Title: Experience with Switch #3 Up on NOS 1a Post by: briefremarks on January 25, 2016, 01:19:29 am Wondering if there are others who have experiences to share with leaving Switch #3 up using the NOS 1a.
I was doing this by default until a couple of days ago. I'm not sure if this is related, but I suddenly had a very loud "bang". Music stopped. I was in unattended mode. Stopped XXHE. Looked at the DAC DC offset which was showing -1, essentially like something was not right. I was certain I had fried something--tweeters, DAC, whatever. But fortunately not, everything seems to be fine after switching the DAC off/on and also rebooting XXHE. BUT I am extremely nervous now about keeping Switch #3 on. I am not 100% certain that what I experienced was related to Switch #3 being on, but I cannot imagine what else could possible create what appears like an unstable DC offset. The issue is that SQ seems better with Switch #3 up, so I am wondering if keeping the switch up is safe. I believe that's the safest way for having switch 3 up.

I have the XXHE as it was configured for the original owner from whom I bought it, along with the NOS 1a. I do not have the original correspondence with Peter on this.

Mind you, that post from my hand only shows how we did it but you will find more good pictures and good ideas in there from others. It is thus about the idea. People always do it themselves, as we don't even sell / deliver the card. Also notice that the "isolation" as such is only about the isolation from the PC chassis at that point. Via other ground paths in the card and in the PC, the (ground) connection is there again, but via another route. For more understanding (of our (all) own understanding), you can of course read that whole topic, if you have a few spare hours. Regards, Peter |
