211  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: XXHE 1.186a "crashes" on: February 06, 2014, 08:30:36 pm
Hi Peter,

Alas, this doesn't solve it.

I set to "No XTweaks" and reinstalled XXHE and reactivated. Same messages appear:

"Something wrong at obtaining value 04". Then

"Something wrong at obtaining value 02". Then

"Guid should contain 32 digits with 4 dashes" .. (see picture)

212  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / XXHE 1.186a "crashes" on: February 05, 2014, 10:15:16 pm
In Windows 7 I installed XXHE 1.186a and activated it.

All seemed OK, until I click on Settings (S) or when I try to Minimise. I then get the message "Something wrong at obtaining value 04".

When I press "OK" I get the same message but with value 02. Next I get the message that it only can be corrected by rebooting.

Rebooting brings back XXHE, but don't solve the problem described above.

Can you help me  unhappy

Regards,
Stanley
213  Ultimate Audio Playback / Playback Tweaks and Source related subjects / Re: USB to PC chassis ground ? (noise) - The biggest change ever ! on: January 29, 2014, 12:53:49 am
Ok sound quality changes.

Now with the NOS1 side also disconnected, focus returns, and how! So much so that many 'background' details suddenly become clearly audible. I also hear far more into the sound ('depth' if you will) scape.
Loudspeakers have disappeared. Like Vollenweiders harp playing full power in the room. Another example is the brush that is used on drums on the Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album. You can now clearly hear it rotating over the drum's skin while the other (loud) instruments play their respective parts. There is a lot more nuance to be heard in the playing of the instruments. I almost envisioned them moving wrt the microphone. On that same album the piano has the kind of sound I recognize from the LP, rich playful and drowned in its own reverb.
Depending on the album the music stays between the speakers or moves out of them. In any case there is a natural lightness that I recognize from live performances.

So far I have not heard ill defined or sharp highs. The low end is just there like it fits, but it is not very prominent. Yet I have to start tuning the settings. They were just semi-random that was from my experiments with re-grounding the USB cards brackets.

And there is the matter of the right channel tilt. This is less noticeable in the midrange, but bass heavy instruments are constantly more to the right.

regards, Coen

Tonight I disconnected and isolated the usb grnd wire in the NOS1 and made a plastic bracket for the Silverstone USB-card.

To make a long story short: I now have the best SQ so far and concur with Coen's observations above.

With two exceptions.
First, I use Windows 8 and this sounds great, although I can't compare it with Windows 7.

Second, the sound stage now is symmetrical, whereas before it was shifted to the left somewhat (this was annoying). Because of the symmetry the sound stage is deeper and better focused.

Wow!   very happy

My USB-cable only has D+, D- wires and separate ground wire (no 5V wire). The ground wire can easily be disconnected.

What influence could disconnecting the ground wire have? I haven’t dared to try it (Ok, this also shows my lack of proper knowledge about electronics  blush1)

215  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Silverstone card on: January 20, 2014, 01:52:18 pm
I don’t want to spoil the party, but I feel I have to share my experiences.

After listening to the Silverstone card for over a week now, first with and later without the bracket I rejected the card and prefer the mobo USB 3 connection.

From the start I heard little difference between the mobo USB 3 and the Silverstone card. The Silverstone shows a sound-stage that is a kind of “asymmetrical”.
I don’t know how to describe this otherwise , but the sound-stage appears shifted a bit to the left hand side and therefore to be less focused and less deep.
After prolonged listening this becomes irritating, in the sense that I got a feeling that there’s something wrong with my ears. With the mobo usb 3 connection the sound-stage snaps into place.

I have no clue what the explanation is for my different experience with the Silverstone card. dntknw

Hi Juan,

I installed the card today and will do listening tests in the next days.

My driver is the same as yours.

217  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your thoughts about the Sound Quality / Re: SQ of 1.186, best ever! (Again) on: January 04, 2014, 01:29:34 am
First, thank you Peter for another step to audio heaven. As said by others, a smooth, detailed and live SQ.

I tried some settings for a few hours on two nights and I settled for now on Core Appointment Scheme 3-5 which seems a bit more natural, but I will have to listen again.

However, I do sense (as with 0,9z-9b, but to a lesser extend) an slightly unpleasant sound stage with Q5=1. It seems not precisely focused and a bit shifted to the left hand side.
When I set Q5=5 focus is there, and with it a bit more depth in the sound stage.

I will try some more settings in the coming days.

Best wishes,
Stanley

Oh yes, missed that one  blush1

Setting the DAC to 32/768 solves this.

Thanks Peter!
219  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: In XXHE 1.186: unwanted striped background on: January 01, 2014, 06:49:55 pm
I meant "can't".

But the slider setting solved it.

Thanks Peter!
220  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / XXHE-1.186: Arc Prediction slider limited to 4x on: January 01, 2014, 06:12:13 pm
In XXHE-1.186 the slider of the Arc Prediction setting won't go any further than 4x (so 8x and 16x isn't allowed to set).

221  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / In XXHE 1.186: unwanted striped background on: January 01, 2014, 06:09:14 pm
In XXHE-1.186 when loading an album in the playlist, the background changes and shows coloured stripes (gradient), using the album colours. I can find a way to disable this to my normal unicolour background.

222  Ultimate Audio Playback / Your questions about the PC -> DAC route / Re: Best USB cable between PC and NOS1? A DIY attempt on: December 30, 2013, 02:06:35 pm
I was intrigued by the possible influence an USB-cable might have on SQ. I could hear differences in my system between a stock cable and a better €10 USB 3-cable. For this USB3-cable an USB3 to USB2 converter was necessary to fit to the NOS1. However this converter wasn't an elegant solution and might not be a good thing for SQ.

Inspired by the Mapleshade site and other USB-cable manufacturers (data-only types), I decided to try to make an USB-cable myself, with some stuff I had lying around.
For the D+ and D- I used Cardas tonearm wire, this is very thin AWG 32 copper wire. This was loosely twisted in a open Teflon mesh. No V+ wire was used, only the GND wire. This was finished with gold plated USB-connectors and some heat shrink.

SQ is significantly better than other USB-cables (I never tried expensive cables) and I concur all what Juan described above.  Good quality recordings sound better and poor recordings, I didn’t listen to anymore, become listenable again.

I have no clue what explains this shift in SQ and if and how it relates to the “USB-clock discussion”. Please note that my pc and NOS1 are fed by a Purepower power regenerator.

Anyway, thanks all for the info above.

Regards,
Stanley very happy

Yes that cured the problem. There were 11 of those files. I wonder how they got there.

Anyway, thank you Peter.

225  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Problem with loading files on: December 13, 2013, 06:17:09 pm
As off today, when I try to load an album, I get a message:

ADD TRACK:

=13=Access to the path 'C:XXHighEnd-0.9-z9b\UnicodeTrack0008.WAVh' is denied.

Next XXHE is shut off.

Please help  unsure

Stanley
