Title: Orelo - KnB
Post by: KnB on July 12, 2014, 09:58:55 am
Hi all,

My all white Orelo mkII arrived some days ago.
Just before that I also had my Nos1 upgraded to Nos1a

So a complete phasure system up and running :)

So far all is working out great!
Too early to describe sound, but first impression was:
Accurate sound - speed. Speakers totally disappeared.
Yesterday I spent more then 12 hours listening, weather outside was fantastic nice and I did not have time for this, but could not help myself. Happy!!

Will post some pictures later.

Decorative wings on top not received yet, some delays with the painter.
White stings in front of the drivers. I think that turned out very well.  :veryhappy:

Dac and computer are moved to basement, just below the speakers. Very nice to have the computer out from the living room :)

Using 5 meter xlr delivered by Juan :) Have not tested any other interconnects. Can be shortened to 4 meter, or maybe 3,5. Will play with that later.

Had to make a hole in the flooring;

What a beautiful composition !

I had to tell from Ciska that she loves your stowed away PC and all. Well, you are not the only one of course, but over here it is different (with the holes in the floor made for it 10 years ago, so ahum ...).

Just in case see below for the alignment;
I can't be sure, but it looks like your top horns may be somewhat more towards the front.

Best regards and congratulations !

Thanks Peter, they were almost in place, 10mm to much forward. but that was not possible to see(?) :)

acg; very happy with the white, due to the size and VERY white it took a few hours to get used to, but now I think they blend in very nicely... not all would agree, but thats not my problem haha

Hi juan and thanks!

Back wall are a little more then 5 meter. length is 8 meter. Its also an half open kitchen arrangement on the right side, and an open staircase to basement. hight 3,6 meter at the highest.

maybe not an optimal room, but I can't change that. Previous experience with the room is that I need some bass output, I think the Orelo will do an excellent job in this room.  :)

Kind Regards

Congratulations, Kjell!

You lucky guy. And daring to be a front runner, buying such expensive loudspeakers from a dealer abroad. Respect!

And I am lucky too, because now I have a chance to hear them in a living room similar to my own. They are even painted white as mine loudspeakers.

The NOS1 upgrade is of course on my schedule, just waiting for the queue to slim down. The Orelo, however, was only a distant dream. Until now...

If I were an audiophile, I would not take a job that's 6 weeks on and 6 weeks off and have speakers and such arrive 2 days before the on job (now tell that we were a bit late with the delivery :swoon:)

I wish you luck with being out for 6 weeks !

Hey Kjell, well done on your design choice(s). The first thing my wife said was that yours look much better than mine. But I think she was referring to the whole look and feel of your room - very, very nice indeed.

I also went for a minimalist approach and originally had the PC and NOS1a in my basement. But right now they're both in my main room, as I test a few things out. I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to return the PC to the basement, but depending on my interconnect findings this week, I may have to keep the NOS1a in the main room. We'll see...

Last night my wife did use the system for the first time. (while I am away on work)
and guess what, she was sitting up for hours just playing different kind of music, but mostly jazz and opera as I understood.

I think you have done a very good choice buying this system she told me; it sounds so very good!!  :soundsgood:
Just wanted to share

Hi Kjell,

Those words of your wife are the perfect complement for an audiophile. Even for those who are not as lucky as you, those words should come in a recording with each new component as an extra for the perfect happiness. Just an idea  :)

I like to add something to this topic which may be not so obvious for Kjell to post himself, so I will do it assuming it is harmless. Envision this :

Your work is off shore and you had to leave for the "on time" just after your new speakers arrived. And NOS1a upgrade. Life s*cks, or maybe work does.
So there you are in the middle of some far sea. What shall we do ?

Well, first let's try the wife to break in the speakers while you are out. Good idea.
Now the wife has to work wirth XXHighEnd which seems quite a target to begin with. But so she does.

Now watch the photo compilation in this topic and envision how that came about. Wife makes pictures, sends to pirate over at sea, pirate puts it on forum.
In similar fashion though, wife hears clicks. Wife does not like clicks so asks pirate what to do. Now some unusual interaction starts to happen with wife making screenshots of settings and send those to pirate. Pirate can not use Teamviewer because of sea restrictions. Up and down go instructions and clicks go away. But wife wants more and also is concerned about reoccurring clicks.
Now pirate lets her set up Teamviewer and a new screenshot is sent to pirate with code and password and pirate forwards this to PeterSt. Whether he can have a peek.
PeterSt can do that, changes a few things while noticing that wife really was in full control already.
All good to go.
Wife never noticed PeterSt's intervention but can report so good sound. This and that and such and so and pirate ? Pirate is at sea.

Of course I never experienced such a thing, but the least I see is a fine co-operation between husband and wife and both being fairly much together anyway no matter at 4000Km or whatever distance.
Wife is nicely breaking in the speaker, but only wants to do that with superb sound. I wonder ... did this create a new audiophile on the path of helping a husband ?
What I envision that when Kjell is back home at least he won't be picking the music. The wife will do that and since she is able to do it anyway ...

A rare situation which I liked to share as beauty of life.
Peter

Thank you Peter for outstanding customer support as always!

And yes, I think we have a new audiophile, it's surely sound like that when she describes the sound.
She told me today:
I always like to have music on in the background, but now sometimes I just have to sit down to enjoy the sound. I am playing Arne Domnèrus and its just like velvet, its just so very pleasing to listen to. Never heard anything so beautiful before...

Looking forward to Friday/Saturday nights were we can enjoy a glass of vine, and she can control the music.

I am so pleased with the sound I have from my phasure stereo system!! just wanted to let you all know 8)

XX PC: From day one I had difficulties with the mobo usb3 - it was not stable and stopped worked after a few days use. Solution was to install a usb3 card witch I have been using since that.
Last week I did some more testing and was able to have the mobo usb3 to work again, and after short time use it was no doubt that this was an BIG improvement from before. Not sure why, or what casing the mobo usb3 errors.. computers...
Bottom line, the usb3 card is in the bin, and will never be used again.. if any future problems with mobo usb, I will purchase a new computer before putting in that card.

Reduced bass output by 0,5 db, new setting are -24.5 db low bass levels are not an issue anymore   ;) :)
Have done some smaller adjustment on speaker placement, still very close to the front wall, witch I have to live with because of the room. I do not think that this is a big compromise.
Next up are the BNC modification, parts will soon arrive -looking forward to see what that can give :) At the moment I am using IC from jungmar witch seems to be working very well.
PC and Dac are still in the basement, and will never be moved back to the listening room - so very nice with only the speakers in the living room. Attached a picture of the system as it is today.

AND the complete phasure system is highly recommended, I am VERY glad I took the risk ordering the speakers - They are perfect for me!  Thanks to both Peter and Bert  :veryhappy:

Received Blaxius and parts for 75B edition of NOS1a

these resistors was very small, alt least for me  :heat:
But manage to install them after some advice from Ciska Thank you! :)

Have done a lot of soldering before, but not on small smd resistors like this... well they are actually big.... ??

No testing of SQ yet, just a quick listen - noticed the bass level, more bass then before.

Some picture of the cables and dac, and the large resistors that was changed out to 75 Ohm.  :grazy:

Kjell Narve - super congratulations man !

Oh, I am still laughing from yesterday's experience - how someone can go beyond himself (is that English ?). Or rise above himself.

I always like anecdotes, and this sure is one never to forget (you won't either Kjell Narve). Say there is some live chat going on between us. It went something like this :

K: Hey, I see UPS is close already !
P: Oh sh*t that is one day early. No, didn't prepare the instructions yet.
(3 minutes later)
K: It's here !!
P: Sh*t.
K: Oh I start with the speakers; take your time.
P: Sh*t.
P: Here are the photos.
K: Speakers done !
(20 seconds later)
K: But these resistors are so small !!! Impossible ! what to dooooo
P: No, these are the large ones. LOL
(yeah, what to do)
P: Call Ciska. She may be able to find out whether you can or can't do it.

At this stage I was so much laughing because of the built up tense in such a short while which with one big blast went up even more - me envisioning someone *suddenly* totally desparate while all seemed set. 5 minutes later I was still laughing outloud and thought to ask Ciska to call Kjell Narve.
But now things really went odd.

Fired up the system to look up his phone number in order to pass it on to Ciska, called Ciska and ...
Was connected with a totally desparate man. Well sort of and I didn't understand what was happening. Then I stared at the screen and realized that I dialed that number instead of Ciska's (I still can't type of laughing at this moment).
So of course that small conversation was confusing to begin with because I didn't know who I was connected to (at first) so it went more like eh and huh and oh and HUH ? but from the other side I perceived the similar but now from someone with hands in the air of not knowing what to do in the first place and taking the phone for a small break.
Meanwhile I had nothing to say of course because for me a 10cm SMD is too small already, so whether it was understood or not, within 30 seconds the conversation had ended by me saying "I can't help you anyway !". And so I envision someone standing there, slowly falling backwards flat on the back.
"PeterSt calls which he never does to tell he can't help ?".

Anyway, and you won't know it, but this is actually my real work; with my ICT comany everything can happen anywhere in the world for panicing and then I am a "oh, no worries" and I make some phone calls and things are arranged for in minutes, actually by conecting the right persons to the right persons. This just has to go very fast (think a whole company being "out of order" plus trucks waiting and piling up) so it is my nature to not talk about the weather or whatever irrelevant and this is how that conversation really took 30 seconds. Yes, strange for talking to someone for the first time while you know him for how many years ? must be 7.

And so after this small conversation I now dialed the right number and 3 minutes later I received some YouTube guides to pass on of which I of course didn't understand the how and what so I called what to do with it and heard that all was already arranged for. Huh, in 3 minutes ? Oh yea, just pass on those YouTubes. Oh.

I am laughing again.

Next email I received 30 minutes or so later was "they're off !" and the further message implied that Kjell Narve was typing this with one hand in order to make a telephone call with the other to his wife to bring along special pliers, needed for soldering in the new ones.
And an hour later it was done.

Yes, I love this. Such a thing always makes my listening sessions in the evening "better sounding". Yesterday too I was sure it never sounded so good, and I started to think that maybe the cables need a break-in of more serious time. But that is something else and maybe it was just my mood.

Sorry for the maybe stupid story but I hope people can envision the background of Kjell Narve's 6-line post which, I am sure, really was depressing for him but with a quick happy end (not the Thai one). And you know what ? I too can thank Ciska.

Peter

Finally I have done some measurements of my room, have planned this a while -lack of time as I have not been much at home.
Also inspired by Mani´s trad about his measurements of his room :) tks mani!

Well here are the first measurement using an umic1 and REW. (at listening position)
I did know about the peak somewhere above 100hz, and here I can see it.... not very nice... Measurement done at dsp bass attenuation at -24,5 db

Low level bass is lifted, peaks and dips reduced :) looking much better now
DSP Bass level is now reduced from -24.5 to -27 db

After many mails and several DSP files we ended up with this:

Thank you very much Peter for an outstanding customer support!!
As always  :good:

Edit:
My room is not optimal, I knew that from before purchasing the Orelo mk2 - DSP was one of the criteria for my new speakers, as I was not happy with the bass response in my room.

Befor and after  - 1/6 smoothing:

Title: Re: Orelo - KnB
Post by: PeterSt on March 18, 2015, 02:44:20 pm
Haha - I actually find it quite funny myself that this can work so relatively easy.
So apart from a few initiating emails and general approach, it required 7 iterations to get there (we ended up at "PS07", right ?).

And Kjell Narve, you used REW on an iPad, do I have this right ? Is it difficult to explain what one needs to obtain exactly ? Looks much more easy to me than some kind of difficult "recorder" ...

Well, it was fun to do it ! and great work from your side too.
Peter

Plug and play using the headphone outlet to the speakers XLR.

The biggest issue for me was feeding the BNC inputs on the speakers. So, how did you manage this?

Edit: I guess it's because you kept your XLRs connected, unlike me... Doh!
