Title: 03 | Selecting Remote Control Software
Post by: PeterSt on May 30, 2015, 01:05:52 pm

Anno May 2015 this is easy : get RDP from Microsoft.
RDP Remote Desktop Protocol (it was called like that many years ago, changed to RDC under way (Remote Desktop Client) and now is named RDP again).

RDP is free and is available for the Windows Operating System itself (meaning, where the client (is our "control") is running), for Mac OSX, for Mac IOS and for Android.

Please notice that not long ago RDP only existed for Windows itself and that "third party" means had to be used. By now you can be used to that because you were forced to, but in our view nothing comes close to RDP itself because of the (maybe coincidental) needs we have for our Remote Control. Do notice though that we combine it with two other tools :

- The XXOSK (XXHighEnd On Screen Keyboard) for the commonly known shortcut commands (Alt-x, Alt-u etc.);
- The Windows OSK for typing/selecting titles.

The latter is brought up automatically when the cursor is put to fields prone to typing (done by XXHighEnd and not by the OS), while there's also the convenient means of explicitly bringing up an OSK for Mac and Android (not available for normal desktop Windows itself - so only the touch screen devices).

All is unrelated to the OS the Audio PC is running ( Windows 7, Windows 8 ).

The very most crucial subject is the scaling and aspect ratio which is a pain in everything else, and which is super with RDP although it requires a few tricks for Windows itself. For that see here : Scaling the Remote Desktop (http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=3134.msg34126#msg34126).

With RDP there's one minor caveat only : it is way difficult to find the means to remove the mouse pointer and use all with normal tapping. But that is how we make it easy for you :

This is RDP from a Windows (8.1) Phone but it all looks exactly the same. Now see that small bar in the top middle. It is that what you need to tap in the middle of it (where the IP address shows) so you will receive the screen below :

... and in the right hand you see a graphic which you can tap to make it "mouse operated" vs. "tap operated" (which is the current setting here and which is what you want).

Btw that bar in the top middle can be moved aside when needed.
