Title: Avoid Laptop Dual Boot while 2 OSes
Post by: doublelife on November 19, 2015, 11:32:42 am
Peter,

With 2.03, and to run 2 different builds of W10 on a laptop with one HD (say 10074 and 10565), to avoid dual boot on the same HD, can I just use an external SSD or do I need more than that (eg RAM?).

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

If you can make your laptop boot over USB ... Yes;
Just create one SSD (or HDD) with the one OS and another SSD (HDD) with the other OS. Or a dozen.

This is not related to RAM as such anywhere. And, might you feel that this could boot from RAM (like our famous OS-RAM subject and the HDD for that) - no. Or virtually no, because a boot from RAM over USB takes 20 minutes (I'd say at least).

What also will work is boot from an USB flash drive (USB pen). Mind you, normal OS and nothing "from RAM".
But your PC/laptop must be able to boot from USB.
If there's an USB3 connection, try to avoid that because usually that does not work.
Anyway, if you can appoint the USB device concerned in the BIOS as (first) boot device, you're good.

Regards,
Peter
