Title: 09-z9: Volume 30 db lower with 24 bit only
Post by: listening on May 30, 2013, 06:35:01 pm
Hi Peter,

when using 24 bit only mode (waveIO card) it is necessary to increase the digital volume 30 dB. Peak extension is off. Is that intended?

Georg

Uhm Georg, I don't think so !
Could be a nice "wife's" feature though.

I suppose this worked OK pre 0.9z-9 ?

Yes, it worked. Maybe it's a problem of the Thesycon driver - I will check.

Well, I don't know. I just came back here to say :

One small-ish problem : here it works.
I tried all possible input-output combinations up to 192KHz input and 384KHz output and all looks fine.
For Kernel Streaming that is. With WASAPI nothing seems to work at all (error messages). But that could/should be the NOS1 ... (?) I must check that, because I never tried the Needs 24 bits really for WASAPI, I think.

When I first tried 0.9z-9 before activating, the output was very low (maybe 30dB lower than normal), even when the volume control was set to a regular listening value. As soon as I activated, the output increased to normal, without my touching the volume control at all. And all has remained well since.

HTH.

Mani.

Now *that* will be the day !

I guess I have to believe you, but it is difficult. :)

Thank you Mani.

So Georg, are you Activated by chance ?

And Mani, I suppose this is unrelated to the Needs 24 bit setting ?

Well, it never happened to me before. I was shocked that I was getting such little output at a regular volume control setting and was going to post something about it. But after the activation, everything was OK, so I didn't bother.

And Mani, I suppose this is unrelated to the Needs 24 bit setting ?

Yep, totally unrelated.

Mani.

Well, you won't believe it, but just minutes ago I was trying something on a laptop. Just a testsignal - see whether it worked for a certain setting. Of course I started with putting 0.9z-9 on it first.

Gently pulled the volume wheel, ... and what do you think what happened ?

:swoon:

What ? no quick answers ? OK, hint : it was not Activated.
:)

Still no answers ?
All right. Another hint : I did not think about this topic/issue at all. :fool:

Some on now ...

It really doesn't matter what and how many hints I give eh ?
Ok ok ok, the sound was real low. Not that I really could tell from the 1x1cm speakers in there, not even stopping the normal music playback going on at the time (it now is again), but anyway.

So ...

... So I will honestly admit that I forgot to higher the volume which by default is set at -43.5dBFS.

So, not suggesting anything. Really not. Just having a bit of fun because this really happened. And indeed I dit *not* even think about this topic.

So I must be ignorant at least !

Peter

PS: But this sure was a non-Activated version. So :scratching:.

Hi Peter,

I believe that xxhighend is activated - but I will take a look again. I found another abnormal interaction with the Thesycon driver. There is a small tool to interactively parameterise the driver. It's possible to change the volume - and it was changed. Seems that there is sometimes unexpected interaction ...

Georg, sorry for all the fooling around by me. And for Mani too : just kidding.

But do you mean that something can change those (volume ?) parameters, or that XXHighEnd might be doing that ?
Anyway I would not know how that should happen.

Windows volume - Yes !
So maybe concentrate on that ?

Best regards,
Peter

Crazy thought :

When this is W8 in both cases, I think this can happen. W8 plays VERY strange tricks with the Volume. And might you not know it : yes, it can change it, which makes it not much "bit perfect".

Is it W8 in your situation(s) ?

Peter

I'm using W7 only at the moment. I believe that xxhighend is ativated - I can activate xtweaks and boot to minimize OS. But there is a glitch: The first time there is a system message that it's not possible to boot to minimize OS. After rebooting without going to minimize OS it's possible to to so.
I can still change the output volume with the Thesycon tool. Seems that they are using a digital volume algorithm too.

If the reboot into Minimized fails, just try it again. DO NOT REBOOT YOURSELF because things won't work then.
There will be an update for this most probably later today.

Yes, I am sure the Thesycon driver contains volume manipulation. The least you can do is set either the Windows Volume and the Driver's volume at full (-0dBFS) and see whether you can indeed get them to -0dBFS (notice that they will influence eachother). When it is not possible to have them equal, something is wrong and you will never have a bit-perfect base.

Also notice that in the device's properties (start from the speaker icon in the taskbar tray) there's multi-channel sh*t and this too can have set the volume at other than -0dBFS. There's much more in there which can be wrong. You will see ...
In the end you should disable all the "WDM" stuff (hence what is visible through that speaker icon in the taskbar tray), assumed you are using Kernel Streaming. And then *still* you won't be sure that all is out of the way.

Peter

I had to reinstall the waveio drivers after upgrading the xxhighend version and everything is working fine yet.
