Title: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: AlainGr on June 23, 2013, 09:53:15 pm After it was mentioned that sometimes Imdisk (ramdrive) does not disappear after a shutdown, I looked around and found this article at this link:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/olivnie/archive/2012/12/14/windows-8-fast-boot.aspx I have not checked yet where this is available, if it is by default, or if we have to trigger it ourself. I can't tell either if this could explain about Imdisk... Alain Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: juanpmar on June 24, 2013, 12:06:42 am I wonder if you (I´m talking to you all) shutdown your Music Pc every night. Some time ago I kept it running all the time, mostly to get the NOS1 warm but now I shut it down at the end of the day. I think that Peter said something about it today and if I understood it well, he keeps the pc running all the time. Is there any real advantage to keep it ON continuously?. We all know that in general it is recommended to have the system ON all the time (except valves of course).
Juan Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: AlainGr on June 24, 2013, 03:22:44 am Hi Juan,
I also heard about this. "leave all on" thing. I don't really have a reason not to leave it on all the time, but I don't have a reason for the contrary neither. So I shut it off at night or when I leave for many hours (or on vacation). But that's just me. Is it really a matter of SQ ? I know that some components require between a few minutes to a few hours to stabilize, but is it the case with a PC ? Or is it a matter of practicality ? Alain Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: PeterSt on June 25, 2013, 01:51:13 pm I am sure this hibernate shutdown/state is the default for Windows 8 (that article also states that I think).
Shutdown happens within 2 seconds or so, and startup after that between 5 and 10 (BIOS POST not counted). Still there is a difference between shut off + power on and reboot; When you installed the legacy boot menu (for dual boot etc.) - that looking the same as the Windows 7 one (not graphical) you can see that when the PC is powered on this graphical menu appears. However, when you just reboot, this legacy menu appears. What I never thought of until your topic here Alain, is that a reboot and even shutdown won't help much (or not all) for really "resetting" everything. What also could be interesting is that the way XXHighEnd reboots to/from Minimized OS should be the cold boot method (by accident). Just watch how much longer it takes (which is not XXHighEnd's processing anywhere as soon as you see the "Restarting"). Hmm ... Peter Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: PeterSt on June 25, 2013, 01:56:14 pm The reason for me to not shut down the audio PC is that switching all the lights off already is a job (ok, of 15 seconds), let alone switching off all the PC's. So, switch off the audio PC means shut them off all. And so I leave all on.
No "idiocy" here that thinks PCs should stay warm. Maybe they should, but then it's new to me and I don't even want to know. Peter Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: AlainGr on June 25, 2013, 02:29:25 pm I don't know where I took that, but I always shut the hibernation mode off...
Alain Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: PeterSt on June 25, 2013, 02:47:35 pm Probably from me. I do as well, but somehow never thought of it for the W8 PC ...
Title: Re: Windows 8 Hybrid shutdown Post by: AlainGr on June 25, 2013, 03:27:52 pm Probably :) Ok then - Surely ;)
