Title: Losing my sound
Post by: jhmvl on August 19, 2015, 01:58:10 pm
Hi,

I have recently purchased the xxHE PC and it works like expected except for one thing: when I am listening to music then after a few minutes (no fixed time interval but always less than 10 minutes) I loose the sound. The time counter keeps on going and everything seems to work if you look at the screen of the computer but there is no sound. The sound comes back when you move the mouse or type a key on the keyboard or move the volume slider or something like that. A time interval under 10 minutes later the same thing happens and the same solution has to be applied.

I have tried changing the volume settings with the first track I play every time after start-up (a suggested remedy), but this doesn't solve the problem.

I have two questions:
  • Has anybody else encountered this problem? If so, did you solve it and how?
  • Does anybody have any idea what is causing this problem?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hans

Hi Hans,

Call me crazy, but August 11 you already asked about this per email and I already gave you the solution that day :
XXHighEnd's Volume up (and down if you want, or the other way around) after just over 1 minute.
And that one time per boot session (is sufficient).

Do not let it run into the problem, because you won't be able to solve it for that boot session (reboot is required first).

Thus :
boot, play for a first time, after 1 minut change XXHE volume.

And as I told earlier : this is a Windows 8 USB problem.

Regards,
Peter

PS: You can leave on the PC always if you want (read : no need to do the Vol-change trick every day).

Hi Peter,

Thanks!

I will not call you crazy.

You are right that you answered it, and I did try the suggested solution. So far the problem didn't go away. I will try again because I may have done something wrong.

Ok Hans. But keep in mind : do it right the first time, or otherwise that reboot is required (again).

Let me know what happens.

Hi Peter,

I tried this several times and for several days now, but the problem persists I am afraid.

I checked myself doing it exactly as explained above, but I might still be doing something wrong of course (i.e. I use the volume slider after about one minute playing on the first track that I play, reboot when I encounter problem and then use the volume slider again after 1 minute into the first track I play).

Hmm ... small problem perhaps ...

Nobody assumes Attended Playback.
Notice that this only means that the solution hasn't been tested, nor was it seeked for. Possibly it is the reason why you have the problem in the first place (in the early W8 days almost everybody was bugged by it - today only a hand ful (not including me) ...

So try Unattended (activate the button under Play) and then use Alrt-u or Alt-d after the one minute.

Btw, no need to try this several times. One time is sufficient to know whether it works (or not. But always after the reboot.

Let me know ...

Regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,

You are right in your assumption: I used the slider in attended mode. I will try unattended mode as you suggest.

Hi Peter,

I have done the trick with the volume up and down in unattended mode as well. I have made sure to do it directly after a reboot before the problem occurs.

The result is that the problem still persists.

If it is like you say, a W8 USB problem then the solution might be to switch to W10 (although that might not be so easy if I followed the discussions on this forum correctly )

Hi Hans,

Quote
I have made sure to do it directly

I hope that was after more than 1 minute. Otherwise again it does not help.

What DAC do you use ?
Do you know it's buffer settings ?
Just tell me if this question is beyond your knowledge - no problem.

Hi Peter,

Yes, I have waited one minute, no worries  :innocent:.

In terms of the DAC I use I have the following that I know:
  • I use a Burson Conductor.
  • The unit has a CM6631a chip to receive the USB input, see https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxn23njCr8VCaG9mNE01eFItM00/view?usp=drive_web for a link to the driver I use.
  • the DAC chip should be a ESS SABRE32 but I am actually not certain about that.
  • So far I have not been able to find info on buffer size, sorry  :dntknw:
I will look further, but the manual is not very insightful. I can check with the manufacturer if it is needed.

Hi Peter,

I have now opened the DAC to see what is inside. It turns out that the actual DAC is the ES9018S. Factsheet here: http://www.esstech.com/PDF/ES9018S%20PB%20v1.7%20140916.pdf

The buffer size is still not clear to me.

Hans,

Do you have something like a control panel for the driver ?
Where you can maybe configure a few things, like buffer setting(s) ?

Also, you can try to use the front of the PC (or the back if you did that already). Also, try USB2 vs USB3 (the blue ones). Also back vs front.

Peter
