Title: 2.07 installation and activation
Post by: fralippo on January 03, 2017, 10:29:06 am
I installed XXhe 2.07 on a fresh Win 10 14393.0 and yesterday I wanted to activate it. So I connected Ethernet cable to get internet, XXhe was set to stop W10 updates before.
But it was impossible, there was a message about http services unavailable.

Back a little. At first XXHighEnd.exe launch I immediately got message you can see at the "UAC" attachment picture. A reboot was required and performed.
At next XXHighEnd.exe file run window "first run" at attachment appeared: but no need to run any program then.

Is all this correct/expected?

Everything worked fine, I got sound, but I couldn't connect to the internet for activation.

What I can notice:
- "stop" menu in XXhe: Set back UAC to Normal.
- UAC slider in W10: lowest setting, never notify
- local account, administrator in W10

Please le me know!

No, this is most certainly NOT expected; that first message should not appear at all.
I don't get it ...

I assume you are positive that this first screenshot too is from 2.07 ? (the third screenshot definitely shows that you are using 2.07 there).
or
Maybe you already used XXHighEnd 2.06 on this system (which would force the old procedure) and that I don't anticipate that combination ?

Did you try that "Set back UAC to Normal" option ?

Sorry for these troubles !
Peter

PS: No need to observe the UAC slider; this tells nothing much (or not all anyway).

Hi Peter. Yes, I do confirm I only installed 2.07 version! Win 10 was just installed on a formatted SSD. No older XXhe versions around.

hmm... maybe I could reinstall W10, drivers and 2.07 to check again. USB memory keys with required softwares are ready and full procedure isn't that long.

One "detail": as I had problems with usb/i2s card driver and had to reinstall W10 several times to fix it I probably used W10 14393.0 directly downloaded from MS servers. I will try with the other 14393.0 got from a different link...

Nah, that would be (too) stupid.
The problem I have coincidentally at this moment is that I am not there to check in the program what could be going on (later today I can).

But if you apply that "Set back UAC to Normal" the situation should be back to normal. If you then again get that message of the first screenshot then I must look what's happening with it.

Please do NOT reinstall W10 ! OK ?
Thanks,
Peter

Ok, I will try later with "Set back UAC to normal" and report.

Yes, probably win reinstall would be not required... but "MS" downloaded version, as far as I can remember, allowed for various languages installation while the other one was english only. I remember a N somewhere (could be unrelated though). There might be a difference.

Hmm ... there's already one thing I can envision to be - or workout wrongly : I tested it on a W7 machine, which besides is 32 bits. And since this is Registry stuff which is quite awkward for 64bits vs 32 bits, I can have done something wrong there (works for 32 bits while it is not visible that this does not work for 64 bits).

On a side note, it is also related to MinOS because once in there, the message should occur (so it is correct that the message itself still exists).

But wait ...

This is also related to the Memory setting. And what if this defaults to Straight Contigous ? ... then it *should* occur. OK, I bet you that that is the culprit. And, most probably you will have noticed by now, when you set the UAC back to normal; it then sets the Memory setting to Mixed ...

?

So just in case ... observe the Memory setting. Is it set to Straight Contiguous ?
or
Did you by now receive the message that it is set by the system to Mixed ?

Assumed you have the Pro version, then this contains "all" the languages per standard.
The "N" is for lacking stuff like Windows Media Player (I think the "N" is for official European installs).

:offtopic:

One gag : the "N" can not be activated. I tried once (with a separately bought key), but trying together with MS it appeared impossible. OK, after a long (re)search they came up with a possibility : officially buy the "N" version for 350 euros. :hips:

Yes, memory setting was modified to get "straight continuous"!
Internet connection was tempted under this condition.

Anyway very initial UAC window and reboot is something different.

Will report later.

Ok, I pressed "Set back UAC to Normal" and was notified that memory would be set to "mixed" then got a window with a error... but was able to reboot.
Now it's possible to connect to the internet. While XXhe plays.

In the "stop" menu I can read "Set UAC to optimized XXhe usage".

What do you suggest to do? To activate without doing anything else?

As I'm here... two questions:

- Win 10 stopped updates: is this only true with XXhe running? Or once command is set it anyway works?
- this XXhe PC will be positioned in the audio system and RDC controlled. Now XXHighEnd.exe is run manually, should it be then set for auto loading at start-up?

Two notes:

in Win10 settings/about I can read: Windows 10 Pro N

It was downloaded from MS servers directly to a bootable USB memory key.

Under Activation I see: Windows is activated with a digital licence.

Notice that I did NOT write key code (that I have) during installation. "Simply" servers recognized that this motherboard with Win 10 was already activated in the past.

Regarding the latter : yes, that is possible.

On the W10 Updates : one time is sufficient to shut it off.

Auto-Start XXHighEnd ? you can. But why do it ? (I don't). It will only disturb when you don't want it to start.

was notified that memory would be set to "mixed" then got a window with a error...

And what is/was the error ?

In the "stop" menu I can read "Set UAC to optimized XXhe usage".

You will need that when either
a. you want to use Straight Contiguous Memory;
b. go to MinOS.

And in any event after Activation. :)

So now you can Activate (money will be returned of course).

Regards and thank you for helping !
(and if you can tell me that error message ... yes please)
Peter

PS: So the culprit is (Was for you) that the Memory is set to Straight Contiguous by standard. Not smart ! :swoon:

Sorry Peter, I don't remember the error shown :-(
I'd better to take a picture... but I soon pressed to reboot.

But I'm missing what kind of problem memory set to straight continuous produced!

I only couldn't connect to the internet and it was due to something wrong in the installation procedure on 64bit systems (your words). As said at first XXHighEnd.exe file run I was required to reboot in order to change UAC.

No ... this was the culprit :

1. In the settings, the Memory is set to Straight Contiguous (abusively, by me).
2. When that is so, the UAC is put down and a reboot is required at startup.
3. Once that happens, Edge won't work (IE still does, but that was not really my idea).

Ad 2.
So that is what happened at your very first startup. Not meant to happen of course, but I never thought of #1 which did not matter previously. Now it does.

Peter

I see. So you mean that by default, at initial installation, memory is ALREADY set to "Straight Contiguous"???

I can't remember that... but I'd bet that I changed to SC manually later.

Uhm ... please tell me, did you get that popup to reboot right after the first time you started XXHighEnd, or later ? (see your post with the 3 photos, which suggests that you got it righyt away).
I like you to win the bet but I'd rather win it myself because I just put a small strange addition to the download which I don't like much (so if this is moot I want to remove it again).

Title: Re: 2.07 installation and activation

OK, I just thopught of a way to check what happened for real myself (with that Memory setting) and it is just set to Mixed.
This means that you faked the photo sequence. :)

Am I right ?

This could have happened too :

1. fralippo installs XXHighEnd on a fresh W10.
2. All is fine. He now changes the Memory setting.
3. A message to reboot occurs as shown in the first photo.
4. fralippo thinks :wtf: and re-installs XXHighEnd.
5. At the first startup he sees again this message and makes a photo of it.
6. After that and a reboot the normal install sequence follows (again).

Ad 5.
This happens because at #2 during/after the first attempt of install, the UAC was changed (including a message telling so).

Immediately after FIRST XXHighEnd.exe file start I got popup to reboot in order to change UAC. Immediate restart followed.

The other pictures were taken LATER, after various reboots.

I'm 99% sure that memory was NOT set to SC by default!

You can make that 100%. :) :)

Small problem : Now I still don't know what happened ...

You also did not apply other (OS optimization) software ?
Didn't apply Registry tweaks yourself ?
(not that you are not allowed to ... I am only trying to find the cause of this)

Title: Re: 2.07 installation and activation
Post by: fralippo on January 03, 2017, 04:49:25 pm
I do confirm: no OS optimizations and/or registry tweaks.

I obviously only installed latest drivers from Asus website for motherboard. Chipset, Intel Management Engine, Ethernet, VGA and Xmos board.

I think I can see what happened ... me implying a nice bug ...

After testing this all I changed something like UseUACDown (meaning no Apps possible) into UseUACUp (meaning Apps possible). This, as a state, is checked here and there. But because the meaning of the state went opposite to how it was at first, I had to change tests for it like

If UseUACDown
into
If Not UseUACUp

... and I now see a place where this "Not" is missing ...

:fool:

So issue found !
Again thank you for all your help.
Peter
