There have been some strange things happening to my system for a while. Settings in XX have been having a really big impact on sound quality. Clock Res particularly changed the quality of the sound in a big way at low settings. I could never remember XX settings making such a big difference - suspiciously big. At 0.5 Clock Res the sound was really odd with very strange effects to the sound stage.

Also, and particularly with classical music, there have been little clicks and pops in the music. Add to that a hard edge to the sound and a flat "in your face" sound stage. It sounded suspiciously as if my PC was being stretched to the limit performance wise. Last night one of the things I tried was in BIOS returning the clock speed back to full speed (I had set it to 14 from 24 max). Wow what a difference the sound quality is really excellent again. In particular strings sound great and the image is no longer flat it has recessed and sounds much much better. In fact I cannot ever remember string tone sounding this good on this system.

Maybe I had under clocked too much I shall play with settings further to see what happens. Perhaps the reduced clock speed was an unfortunate choice of speed clashing with another/other clocks (VDU?).

If you'd ask me, I would say that you can't just mangle with clock speeds and clock resolution and more (stepping stuff) unlimited and regardless Mobo and processor.

Personally I don't recognize at all what you are saying, but my MoBo is a different one.

In the far end I am thinking about how OS clock resolution can - or actually should be related on the "clock edges" of the hardware. So, something like 1400MHz should fit 50000 Hz (that Clockres of 0.5ms). At least that is what I would investigate with strange effects. And then not fit it exactly, but de-fit it (the more close fit but not 100% the more resonance occurring).

Uh-oh ... now what will happen to you all ?

Well some very strange things happened at reduced clock speed. I made the classic mistake of quickly making the change (and others) thought it was OK and then made more changes - but as I was focusing on changes to speakers at the time I lost track - too much going on. Now I will go back to making one change give it lots of time then decide. With changes to amps, speakers and PC all in the pipeline it could be months before the final config is sorted.

No complaints now though!!!! maybe I will just listen to music!

Hi Paul,

I agree with you on this subject. I too noticed that reducing the speed of the cpu brought in harshness & made the music dull. I have gone back to the default speed & the SQ is by far better.

I guess this depends largely on the PC configuration/components.
