Unicode titles do not play in XXHightEnd 0.9-y4

I have tested, that most of unicode named tracks (eg. French) do not play. I receive an error when trying to play such track. Error is cleared when I rename the track so that only latin letters are used for the track name.

Dear Peter,
I have Vista Ultimate SP1 in default setup and use Engine3, and the issue appears when I have a CD that has some non english characters in the track names. I will check exactly this issue if you are unsure about this problem so far. The track names are given automaticly during CD riping proces. Please try such characters like : æ, œ ... When you try to play the tack from the playlist, you will likely receive an error.

The point is, this is all explicitly made for this, and I guess you will believe me that if this really was so "all over", the forum posts about this would also be all over. But they are not. None !
So, I did the suggestion of the 8.3 Dos names, while I actually don't think that can cause it (but maybe).
I really don't know !

Can you give me a complete, full path of an example that doesn't play ? Start with the drive letter or share name.
Also, what is the error message ? (a screen copy of it is preferred)

Please note : I never had the chance to test "data" like from Korean etc. names, which occupy double the bytes in that original language. But there are users around here from Korea, China, Vietnam, Greece, Russia ... and those too I never heard complaining (which doesn't proove it works, because they may know to rename from other software because otherwise it doesn't work).

You mention French, but I guess this is about Polish ?

Hi Peter,
just checked that the error with unicode track happens always in the following situation.

1. You have a CD that contains such tracks, my example is :
Eiji Oue, Casa Guidi, Reference Recordings CD

2. You add the whole CD to the playlist area

3. You play the 6th tracks - it contains some French characters

4. You ship to the next one (Nt button)

5. You receive the screen below:

6. You click OK, then you see another screen:

Is this a problem with DOS8.3 ?

Can you confirm that clicking Next (Nt) is the essential thing here ? (thus, when you don't use that, all is fine ?)

No this is not related to button operations. Simply, particular tracks do not play at all, and this is always, no matter what you do. I copied a few tracks names to a unicode file, which is attached.

For unknown reason the file was not stored connectly.

This is not ';' character.
But if you rename the track:

to
07-Eiji Oue - 07 - Capriccio for clarinet & orchestra ('Rossini in Paris'); Une caresse a ma femme

changing only one letter from 'à' to 'a' it plays well.

So summing things up, the characters: à and ù are the problem.
Try it for yourself in your system. Rename any track on the disk aby adding 'à' and reload it to playlist.

Ok, just did. They all play. I really did ALL I could think of to let it go wrong, but I can't.

Now, where it actually goes wrong at your side is at the FLAC conversion (to WAV). You didn't replace the supplied FLAC.exe with one of another version, did you ?

There is one other option I see (very very far) and that this is an HDCD recording. How that can be related to the naming of the file, beats me, so that probably isn't it either. But, HDCD itself might be something FLAC tripples over ?

Otherwise it must be something special to your system, related to FLAC. I can't tell how, but I guess it can. So, what happens is that the FLAC conversion (done by FLAC.exe) just doesn't produce output. Similar would happen when no (begin/end) quotes are supplied to a long file name, and FLAC just doesn't find the input file. So, it is my estimate that FLAC can't find the input file because of those characters ... in your case only. Keep in mind : you are the only one, or otherwise I would have heard it from others.

Allright, so you must try to get that conversion going. You may try this (if not too difficult for you, I don't know) :

Copy one of these tracks to your HHHighEnd folder. If you use that track 20, you can use the below by copy-paste at your trials.

Open a Dos box (StartButton - Run - cmd).

Take care any existing Test.wac from a previous attempt has been deleted (del Test.wav in the Dos box).

Copy - Paste the below in that Dos box (you might not be able to do that, in which case the outlay goes too far).

FLAC -d -f "20-Harry Bicket - 20 - Serse (Xerxes), opera, HWV 40; Aria. Ombra mai fù" --output-name=Test.wav

Now, press Enter to the above line. I hope an error appears which tells you more. If no error occurs and a Test.wav emerges, just mention that to me and you are done for now.
If no Test.wav emerges, of course the first thing you do is change that ù into u and try again. That will work and now there will be a Test.wav.
Now you have the hang of this a bit, and now it is time to find the reason why YOUR system won't do it with the ù. You may Google for it, it may be a problem of the Polish OS ... I don't know. Also think of the "code page" which may be attached to your system (which actually is from old Dos times I think). Don't search for it, but keep in mind it may be related at Googling.

Notice that FLAC -HELP shows more options which may help you somehow.

If you can't do this all, just say so. Nothing to be ashamed of.
... but I don't know how to work this out otherwise ...
