usually cancel only closes the dialog box, then im stuck in winblows limbo
it hasn't always been this way, I probably updated my soundcard driver most recently but I don't normally run in minimized os because I work/study when i listen to music
I'm going to try to uninstall a few things nd see if I can get the problem to go away

My own issues with minimize os:
when in normal (os) mode unattended works perfectly and quickly
when I use the minimize OS button to reboot, unattended gets hung up waiting for services to stop
i've let it sit for over 4 hours and then window never closes, music doesnt start
sometimes alt-x will get me out but other times I can access the task mgr but cannot shutdown the system or reboot without a hard reset

Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: About room pressure, a crazy thing ...

if a pressure change is the culprit you would be able to recreate the increased pressure with some compressed air fed into the room
in combination with an accurate (digital) barometer and the db meter
I definitely prefer to have the sliding glass door open in my listening room open, somehow adds to clarity and bass

Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: Tube rolling without tubes
|

I had a tv that had a picture quality setup wizard that was awesome
instead of showing the color values, it just had the user make a series of choices:
"which picture do you prefer": (using identical images with different values applied, side by side)
a or b
and it used images that for each setting, emphasized the effects
maybe a similar setup "wizard", could be arranged for sound quality. using samples for each setting that emphasized the effect being altered at first,
then allowing the user to run specific music through the wizard a tune/eq on the fly sort of deal
the ability to have track specific setting, and save to user selectable presets
I'm sure once the actual engine is done (like anything is ever done) being developed then the interface is the next thing to dial in
love your work peter

Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: Error : Class not registered

OK SO everything works (under my fresh vista install) now!
i ended up uninstalling the OCX files with the setup program then copying them to the \\windows\SysWOW64
manual regsvr32 successfully registered the OCX files
XXHighEnd then started with no hitches besides my own retardation trying to activate on the dedicated PC but I did figure it out with all of the excellent info here on the forum
now if microsoft's MSDN would let me download Windows 7 as opposed to just saying its going to.

Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Integrated SPDIF vs usb SPDIF converter
|
on: September 16, 2011, 11:59:51 am

the very first time I hooked up my external DAC (VIA USB) the noise was so bad I immediately called the vendor to complain and he suggested trying the other connections, cheater plugs for the power cords (to eliminate ground loop)
the coaxial digital had much less noise (shielding)
and the optical was the quietest of all (Im sure due to the lack EMI with the optical cable)
but by your comments I'm assuming that the ideal connection to an external DAC (barring the NOS1 of course, I'm a few years away from that...) would be a high quality PCI sound-card with SPDIF out then?
I'm just wondering if an external DAC is handling the main load of conversion what sort of card should I be looking for a Cantatis (used for less than $300 hopefully), or just a high end creative labs (quite affordable) to get a better optical out than my Mainboard

Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Integrated SPDIF vs usb SPDIF converter
|

Just thought I'd ask if anyone could list the specific benefits of using a USB to spdif converter vs the integrated SPDIF on my motherboard?
I'm wondering how much it impacts SQ versus say upgrading the DAC as opposed to the SPDIF output (weakest link theory always to be considered) but i figure the USB converter could have superior clocking to the integrated SPDIF...
