1  Ultimate Audio Playback / Phasure NOS1 DAC / Re: NOS1 to the next level ? on: May 03, 2011, 09:02:41 pm
I must say that the timing for this vacation could have been better somewhat. ...
My first boss never went on holiday, he was afraid that if he did when he returned his job would have disappeared... years later another one of my bosses went on holiday, he was in charge of the biggest department in the company, about 3000 people, when he returned his department had been disbanded and his last task was going on a tour to tell "his people" to find another job...

moral to the story, always holiday as if it was going to be your last one! holiday

Hi Boleary,

Where do you live?  I have a pair of Bert's earlier design speakers that you could have a listen to etc.  They are Oris 200 with AER MD1 driver sat on Onken bass cabinets with Vifa long-throw drivers.  I run them with an 8 watt tube amp and Berts Gainclone for the bass.

Ok so the procedure is to try 0.9Z-5 with RC1 first and if that doesn't work go to SP1, with SP1 roll back all the auto update except SP1, remember to turn HT on and I should be good...  thankyou
5  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 0.9Z-5 on: April 26, 2011, 01:03:40 pm
I have not had much chance to listen to 05 version just yet but I had a lot of problem installing it initially. Since I was being lazy, I did not upgrade the beta version of SP1 when official SP1 became available last month. ...

Chaps,

Just to get this right, I have to upgrade to the official SP1 before I can go to 0.9Z-5 and then switch HT back on?

Wasn't there some issue with the sound of the official SP1 or did that get sorted?

Sorry for not keeping up  blush1

I have DC on my mains supply  Shocked

This is causing by big new amp to buzz   WTF !

So I have just ordered the parts to build a DC blocker based on the Bryston amp schematic  Rules

I'll let you know how I get on ......
10  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / "Scratch that itch" on: April 12, 2011, 10:37:07 am
I'm sure I am not alone in having that condition called the "upgrade itch"  unhappy

I think the current bout of the condition has developed since I received the NOS1.  I am fortunate that each episode of the "itch" comes around about every 3 years (I think some people have the itch more frequently than this?).

I can be happy as long as my overall system sounds "in balance" but when I introduced the NOS1 the balance went so the itch reappeared...

This time I've gone from high efficiency horn speakers to low efficiency electrostatics.  I was able to get a reconditioned pair of ESL63s from Quad and ,thanks to Mani who let me listen to his system, I went for the Sanders ESL amp.

The sounds was "Wow....ish" so as the 63s have been in circulation for close to ever (in hi-fi terms) I have read a lot about getting more out of them and the key area is the input caps.   So last night I bypassed the input resistor and electrolytic input cap and now I have "WOW!" Grin

Balance restored and "upgrade itch" has been satisfied.....................or has it  innocent

(just want to record a big thank you to Mani for spending his morning with me lifting the amp between systems and demoing his Quads, a great help in "treating my itch"  whistle )

I have let paint my Blue dac into Antraciet (Ral 7016)
The DAC transformed into a "mean" machine!   aggressive

and I thought whilst I was doing this I would do something with Mona Lisa's smile  prankster

Not with a NOS1 they don't. The more I listen to the NOS1, the more I think a pair of Quad electrostatics are a great match for it - are coherent, act as a point-source and are ultra, ultra-fast.

Don't tell Bert, but I'm leaning in this direction also, I need to find a pair of ESL57s/63s

But it's an interesting colour for Peter to have chosen, no?

I have found the answer Mani thankyou

Quote
The color of tranquility and peace, blue tends to be the most preferred color universally. Although cool and confident (or wishing to be), blues can be vulnerable. You are trusting and need to be trusted. You are sensitive to the needs of others and form strong attachments, and are deeply hurt if your trust has been betrayed.

Blue people aspire to harmony, serenity, patience, perseverance and peace. You are somewhat social but prefer sticking to your own close circle of friends. You think twice before speaking or acting out. You are generally conservative, even tempered and reliable.

Because of the highly developed sense of responsibility of the blue personality, you must be careful of perfectionist tendencies that may make you unrealistically demanding. Your gentleness, however, will win out.

Perhaps a move to the "AMD side" would be worth a look:

AMD's 12-core "Magny-Cours" Opteron 6174
Opteron 6000-series have 12 physical cores. This means that a dual-processor system will have 24 physical cores not logical Hyper-Threaded cores. All Opteron 6000-series CPUs can work in dual and quad-socket motherboards.

.... feeding a pair of 'small' Quad 2805 speakers ....My usual 'criticism' remains though - totally gorgeous bass, but just not enough of it! I'm not sure how I could improve the rest of the sound...

Quote
Quad 2805
For  Astonishing cohesion; midrange naturalness; detail resolution
Against  Fussy about positioning; lack the dynamic punch of some rivals; slightly lumpy bass

What HiFi sound and vision

Nice system Mani and the white one looks good, but did you consider painting everything BLUE? This would of course ensure total musical coherence. Out of here
15  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: Sending money to Japan on: March 15, 2011, 08:23:53 pm
Nice idea Mani, however, Japan is one of the most wealthy nations in the world so they are not short of cash what they don't now have is infrastructure or a supply network so how can we help with that?
With the uncertainty surrounding the power stations and the timescales involved investors are moving there wealth from the Japanese stocks so perhaps the best "we" can do and perhaps the most efficient is to buy something made in Japan?
