Title: Other settings with EMU1212m?
Post by: Gerard on February 17, 2008, 09:24:48 pm
Peter   :)

If i am correct you once had a Emu.... I do not have any notion of bits and bytes and do not understand the EMU mixer so i was wondering if you know if there are other settings possible with that card... When not i wait peacefully until somewhere a nice DAC passes my path.....

Grtz....

Oh dear ...

I still have it, but never got around getting to know that "stupid" mixer except for using it in the synthesizer environment (ProteusX or whatever). So ... I was *not* able to get any sound from it by CD playback means. I guess it is better to just not install that mixer thing and let one or the other legacy driver to the job. I did try that for an hour myself, but gave up on that too soon maybe. Now I don't even know how to get rid of that mixer.

Sorry !
(but it's a rather OK and affordable 192/24 card ...)

Well for now i have to deal with it... :( And it really does not sound anoying....  :)

With 192/24 you mean that i can set the setting in XX  other than 16/44?

Because when i do that i get error messages like the "rest" posted...

 :)

EDIT: When i do it like this 24/192 and do not check one of the below two boxes ( 24 bits not tested and 32 most often) it works and play's.... Is this the best thing/way to go? And can i  leave it always like this?

And why in your case you are satisfied with 16/44? You are be able to set it to more bits?

Gerard,

When it plays it's always good. It may be confusing, but those settings are unrelated to sound quality for starters. BUT :

... and I am sorry to be so much confusing now ...

When you have a > 16 bits soundcard anyway, and you are satisfied with that, you can squeeze more out of it with the Digital Volume Control. So, only when you set either 24 bits or 32 bits *if it works for your soundcard* you are able to use the Volume Control for the better. "Infinitly better" that is ...
So again :

No !! Not if you are playing 16 bit files.
The fact that you chose 24/192 does nothing but (theoretically) allow you to play 24/192 files (which is not even supported yet).

For now Gerard (and everyone), if you slide the Volume Slider down to, say, -60dB, you will hear distortion with your ear in the speaker. When it works, with the 24 or 32 button ticked you will not hear any distortion up till -114dB (or less -> -120dB is where I don't hear anything anymore).

Peter

I have been playing around a bit..... I never could use the double function.... Until as you see below i set my EMU to 88.2 khz.... (Pic 1 en 2)

1: Is that ok by you? I mean is that right or can i do something else for the better?

2: Does it have to show in XX also? (see pic 3) Because it does not..

I am sorry but this Bytes/Khz/and Bits thing is rather confusing for me.... :( :)

And maybe i have to leave it just to plane 16/44.1..... ( For now )

Grtzzzz

For me it's confusing just the same Gerard.

When you ticked Double and it playes, you should be fine. Also, that info screen (3rd) shows the native file data.
Whether this is better for SQ is up to you. YMMV here. But you can try now ! :)

YMMV?  :dntknw:

And even Upsampling is possible now....   :)

EDIT: YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary

Peter,

Sinds the new driver of my EMU makes that i cannot double anymore i have a question. In the Settings area of XX i can find 44.1/48/96.192

In the settings from my EMU i can find these. But I can also click 88.2 wich i cannot find in XX.

Why is that or is that someting that will be added?

 :)

The settings in XX are about "logical" maximum rates. And since I don't think a DAC will exist that has a maximum of 88.2 (because then it will do 96 as well), 88.2 is not there. Same for 176400.
On that matter I think that any DAC that can do 44.1 will do 48 as well, although I am not sure about that.

352800 is a different one, because this is a kind of official standard, and DACs may be produced to that standard. Theoretically 384000 could exist as a double of 192000, but I don't think it does and will.

Note that the DAC Is settings are used for "self protection", and sometimes to make decisions on how to behave (like playing 352800 on a 192000 DAC will downsample).

When you can only choose 96 with soundcard settings of 88.2 - and play 88.2 - this really does nothing. All behaves as if you chose 88.2.

I hope it is clear a bit ...
