Title: Happy 2022 to everyone... and my new year's wish Post by: manisandher on December 31, 2021, 12:44:22 pm Happy New Year everyone!
As some of you know, a while ago I switched to a 4-way active setup - 10 amps driving 10 drivers in total (2 subs per channel). Crossovers and delays all performed digitally, feeding an 8-channel DAC. This hobby is full of trade-offs. Although I maintain that XX is the best playback software in existence, my experience is that it can't compensate for the negative effects of passive crossovers. The sound I have now is easily the best I've ever achieved in my room. (A couple of members here have heard it, and I'll let them chime in if they wish - although even they haven't heard the latest iteration.) Right now, I'm wanting for nothing. But at the back of my mind, there's something that's still nagging me. Could my 8-channell DAC be improved upon? There's only one other DAC that I'd consider, were it to exist - an 8- or 10-channel NOS1. I realise that this is probably just a pipe dream of mine. Judging from the lack of posts on this forum these days, I suspect most people here are quite content with their sound. So, there's probably not a lot of incentive for Peter to even look into creating a multi-channel DAC... especially considering that it wouldn't be compatible with XX. BUT... if one were to ever magically materialise, I'd jump on it. Cheers everyone and have a great New Year's Eve, Mani. But as you can imagine, as long as I myself don't even make something for the (2x) 3 channel speakers I have, while all anticipates those amp channels ... The psychological bad luck obviously also is that I worked for what ? more than two years on that 8 channel NOS2, which never materialised except for having every PCB and resistor and really all in-house to start the soldering. But the project appeared too large (impossible to troubleshoot because of too many inter-dependent modules). As you may remember, this was even including 8 power amps, which ended up as gain stage in your NOS1a/G3('s). But I surely can say HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all !! For many years I used an active analog crossover after the DAC with ten channels of amps driving the Linkwitz LX521 4-way speakers. The setup with Orelo is considerably better--especially with dynamics and resolution. The LX521 did image very well. What Mani seems to be suggesting is the active cross-over ahead of the DAC which makes more sense than after. I have not found the passive cross-overs in the Orelos to be a limiting factor on SQ. And the SQ, especially after Lush^3 is quite amazing. Wishing health, happiness, and great music! I am curious though about what crossovers, DAC, amps and speakers Mani is currently using. Have you described your setup anywhere, Mani? I am curious though about what crossovers, DAC, amps and speakers Mani is currently using. Have you described your setup anywhere, Mani? Probably not appropriate to talk about this here. I started a thread over at ASR about it though: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/setting-up-an-active-crossover-using-roon.29882/ Mani. |
