Title: Cover art display in version 2.07
Post by: Shreekant Somany on January 18, 2017, 07:39:27 am
Hi guys,
I have noticed that in the version 2.07 coverart display is a problem. In all previous versions all coverart attached to an album got displayed.
Could anyone suggest a solution.
More explicitly, Earlier when the L button was pressed album coverart was visible and whe an album was played on could see the cover art in the left window.
In the 2.07 version its erratic, some are displayed but most don't. This is for all album folder which have a coverart attached.

Hi Shreekant,

"a problem" doesn't tell anyone anything. Do you have a clear description please ? Don't hesitate to be the most excessive. :)

... I think you changed your post afterwards. One should never do that because now other posts may make no sense any more (like mine :)). Anyway, thanks of course for clarifying.

Can you do this :

Look in your Settings and wrote down 100% literally what you see in the "Data Location" fields. I ask this because ...

Can you briefly boot into 10586 (BASE) and look what happens there regarding this ?
Of course I assume that you did not upgrade XXHighEnd in there (and please don't for now). Let me know the XXHighEnd version in there.

If all there still works, then fill mentioned Data Location Fields exactly the same as you had them in 14393.0.
Still works (or fields were the same to begin with) then it must be something with 2.07. Does not work ? then it must be something at your side.

More combinations are possible (for what you observe prior and after making the Data Location fields equal), so I ask you to look at it with some brains and whether you can draw conclusions yourself.

Additionally, maybe you can look for the filenames and extensions of the Coverart file names, for those which work and those which don't (for example front.jpg, cover.jpeg). I ask this, because I reverted a change regarding the "interpretation" of these which went wrong in an earlier version (2.03 or so). Maybe this now bugs you, although it shounldn't. But something did *thus* change indeed ...

Hi Peter,

I'm having the same issue with 2.07, with no pattern to the albums that stopped showing cover art.(Not that many by the way) They have the same file extension as ones the work fine.

When I booted into 10586 with the same field in data(it was already the same) the cover art shows fine on those albums that were missing it in 2.07 under 14393.

Hi Todd,

It looks like I can use an example;
Can you zip such an album as it is in its main folder (album name) and filemail/wetransfer that to me ? With that, maybe make a screenshot of the complete path where it sits. See exampler from Explorer, after clicking once in the URL area.
Now I can obtain the structure exactly as you have and can analyze the situation.

Thank you !
Peter

Hi Peter,
I checked the data location in 10586 which is still xxh2.06, and compared it with 14393 /2.07 it's the same, however in 10586 cover art is displayed but in 2.07 14393 it's erratic.
I have checked different file names e.g. Folder.jpg, jpeg.jpeg, imageries.jpg but the result is the same.
I wonder if this helps.

Hi Peter,
When 'L' is clicked then all the music root is displayed in the left pane & when one folder is chosen then it asks " Music Root Here & Cover art Here"
On choosing option 1 all music root  is displayed in the middle pane. Some have cover art and some don't even though it is in the folder.
I opened one with the cover art & the tracks were in the middle pane & the cover art was on the left pane.
Then another album i opened and the cover art was on the right pane and not on the left.
I checked the description of the cover art, it was " Kaushiki Folder.jpg" so
I changed the description on other albums but it did no get displayed.
" Kaushiki is the artist"
I hope this tell you some thing.

Dear Shreekant,

I really don't know what you are doing to prove one or the other, but it seems some kind of a detour to me.

1. If you click your mentioned L, all is shown in the middle pane (assumed your Music Root has been set properly in Settings).

That's it.

However ... by now I can start wondering where you actually lack the coverart. There's 3 main places :

1. In the middle pane;
2. In the left pane for a properly activated (!) track (say the one which is playing);
3. As Wallpaper (when set to show in Settings).

You now seem to refer to #3 and in a for me vague / strange way because I don't see the relation with your multi sentence outlay.
One thing I sure know : what shows in the left pane very much depends on what you did in the Playlist Area (thus with the tracks being shown in the middle pane). There is NO logic in what shows in the left pane (that is, I would not be able to explain it to you), apart from what plays should show in the left pane. And then still ... if you start clicking around in the middle plane (playback goin on) I think it still can change.

Do notice that this is not related whatsoever to not showing coverart as such. Other coverart than you expect, yes.

Let me put it like this : what shows for Coverart in the middle pane, should also show in the left pane for the "properly activated" track. This is NOT always the case and of course not intended. But this has been so always. Mind you, what you talk about is that most coverart since 2.07 does not show. I interpret this as "can't be found but is there anyway". However, not found = Black screen with X(X) logo in the middle pane. This again is somewhat different from the left pane not showing anything (also not black with X(X)). Thus, when the left pane shows nothing it means either (or all) :
a. No coverart could be found by the program (can be a bug);
b. You did not properly activate the track concerned (and this can be difficult at times).

One thing should be leading for you foremost : when the middle pane does not show the Coverart from an album, it always shows the black X(X) and it always means the program can not find it (per bug or per really not being there). So if you don't trust the left pane, look in the middle pane (but find the album in there of course).

Lastly one thing : when you click albums in the Embedded Explorer in the left pane (which your story is about) and you click only one album while the tree is expanded (hard to explain) and only one album would be the result of that click, then in the middle pane only the Text under the Album shows and not the Coverart. This is a bug in the internals of Windows which I can not solve (as it seems). But this is like that for 10 years ...

And so the main question : WHERE does it not show since 2.07 ?? (#1, #2 or #3) with differentiation between black with X(X) or just nothing at all.

I think it is a good idea if you read back what you write so you automatically check whether what you write is correct. Example :

Quote
When 'L' is clicked then all the music root is displayed in the left pane & when one folder is chosen then it asks " Music Root Here & Cover art Here"
On choosing option 1 all music root  is displayed in the middle pane.

"clicked" must be "rightclicked" and no matter what you choose, the middle pane remains unchanged. Try it. :)

Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
1. Yes the Music root is set correctly in  the settings. its a bit difficult to clarify so maybe I will take screen sots of each step and send you tomorrow.
2. When there is no cover art display the xx high end logo is displayed on the left pane.
3. However a little while ago I noticed that the description of the cover art is perhaps read by the program if it has the album name or artist name followed by folder.jpg. I'am going to try renaming some album cover art and see. I hope this works. will inform you.

"Shujaat Khan Celebrtating Music LiveFolder.jpg"

Dear Peter,
I have now renamed a few cove art as per the sample above and the display comes  in the left pane like before.
I guess this solves the problem.
The pain is that I will have to rename all the cover art description.
QED,

Of course you are NOT going to do that !

Instead you should give me a hint ...

Quote
"Shujaat Khan Celebrtating Music LiveFolder.jpg"

how that *was*. IOW, what works and what does not work. OK ?

Hi Peter,
I guess the program is reading the encrypted artist/album name attached to the image and displaying it.
the other thing is that 500x500 pixel image size was not displayed. I tried successfully upto 350x350 pixels.
Widows 10 supports the following image formats:
.bmp .dib .ico, .jiff  .jpe .jpeg .jpg .png .tiff .tif .wdp
I wonder if you can make out anything from this.

I really have no idea what you are talking about.

You changed a name of an image into another name, and now it works (you say).
I only ask you : what was the old name which did not work ?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter,
The program reads  folder.jpg . I just realised that it is not important to have the Artist or Album name.
Yes I changed the downloaded image details as it appears in the website and saved it as folder.jpg
I'am quite sure it works as just now I had downloaded an album image and forgot to rename it ,and xxh did not read it. As soon as I renamed it Folder.jpg the image was displayed.

Shreekant,

Are you now saying that if the file name does not contain "folder", it does not show ?

Or maybe more clear for you :

What name does NOT show ? (literal example please !)
-> But test this against the name (after renaming) which DOES show ! So I want one example which does not show under name xyz-etc.jpg but which does show under folder.jpg and I also need ONE example of where it does *not* show (answer could be "middle pane").

I hope you can answer soon, because I like to solve this (soon).

Peter

Just encountered same problem with latest Patricia Barber 24/96 FLAC download
http://www.patriciabarber.com/store/monday-night-live-green-mill-volume-3
I get blank screen with just mouse pointer during unattended play. Renamed cover art to GreenMill3.jpg but got same problem, renamed it to Folder.jpg and it works.

(Not her best album)

So Colin, what you say is that when we name the coverart GreenMill3.jpg and play Unattendely, there's completely nothing visible for image - not even the X cross which normally indicates "no coverart found" ?
Can you confirm this please ?
(I never have een anything like that - just saying)

Thanks,
Peter

Colin,

I think you have an accicental different problem;
If really nothing shows for Wallpaper (so not even a frame or anything) then the program creating the Wallpaper errors out. If it helps for you to rename to Folder.jpg (or any nother more specific name like Front.jpg (there are some more)) then it forces the program to give priority to that. IOW, when this priority is not there, it tries to determine the best image from various other parameters which allows to run through all of the other available images as well. IOW :

If you recognize you indeed do have other images (picture files) for this album, then at least one of them should give troubles (of at this moment unknown kind). Thus would you eliminate those all temporarily (remove from the album folder) and the one with the random .jpg name you prefer remains, then it should work. Watch out : not that we want it to work by this means, but it would identify the problem to some degree.

Anyway, renaming a random .jpg for Cover that I have over here, to Greenmill3.jpg and it just keeps on working. Of course the picture is different but only very far theoretically the cause is the content of your picture file, indicated by the fact that it surely can work when named folder.jpg. However, might you have the idea that it is the content of the file after all, then please post the file so I can try it over here.

Thank you for your help !
Peter

Hi Peter
Your right

The download also created a folder in the music files which also had a jpg file in it. Deleted that folder and it works with any jpg name.

Thanks
Colin

Hi Colin and all,

Whether what you (Colin) found is the same as what's in my line of thinking, not sure but a fair chance :

I think it is fairly easy to obtain those what I call "stupid" ._ files of which I don't know really the origin (but I will open a topic about that). And while these files are about meta data of some kind, they have a very normal extesion like for example .jpg. Thus, you can easily have a ._Folder.jpg and while this can be anything (for name) I can't really deal with it because I look for extensions (like .jpg or .png or whatever, but in the end can be 1000s, also .AIFF files and what not). And it seems the wrong way around to adjust a(ny) program to this, so the obtrusive file can be skipped.
Point and fact is : such a .jpg is not that and if you'd open it yourself, that will fail. Thus, the Windows OS too associates the .jpg with your photo vieuwer or whatever it is - and already has been associated with, but because there is no image inside, the viewing obviously fails, as will the program which creates the Wallpaper. And more. Everything will fail on it.

Why since 2.07 ? well ... this will not be really so; I forgot whether it was 2.06 or maybe 2.04 where regarding this the prevalance changed but because of a mistake of me the prevalence of Folder.jpg changed to Front.jpg. Thus, now think that such a prevalence results in explicitly looking for a file Front.jpg and when found it shows that and does not look further (more coverart files hence images can exist in your Album Folder). Next thing is that when Front.jpg does not exist (and most of the time it does not because remember, I myself did something wrong in 2.06 or 2.04), it examines the other files for size and some more, and the fake (a.o. .jpg files) just won't ope and thus are layed aside).
But now I change back the prevalance for Folder.jpg in 2.07 and this explicitly takes it for granted that that is the one and only Coverart file - does not examine sizes etc. but just uses it ...

Et voilá ... nothing shows.

Why did nobody notice prior to 2.06/2.04 ? Well, because this "mechnism" acts like a virus and it creaps into more and more (say two years ago I didn't run into it myself ever). DropBox stuff, or what/whenever a USB stick is shared between some Apple device and Windows and ... I actually don't know. A NAS (Linux based) is key in this too.

More about this in a new topic, later.

Regards,
Peter
