Attended. OS minimized.

Interrupt problem remains with AntiImage off.

If I want to upsample, the track won't play without AntiImage on.

Ah, so not at starting, but at stopping eh ?
Hmm ...

Yup.

Edit: Let me add to this already lengthy post. I'm using AntiImage for the first time (if that matters) because the Audio-GD only does 96 and 192.
18  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: SFS Privileges on: September 20, 2011, 02:46:43 am
Just to add to the confusion, I'm running W7 with Sp1 and updates, offline and all that implies--basically only use the pc for audio, but attended, OS NOT minimized, Engine 3 shut off, with 300 SC, no problem.

I'm afraid to try minimize OS and Vanilla-izing the system because it sounds great as is and I don't want to incurr problems so that I can't listen to it.

Did anyone notice that I said it sounds great with SP1? It seems to sound much better (sweeter--in a very good way) then the previous incarnation of XX, with a slightly clearer soundstage and better detail--which usually doesn't go along with something like "sweeter."

The answer was right there. Trackus interruptus--a play on... ok nevermind, not fair.

I interrupted the track; tried to stop a track and start another. Tried it several times, always the same message. Happens right when stopping the track.

Interrupt Mechanism out of order; Notify XXHighEnd development (Restart Playback)

I am reporting as commanded by XX-6. Guess what I did to engender this command. Trackus Interruptus.

Just curious if anyone besides Peter compared 9-6 W7 sp1 to 9-6 Vanilla W7 before redoing their OS. If so, what were the differences (again not including Peter)?

I'm curious because there doesn't seem to have been an investigation or explanation. We've been playing musical chairs with OS's for quite some time here, and I'm wondering if W7 might just be the flavor of the day.

It seems like it would be good if someone investigated this thoroughly--not Peter though. I would volunteer but I'm afraid my system is not resolving enough, plus I don't own a NOS1.

I exclude Peter from all this because I think we need at least one system other than his to show positive results for W7 Vanilla over other W7s.

Of course if someone already has done an in depth comparison, please post a link, as I've missed the post.

22  Ultimate Audio Playback / XXHighEnd Support / Re: 0.9-z6 illegal windows version on: September 14, 2011, 03:12:04 am

When rebooted after checking the minimise OS button, windows promps a message (right under in the screen) that it it is running an illegal version (build 7400).

I've had the illegal Windows message (W7) for a long time, no problems. I always wondered what caused it, now after other people mentioned it here I realize it's got something to do with XX. I even did some updates months ago while the message was running and no problems even then.

No, not that I know of. I always could keep playing The Eye with pleasure. That "New Mix" I didn't play for a long time.

So what makes "Touch" so special that it can sound lousy or great at the touch of XX? That's rhetorical of course, since if you knew, you'd know, if you know what I mean. But still...

Before I forget it :

Take Yello - Touch as an example to try. I think many will have this album.

Everybody in what ever (OS) stage at this moment, should try it now. I mean, before 09z-6. Later listen to it again for comparison. So, this is nothing about better bass or better highs or whatever, but about something being/going completely wrong.

Peter

Will either of these Yello albums do for the test?  1980-1985 "The New Mix in One Go" or "The Eye." Cause that's all I got.

OffTopic

P.S. With only about 30 or 40 people in your country, how come you have so many guys producing cutting edge NOS dacs over there?

Hey, you must have added this later ! (well, I didn't see it before)

Not sure. But we have Philips here,

Yup, you didn't see it. You should know by now that I always slip stuff in. I can't just write about one thing.

And speaking of Philips, the first reel to reel recorder I remember owning (and I loved reel to reels--my last was one of those lovely Swedish or Norwegian jobs; I can't remember the company name for the moment) was a funny looking thing (actually I think it was Norelco--but aren't they and Philips related?) with 5"? reels, sort of on one end.

So I have a soft spot in my heart for Philips/Norelco--but just a tiny one, a little bigger than the one for Sony which was created by a superbly built hi-end Walkman (if that's not a total oxymoron) and has eroded to next to nothing since.

In the mean time I'm using a very convenient capable digital file player...

I love convenient but only if it sounds good....which player are you using in the mean time?

Bert

Hi Bert, I don't want to mention particular players here just because it doesn't seem right (competition and the like) even if Peter doesn't care about it. I'll pm info about it to you.

we are back in square I.
This is a typical problem if there is no refenrece that stayes constant. This also was a reason for me to buy a CD-Tansport. Now I can really compare to something and not just to the latest "best" sounding settings in xx. The danger is realy big to go in a circle that way.

Yup, and information/senses overload with all the settings and configurations. I decided to stop using XX a while back, because I want to be able to hear XX-6 with fresh ears. In the mean time I'm using a very convenient capable digital file player and I'll be interested to hear how different/better? XX-6 sounds, once it becomes available.

Well, I need my 2 a.m. coffee to keep things straight. (Maybe I'll make it wine.)

Peter, maybe after you finish with 0.9z-6 you should take some time off from audio listening (for professional purposes). Not that I want you to, your thoughts are way too interesting (and confusing). But, how can you possibly keep everything straight, and really rely on any particular impression? I would think that your ears and brain need a rest. They may need time to refresh, and they need time to digest all the input and information you've allowed them over the recent months.

It also might be interesting if you just listened to other people's systems for a while (no NOS1's allowed) for some real world perspective to bring back to your lab.

I know it's kind of weird that I'm saying this, and I'm not even sure if I mean it. But I do know that when one gets away, for a while, from things that one is very involved with one often sees things differently and more clearly.

30  Ultimate Audio Playback / Chatter and forum related stuff / Re: tablet or compact keyboard monitor as PC interface? on: September 02, 2011, 09:27:58 am
Tim, Here's something you could look into. A graphics tablet. I know it might seem odd but... I'm, for different reasons in the same boat as you, so I'd been thinking about similar things.

They're inexpensive and come in various sizes at monoprice.com (and it's the only place they're inexpensive). I have one but haven't really tried it out yet. It's probably best if you just check them out at the site as I probably won't be trying mine out with XX before the next version of XX arrives. And when that will be?

But anyway, as I understand it (and I sort of tried it but not with XX), you can click icons on it, that appear on your monitor. So it's much smaller than a keyboard, and should work pretty intuitively once you get the hang of it. It's wired like a mouse, by the way.

And there's another thing that works pretty well, but it involves infrared. It's a remote/mouse combo. The mouse part is what you want to use. It's a little wobbly pad kind of thing for moving the cursor, plus buttons and a few other functions. The pad is circular and has eight contact points at the eight points of the compass. If for instance you hit north, your cursor moves straight up. It takes a little getting used to, but it works fairly well. They're available at Amazon U.S. for 10 bucks or so.
