Title: Hyperthread with a i7 ? Post by: AlainGr on November 30, 2013, 04:38:22 pm I have been using all my music in wav format since the beginning. I even convert flac files to wav when a downloaded file is only available in flac. I use Dbpoweramp. I never really questionned if that was a good thing of not, so there is no rational behind this.
I don't know why I suddenly ask about this, but for this specific situation, I wonder if using hyperthreading is necessary ? Of course I can test this for myself (and I will), but I am quite sure I will not be able to perceive a thing audibly (it may be too subtle). Even so, I wonder if that could also reduce the consumption and reduce temperature, implying for better SQ ? Alain Title: Re: Hyperthread with a i7 ? Post by: PeterSt on November 30, 2013, 06:25:25 pm Alain, you caught me there ...
I mean, at the very moment I saw this topic appearing I found a bug in my code. That bug tells that at this moment people with a more than 8 core processor (including the Hyperthreaded ones) possibly can better switch off Hyperthreading because then it would be difficult to have more than 8 cores (but a Xeon exists). But ... Only if you are using Processor Appointment Scheme 1 or 2. Otherwise (3 and 4) it does not matter. Outside of this little issue I would always use Hyperthreading; it should matter for SQ and for sure for the matter on conversions (net speed). Regards, Peter Title: Re: Hyperthread with a i7 ? Post by: AlainGr on November 30, 2013, 06:48:35 pm Peter, since I always understood that by "convert", you meant from "something" format -> wav, I never was sure it was useful to have 12 cores... But of course, if it does not affect anything (SQ, consumption, temperature or else), I am fine with using it (HT)...
Regards, Alain -17C this morning... Brrrrr ;) Title: Re: Hyperthread with a i7 ? Post by: PeterSt on November 30, 2013, 06:59:30 pm All correct Alain. It's only that SQ will be for the better with more cores (because of explicitly addressing some things in that area, so not that "I think so"). But don't forget about the bug I just found about more than 8 cores (recent topic elsewhere).
And of course that temperature is way too low to leave your beer outside. Here it is a nice 6C. :grazy: Peter Title: Re: Hyperthread with a i7 ? Post by: acg on November 30, 2013, 10:31:41 pm -17C this morning... Brrrrr ;) Interesting off-topic story here...sorry. :offtopic: One of my very good mates lived in Canada for a few years and ended up on an exploration crew in the oilfields north of Edmonton. When he left up there he had some -30 degree temps. When he got back to Australia he went straight out to the Moomba Gas Fields in the middle of the desert and experienced +50 degrees. Quite a culture shock at both of these places especially when the 80 degree swing was experienced in the same week!! Anyway, back to normal programming. Anthony Title: Re: Hyperthread with a i7 ? Post by: AlainGr on December 01, 2013, 02:24:24 am Hi Anthony,
I am trying to imagine the shock I would experience passing from one extreme to the other... The older I get, the lesser these extremes need to be to make me uncomfortable... And Peter, well at -17... Hot chocolate instead ? ;) Alain |
