1  Ultimate Audio Playback / Cables (Community induced) / Re: The Lush on: July 15, 2017, 08:33:29 pm
Great post Mani, there are always skeptic-pessimists who choose the negative side before trying the real thing. Nevertheless, the most interesting part of the post is the one related to the strange brain of Peter. I always suspected that in that head there was something rare, maybe Lush connections instead of the usual neurons  Happy

Kind regards,
Juan

Peter,

Thanks for your answers to my questions. Can you add me for the Resolator ?

I guess I will use the Intona for my laptop, whenever needed during vacations Happy

Hi Peter,

How will the Resolator be powered then ? The vbus?

I am also trying to understand how the Resolator, in addition to the Phisolator, may improve SQ, while it will be processed 2 times ? Could it be that one processing still leaves something that can be improved if redundant ?

Sorry if my question sounds vague, but... You know.

I tried the Regen when it came out years ago and was surprised that it did something that I thought "good" then, but that was the first generation Regen. When I tried the second version ("Amber"), it sounded too "bassy" and there was a loss in details. I quickly removed it from the chain. If I recall correctly, the difference was an added resistance that seemed to do something with the ground (Sorry again for my lack of precision)...

Regards,

Alain

4  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: What are these ._ files and how to get rid of them ? on: January 27, 2017, 12:04:34 pm
Hi Peter,

I remember this from a long time ago. While I suppose it is possible to know what these files are for, all I recall is that these files where normally invisible under Unix...They come from any OS based on Linux and Unix...

They can contain different information depending on the application using them (folder attributes, indexation info, etc...).

There are tools it seems to remove them but how to not copy them from one OS to the other...

5  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: 2.07 a great christmas surprise on: December 29, 2016, 02:27:40 am
I just had the occasion to install the patch over my XXHE 2.06 (win 10 b. 14393). Wow, it is even clearer and live than the previous version!

These days I am listening to Link Wray, an artist that played guitar with a lot of distortion. There is a lot of vibrations and variations. They are rendered with more depth then I recall with 2.06.

Another level has been reached. Each time I wonder if i is possible to go even further... I probably should stop asking myself each time Wink

Thanks a lot Peter Happy

Peter,

Please don't be so heavy on yourself. You said in another topic that you are obsessed with the best SQ possible and we know that you have achieved it in so many ways. I certainly consider myself very lucky to have all I already have because of your sense of perfection. Like we use to say here, "I won't complain with my mouth full already".

Take it easy on yourself (if you can) Happy

10  Ultimate Audio Playback / Interesting Music / Testmaterial / Re: Tom Robinson Band: Power In The Darkness on: November 29, 2016, 07:21:16 am
Hi Peter,

I did not explain myself well. By "finding it", I meant that I looked for it (TRB = Tom Robinson Band) on Amazon and on Qobuz. I finally chose to get it from Qobuz. In fact I got the two studio albums (Power In The Darkness and TRB2). They are good!

It never occured to me (one of those "hiatus") that I could find that song before with Google... I was so excited this last week-end, I listened to that song at least 25 times (not for each year missed but almost).

When my emotions connect with a song, I can really get crazy about it Happy. And yes, it was a time when I would get on the dance floor and swing like a "spring"!

I always had problems with Progressive Rock and Jazz... I can't sense the melodies. As if I need something "animal" to feel good. I like some of them of course, but I must admit that I dig the most "commercial" tunes.

As for J. Geils Band, I agree with you. There is something familiar and I happen to like that band too (Gettin'' Out, Must Have Got Lost, Detroit Breakdown, etc...)

I just ordered a Cd from Ian Dury and the Blockheads Happy I don't know why I waited so long...

Like Bad Company sing: "Live For The Music"...

Kind regards,

Alain
11  Ultimate Audio Playback / Interesting Music / Testmaterial / Tom Robinson Band: Power In The Darkness on: November 28, 2016, 12:21:33 pm
I do not suggest specific music often, as I consider myself quite "commercial" in my choices. This one will not escape that comment.

The last time I heard that song was about 37 years ago. I was attending a place with good music, girls and beer, not necessarily in that order Wink I was of course going there for the music only Wink

There was that song - an energy song (also protest song). The guitar has something edgy that I love! The riff is very repetitive, but man is it addictive... Anyway it is for me. I could not control myself but step on the dance floor and swing my heart out.

I had never heard about it since then, but wished to get it someday. Well I found it.

(from Star Trek)
- (Kirk) "Scotty, beam the NOS1a to Peter's place - on the double!".
- (Scotty) "But Captain, there are too many radiations to pin point the right location! Should we send it by UPS instead?".
- (Kirk) "You are right. So be it and wait for a new discovery!".

Yes I want a piece of that stuff Wink But my short Clairixa is longer than usual and my "C" USB input is at the rear of the left "H" branch on my NOS1a as you know. Will that be a problem? (I will send the short USB Clairixa with my NOS1a, so you will be able to test with it).

"Kirk out." Wink

13  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: XX volume control - something weird going on on: November 11, 2016, 01:08:03 pm
Hi Mani,

I once communicated with Peter (maybe last year or somewhere in the beginning of this year - can't recall accurately) about the XXHighEnd digital volume. I use a preamp because I find the double output practical to feed 2 active subwoofers.

At the time and before I got my NOS1, I was not using the digital volume, so it was always at 0db. After some time (it took me time to realize this) I felt that sometimes the sound was harsh and it was without a doubt due to the level of compression that many of my CDs had.

So I experienced different levels that would be convenient to overcome this situation. I started using -6db, then -12db. At some point I felt that the music was "leaner" than usual and communicated with Peter by PM to ask if there were recommendations about this. Peter told me about a "sweet spot" that could maybe help. I finally managed for -18db since -21 was a little too low.

From time to time I was coming back to -3 or -6db because I felt that the music was fuller. In all honesty I wondered if I was imagining things. I am still unsure nowadays.

The reason why I hesitated to chime in was because I am not sensitive to many aspects of the settings dials. I try to follow the suggested adjustments but at an early point I fail to hear differences. What is obvious to some of you is beyond my ability.

Do I still hear this "fuller" sound near 0db ? I am not sure. With the NOS1 now a NOS1a, there are differences and for the better. I could do some tests but I feel quite limited even in testing.

So the few tests I did then are beginning to "dilute" as time goes by, but at the time I really felt there were differences. Near 0db some music seemed to have more body, but I never really used a meter to adjust the volume more accurately, so I can't say if my approximate adjustments in gain were ok or not...

Regards,

Alain

Thanks everybody !!
I am putting you all on this new list. I think I will merge priorities with the old list. Thus, those on that one too but higher up, will be higher up in this list as well. I think that is fair.

Best regards,
Peter
Ha ha Wink Please don't schedule me to be in 3 years from now Wink

Well, I did not think that my NOS1a would miss the Netherlands so early after my upgrade to the "a" version, but I will be faster this time!

Count me in please Happy

Alain
