Title: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on November 26, 2015, 04:31:37 am Hi Peter,
Installed win 10074 & 2.03. Everything seems fine but I can't seem to see the desktop after I quit XXHE. I am not in min OS as yet. The screen is blank. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 26, 2015, 09:16:28 am Hello Arvind,
Since I don't recognize any anomalies regarding this, I can only guess; I know that a first start up can be somewhat problematic. But notice that all is normalised (by the program attempt) by means of pressing stop. So that should bring back the desktop icons (of which there is one only in 10074 anyway - the trash bin) and it should re-activate the Wallpaper. If it is about the Wallpaper only, then I wouldn't worry; I just looked at my own and see now that it doesn't show the Windows wallpaper either. I think I can get it there but I don't care. But is it so that you can't do anything because you only have a black screen and a mouse pointer ? No taskbar or anything ? Start button usually doesn't work, so don't look at that ... Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on November 26, 2015, 01:55:23 pm Hi Peter,
Today I switched shells to Win 7 & after rebooting the desktop comes up blank. No taskbar no start icon. I can't start XXHE or anything else. Obviously I messed up somewhere. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 26, 2015, 02:18:39 pm Arvind,
This is at the bottom of the Release Notes of both (W10 supporting) versions 2.02 and 2.03 : Reminder for Windows 8 users : Don't forget to install the Windows 7 Shell provided with XXHighEnd. See the Windows7_Shell folder in your XX folder and don't forget to read the readme's in there ! Notice that this Windows 7 Shell does not work for Windows 8.1. and Windows 10. Of course the latter does not tell that it will be destructive, but anyway ... you obviously missed that. I can't tell whether you will be able to get this right again. Normally it would be sufficient to switch back to the W8.1/W10 Desktop by means of the Start Button (and switch Shells) but I guess you are locked out of that too. So if you really can't do anything (like going to Control Panel - Programs and features to Uninstall it), then ... you know ... If you made a Restore Point already, you can insert the Install Medium (like the DVD you used) and Revert to that point from there. But I guess you did not so no need to further explain ? (I will if you made that Restore Point !) Peter PS: Tell me, what happens when you press Ctrl-Shift-Esc (all at the same time). Does Taskmanager come up ? If so there's still hope ... Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on November 26, 2015, 02:57:29 pm Hi Peter,
You're correct I did miss out the part of not switching to W7 shell I also haven't created a restore point, which would have automatically happened if I had min the OS. The good part is that ctrl+shift+esc brings up task manager. So what would be the next step? Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 26, 2015, 03:29:26 pm Thinking ...
Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 26, 2015, 03:43:15 pm I am not sure at all whether this is your safest option, because if this does not work all else won't work either. OTOH you and me both could be spending more time on it when the other things I have in mind don't work. So I decided for the not-so-safe option and it it fails, reinstall the OS please ...
In TaskManager : Go to the File Menu in the top left; Choose "New Process"; In there type cmd for a Command Prompt; In the (black) Command prompt type : control appwiz.cpl [enter] If all is right you see the W7Shell program (with a Name I don't know) at the top when you sort this Programs and Features on Date Installed. Rightclick it and choose Uninstall (Remove). I don't know what will happen next, but your screen may now become blacker than black. ;) No worries - just reboot (ctrl-Alt-Del may bring something, or when you still have the command prompt open (or you can create one again) in there type this : shutdown -r -f -t 0 [enter] This will reboot. Or hard press the power button when the reboot above does not work. I am out now for 90 minutes or so, thus I wish you fun. :) Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 26, 2015, 03:45:03 pm If the reboot brings you a black screen again, you can always try to start Taskmanager again, and from there start Explorer.exe (like you started cmd (see previous post)).
That might bring back the desktop and if so, reboot again to see whether it sticks. Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on November 27, 2015, 05:42:05 am Hi Peter,
It worked the desktop is back on. Thanks for your help. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 27, 2015, 06:00:02 am Ah Arvind, good !
Can you tell us what actually worked ? I mean, what was necessary to fix it ? Thanks, Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on November 27, 2015, 08:37:05 am Hi Peter,
I followed the below quoted steps which you sent me. Ctrl+shift+esc brings up Task manager. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on November 27, 2015, 08:56:55 am Good to know !
Thank you Arvind. Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on December 15, 2015, 10:19:06 am Hi Peter,
With XXHE playing in unattended mode if I click Alt+X, normally it should bring up XXHE screen, but in my case the screen, to sign in, comes up. I have to key in/enter my password, then hit Alt+X to bring up XXHE. Is there something I need to do in settings? This problem is observed after I installed W 10074 as my OS. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 15, 2015, 01:19:56 pm Hi Arvind,
This will be about Defender which needs to be shot to the moon (out of the system). Windows 8/10 Tutorials - Shut off Windows Defender (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3222.0). Does this help you ? Regards, Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on December 15, 2015, 01:50:54 pm Hi Peter,
I did that but it doesn't solve the problem. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 15, 2015, 02:23:28 pm Hmm ... Now I start to be afraid that your W7Shell install did more harm.
Is this in MinOS ? if not, can you test it there ? And maybe to be 100% sure : do you see anything about Windows Defender in Services (in TaskManager) ? In there it is named WinDefend. For processes (TaskManager again), look for MsMpEng. Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 15, 2015, 02:28:20 pm Question, meanwhile :
Did you set up a normal account (including password !) ? Or did you set up a Microsoft account (one which requires x capticals, y lower case charcters, a sign and whatever sh*t) ? The first one is what you'd need, without me knowing what the second one all causes (for the worse). Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on December 15, 2015, 03:36:26 pm Hi Peter,
It's a normal account with the password being 1234. Actually I can really do away with the password altogether as its a dedicated audio pc with no Internet connection. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on December 15, 2015, 03:40:12 pm Hi Peter,
Sorry missed your earlier msg, will check it out once I reach home & get back to you. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 15, 2015, 03:42:46 pm Arvind, to be clear : As password is *required*. Your 1234 is fine. Don't tell it to anyone. :) Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: AlainGr on December 15, 2015, 07:51:05 pm Arvind, to be clear : As password is *required*. I am in min OS mode. Task manager - Services shows WinDefend as stopped. In processes there is no MsMpEng. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 16, 2015, 07:57:39 am Hi Arvind - My question was whether the problem also occurs when in MinOS. At least that was my intention ... :)
Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on December 16, 2015, 11:26:25 am Hi Peter,
The problem persists in Min OS as well as in normal OS mode. Best regards, Arvind Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 16, 2015, 12:05:57 pm Hello again Arvind,
Before you keep on struggling and struggling ... I seriously think that your W7Shell install (attempt) is not a good thing. The now "inlog" problem seems too much related to that (this is all Explorer = Shell stuff). Best is now to reinstall 10074 ... :sorry: Best regards, Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: PeterSt on December 18, 2015, 02:30:06 pm All,
The problem was found (yesterday) in the end by Arvind himself : It is caused by the Setting "Monitor Off at Unattended". Maybe no wonder, because I had to eliminated that at rebooting as well (could hang on it). For the next version, the Monitor Off setting can not be done any more for all Builds of Windows 10 (although only for Build 10074 it was proven that the login screen presents itself after the monitor has been shut off). Regards, Peter Title: Re: XXHE 2.03 doesn't show desktop Post by: arvind on December 22, 2015, 09:03:23 am Hi Guys,
After the reinstall of W10074 I don't have the problem of the blank screen or logging in after every playback. Maybe is was a faulty install in the first place or the damage caused by installing W7 shell. In the end a fresh reinstall, as suggested by Peter, solved all these issues. Monitor off at Unattended also works. Best regards, Arvind |
