Last week the processor cooling fan in my laptop started to make loud noises and I brought it in to a repair shop to have the fan replaced. The repair shop said that the laptop was overheating with the malfunctioning fan and suggested (in addition to the fan replacemnet) to place the laptop on a platform with a fan for improved cooling. Following the replacement of the fan, the screen still goes into dark (sleepmode) after about 10 min., but XX is still producing sound with screen in sleep mode, so I do not really mind.

I should not have used the term screen saver, my problem is with the VISTA power saver function. Although I have changed the VISTA power saver function from original 15 min setting (power down screen as well as shutting down computer) to "Never", the screen still goes dark after about 10 min and XX sound disappears. Yesterday I tried with settings at after "45 min" (for both) and screen still went dark after 10 min. and XX sound disappeared.
I have checked in the BIOS of my laptop and I cannot find any BIOS power savong functions to set.
I have disabled the "ATI External Event Utility" process - it does no longer appear under the Task Manager list of Processes or Services.
Yesterday I tried XX playing FLAC files from the laptop harddrive with same results - screen powers down after 10 min. and XX sound disappears. Seems that we can then rule out my thouht of interference with LAN connection when playing FLAC files stored on the central NAS.
So, central issue, how can I get laptop to not power down screen after 10 min. If not just from changing settings in the Power Options in the Contol Panel, which does not seem to work, the timing before laptop activates the Power saving functions may need to be adjusted directly in the Registry - a process that I myself is not entirely familiar and comfortable with.

Peter Thanks for your offer to be of assistance.
One, possibly essential, piece of information that I did not elaborate on before is that I am storing the music on a central NAS and accessing the music files via LAN (both with desktop VISTA 64 and laptop VISTA32). In this respect both desktop and laptop accessing music files the same way.
However, the routing and processing of the sound differs between the desktop and the laptop. The desktop (VISTA64) running sound (KS, engine4) thorugh an internal PCI sound card (M-Audio 192) while laptop sound (KS, engine4) sent via FW to external M-AUdio 610 DAC.
With the laptop, when no sound after screen saver engages, it seems that XX is still playing (unattended, copy to XX drove C:, all services stopped, start with ALT-P) but no sound emerges.
I can see two possible scenarios for interference from the screen saver (but willl have to do some further testing to verify) to stop sound on the laptop (VISTA32).
a. Screen saver mode interfers with LAN access (but if playing Unattended, start with ALT-P; should not all data alreday have been copied to XX disc C: ??)
b. screen saver interfers with FW sound driver and interrupts sound.

Keeping (not shuting down) the Process "ATI External Event Utility" did not help either with laptop (VISTA32) or desktop (VISTA 64). By shutting down the Process "ATI External Event Utility" before starting XX, I was able to keep XX working even after screen goes into sleep mode in my VISTA64 desktop, but laptop (VISTA32) still shuts down XX when screen goes into sleep mode.
I may try to upgrade laptop to WIN7 (SP1) and see if that will fix this problem (as WIN7 seems to provide other benefits as well).

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / VISTA screen saver shuts down 0.9z-4.1

Hi Pater
My laptop (VISTA 32) is now working using 0.9z-4.1 (did not work with 0.9z-4.1).
However I have a problem with the screen saver, which cuts out XX play after 15 min. I have power saving shut off in the VISTA 32 Control panel (Power down = never, Screen saver=never). However, the display nevertheless goes into screen saving mode after 15 min. XX play and XX sound disappears.
The problem remain the same whether I play XX;
a. Attended mode b. Unatteneded (Stop Desktop services) c. Unattended (Stop Desktop/Remaining Services; Do not start palyback at all).
When checking out play in a. and b. I could see an ATI Process/Service in the Control panel. This ATI Service/Process disappeared in the Control Panel after I tried playing as per c. However, the screen still goes into screen save mode and kills XX play after 15 min. Problem the same with desktop running VISTA 64. I know you have said VISTA is buggy in repsect of power management . Do you have a possible remedy for VISTA, or do you suggest upgrade to WIN7 (as only) way to fix this issue?

Glad to hear that you have identified the problem. Thankful if you could elaborate a bit on what the problem is. Is it problem only with 32 bit OS, as my Vista 64 bit machine works.
Best regards

I have done some tracing of Processes and Services on my VISTA32 laptop - screen shots attached.
Both XP(32) SP3 machine, laptop VISTA32 and VISTA 64 desktop (where 09z-04 works) use AVG FREE as antivirus, Windows firewall (no add-on Firewall, execpt what is built-in to the Linksys router) and UAC off. In respect of Audio, the non-working XP32 desktop and VISTA32 laptop are both set up with drivers to be able to connect external M-Audio 610 DAC via FW. The VISTA64 desktop is using internal M-AUdio PCI Delta 192 card for audio in the computer room.
It seems to me that the Windows crash message indicates a conflict with Windows Diagnostics services. In fact, my VISTA64 (Ultimate) desktop has had problems with a Windows Diagnostics servcies conflict for a few months now. The LAN connection to the local home netework and Internet does not establish a connection immediately at boot-up; message to start WIN Diagnostic services manually to fix the LAN connetion, but requires 3-4 tries before Diagnostic services enagages and LAN connection gets established. No similar indications of LAN connectioon problems (conflicts) with XP desktop or VISTA32 laptop - but maybe VISTA64 Ultimate just more thorough in its efforts ro prevent conflicts. Anyway, to eliminate the possible problem from the LAN, instead of using 09z-4 to play music files on my central network HD, I played a FLAC file on the second partition on the HD on my VISTA32 laptop (WIN and XX on primary C: partition).

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / 09z-4 not playing

Upgrading from 09z-3 on my main computer worked OK (dual processors, 6GB RAM, Vista-64), but I have only played in Mixed memory mode so far (tried SFS= 40 and 100).
However, my laptop (single processor, 4GBRAM, Vista-32) and my older desktop (single pocessor, 2GBRAM, XP) both unable to play 09z-04. General settings: Arc prediction, Adaptive, SFS 20, Q1=1, Q2-Q4=0, Scheme=2, Player prio=Low, Player prio= Real time, Clock=Nothing, Memory= mixed, No RAMDISC)
Try to start playing Attended 44.1/16 (native, no upsampling) - player does not seem to find/convert file (same for MP3, Flac and WAV), nothing happens for 5 min., then message Engine4 did not start in time.
Try to start playing Unattended 44.1/16 (native, no upsampling) -player seems to read files (files greyed out), player gets out of view and I immediately get windows error message.
Attached print screen file from laptop (copied to Word) with error message, and log files for attempts using FLAC and WAV with laptop.
SQ with 09z-4 really enjoyable, despite only small computer speakers w. small sub connected to the larger Vista 64 desktop, where 09z-4 is working. I have the laptop connected for listening in my main music system (via M-Audio Profire 610 external DAC) and will make better use of 09z-4 capabilities in that system, if we can get it working.
Best regards

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Wrong order in Playlist Area ?
|
on: September 24, 2010, 03:46:36 pm

Peter
Background: My music collection is a mixture of different sources in FLAC (mostly, some MP3) a. CD rips b. HD tracks downloads (using HD Tracks download program) c. 2L downnloads (using a download manager program)
After rip/ download I use MediaMonkey to adjust file information. Track number info: 1, 2, 3 etc. File name: 01 File name, 02 File name, etc
It is only with 2L downloads I seem to have the track sequence problem, when importing an entire record (subdirectory) into XX. The initial 2L download I mentioned had the track sequence mixed up for the HD and CD files (of same recording), while the MP3 files appeared in correct order in XX. However, for another 2L download it was the opposite - the HD files appeared in the right order in XX, but the MP3 files had a mixed up sequence in XX. Thus, it does not seem to be a HD vs MP3 issue - I am not sure if the actual sequence of how the files are stored on my external HD plays a role (?). It is not a big issue, as creating and saving a playlist with the tracks in the right sequence solves the problem. Test of use of different number systems for the file name (using XX 09.z-2): For the test, track numbers had identifiers as 1,2,3 etc.
a. Using system of "01 Filename", "02 File name", "03 File name", etc. Shows correctly in XX as 01 File name 02 Filename 03 File name -- 09 File name 10 Filename etc.
b. Using system of "1 Filename", "2 File name", "3 File name", etc. Shows in XX as 01-1 File name 02-2 File name 03-3 File name -- 09-9 File name 10 Filename 11 Filename
However, for 2L files showing in the wrong sequence, using a. and b. does not have any impact; tracks show in the same wrong sequence, just with a different initial numeric identifier.
Best regards
Bjorn

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Wrong order in Playlist Area ?
|
on: September 23, 2010, 05:46:04 pm

Peter I always re-name my downloads, inserting track number at start of file name (if necessary) to ensure files being played in right order. Hi-res files in 2L download are FLAC (with need to convert to WAV), I am not sure if MP3 files also converted to WAV before played in XX. In other words, is it possible that the sequencing in the FLAC converter gets mixed up with very large FLAC files? Bjorn

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Wrong order in Playlist Area ?

Re: Number ordering
I have a similar problem with a hi-res (192/24) download of a recording from 2-L. In addition to hi-res files, same files also downloaded in MP3 format; stored on external HD connected via EThernet (home network) Each file name starts with a two digit number (01-30). MP3 files comes up in the play list in the right order. However, the hi rez files comes up in the playlist in a mixed order; 02 before 20, and 03 before30, 04-09 after 30. Same problem occurs when playing either with my main computer (Vista 64, 6GB RAM) or on laptop (Vista 32, 2GB RAM).

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Question about adaptive and Q1
|
on: June 14, 2010, 03:43:50 pm
|
Peter
I know you have outlined the procedure to set Adpative mode max sound quality from setting Q1=0, find lowest possible buffer to operate w/out ticks and then reset Q1=1. I will call this minimize Adaptive buffers for max sound quality, given Q1=1.
Some time ago, I discovered that when changing from Adaptive to Special Q1 changed to a system specific value (in my case Q1=14). Although Special did not play well on my system, I discovered that when returning to play with Adaptive and Q1=14, it played files wihout ticks at buffer sizes that caused ticks with Q1=1. My conclusion is that playing with Special (even if not succesful and plays with ticks and noise) re-sets Q1 to a system specific value, where the stress on the PC (processor, memory) is minimized. I have therefore startef using the following optimization strategy, for a given pre-selected buffer size (I choose 1024, but could be different as per user preference). 1. Set buffers to value to be tested (ex 1024) 2. Play a track in Special mode and let XX set the Q1 to a system specific value (in my case Q1=13). 3. Return to Adaptive mode and try your most demanding setting (in my case to play native 192-24 files or 4x AP upsampling of 48-24 files), with Q1 value as set by Special. 4. If plays OK, try lowering Q1 in stages; if you reach Q1=1, then Peter's target is met, if not yo have still optimized as far as your PC/ DAC combo allows.
