Title: XP vs. NT
Post by: Flecko on May 31, 2007, 10:35:38 pm
Hi All,
today I had had the pleasure to listen to Peters new player with my big hifi....but what a shock it sounds miserable, not a fault of XX as it turned out. XP is to blame.  I swiched from NT to XP last weak and didn't listened since then.  Swiching to my loved PowerDVD showed, it is posible to sound even worse!!! Even my girlfriend wondered herself why the sound of our TV is so bad (I have two hifi on my PC one for musk and one very simple for TV). She told me that after I spoke to her because of the bad sound. I checked the TV...arghhh sounds like a radio. What a pitty I have taken my WinNT CD to my other place, so I am damned to listen to this ***** this weekend.
Peters player is good no question, it is clearly audible even with my WinNT-XX-Soundcard-Tivoli chain. I can't finally tell how good I think it is  until I am back on my WinNT-XX-PCM1704-IQAmp-ScanspeakRevelatorSpeaker chain.....
Still shocked
Adrian

But Adrian, are you saying that just XP is so bad, and nothing can be done about that ? I mean, if that were so "we" XP users must be completely blind/deaf ?!?

I don't know if something can be done about it. I just know XP sounds realy bad compared to NT. You don't need to be blind or deaf and I don't want to say that the XP guys are deaf. When the ears are used to the sound you can not recognize it. Perhaps it is unique on my system but I don't realy think it is like that.
Greetings Adrian

But ... you *do* imply that XX runs on NT, right ?
You mean the Windows NT4.0 or 3.51 etc. ? (I ask this, because I hardly can believe it)
If so, what Service Packs ?, DirectX version ? (must be 3.0 or so, haha).

 :swoon:

Okay, clear.

Somehow Klaus made the exact same misstake ...  :derisive:

What remains is the perceived huge difference.
I have some W2K systems at work hanging around. I'll drag one over and listen ...

Thanks.
Peter

Tell me if need to be swoomed again :)
Yes the difference is huge...!!! Tomorrow I will go and get my Win"2000"CD (80km to drive).
Try it, if the difference is as big as in my system you have fun tonight :)

Just to comment:
Windows 2000 is known to be much better regarding latencies, resp. audio-processing in general, then XP.
If that's the cause for Adrians problem/finding is a different question.

Cheers

Hi all,
after I have installed 2000 again, it is absolutely clear. 2000 sounds much better than XP, at least at my system.

Has anyone (Peter?) tried 2000 yet? What are you thinking?
To compare 2000 to vista would also be interesting, hence I don't have vista I can't do the test. If somebody has 2000, vista and the time to do it, would be nice
greatings Adrian

Not ...  :(
I've been busy with too many other (XX quality related) things. Sorry !

Never or just not now? You miss something I promise!

Only just now !

When there's something wrong with the "base" quality of XX (which there was), it isn't of much use to compare OSses ... :prankster:
Besides that, I'm in lack of a Firewire card for that PC, so it needs changing things a bit.

In fact I'm quite anxious.

If you like to invest more time anyway, sometime, and you have to isntall w2k new, I don't know if it makes a diffenec in soundqualitiy but I heard you should install the pc as standard pc, if you use it for Musikapplications, to avoid the usage of acpi. I guess you know it already, just to spear you work installing it twice...  :)

It's already installed, but I know what you mean. First that would need a hyperthreading processor, and it's in order to really shut it down.
Well, if that is what you mean ... IMHO not necessary (at all) for sound. For DVD playback, yes, but for sound ... not that I can guess how or why.

Please keep in mind : I follow the theory (well, it's my own :)) that all those things (tweaks) should not be necessary, and with that, now they aren't. Not with XX, until it's proven otherwise.

Hi Peter,
no problem. I am still interested in your results, so if you have time and you like to do the test let me know what you think.
Greetings Adrian
