, try to dedicate real time priority to your playback (the one which denotes "higher", and "lowest" to the remainder (the one denoting "lower"). In the Settings Area btw.
Let's hope that helps.
If not, try the DPC Latency Checker. You can search for it in this forum, and Google will bring you to the download of it easily.
This may tell you what is wrong for theories.

Upped my memory from 2 to 4 gigs and my clicks and tiny interrupts seem to have disappeared. Also, it seems that the more I use xx the smoother it seems to run, with fewer and fewer error messages; but, maybe I'm imagining that.

Ah, that is good ! Glad you got rid of them. The remainder would be about experience I think. And of course, that is to be combined with the messages / problems which shouldn't be there in the first place. But from those I learn that they are there, I try to improve things.
Might you have run into typicle "beginners problems" though in the end caused by me, don't hasitate to let them know !

Well doubling the memory helped a great deal, but there were still a few occasional clicks and pops. A week ago I downloaded and ran the DPC Latency Checker. In a few minutes I was able to determine that the wireless card driver was the cause of the few remaining clicks and pops. Now I have to figure out a way to get a hardwire into the living room.......always something!

But ...
If you were using WiFi before (at least that's what I assume) ... that is way too slow in order to load the tracks in time. 100Mbit Ethernet already is critical ...
Note that there are 14 seconds available to do all what is needed. I just finished testing those 1GB AIF 88K2 files and even with SATAII gapless won't be possible. With WiFi that 1GB might take a minute !!
Or you were talking about RDC (RDP) perhaps ...

Not loading the tracks using WiFi. Tracks are played directly from laptop to dac via usb/spdif. If I just disconnect from the internet using the icon in the lower right taskbar I still get clicks. If I go into device manager and disable the wireless card, all clicks and pops disappear. Went to the dell site and there are no newer drivers for the card.

Ok, but this is commonly known. Can happen with an IR keyboard/mouse just the same.
WiFi is outrageously polling and I guess ... too much.
I too use WiFi, but it's not connected to the audio PC.
It depends of course what you want to use it for. My example (besides connecting laptop-likes in general) : my WiFi remote controls XXHighEnd (which obviously runs in the audio PC), but it is connected to another PC in the Ethernet network while the audio PC is connected to Ethernet as well. And so the commands come through ... (via IP).
