Title: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: charliemb on March 03, 2013, 11:08:06 pm Hi Peter
I see that your sig now includes this comment: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** I don't see a thread for this topic. Can you point me to it or can you tell us a little more about it? Can a powerful PC as the one you or juanpmar have put together actually run off of linear supplies for +12, +5, +3.3, +1.7, -5, -12 volts, etc. That's one heck of a power supply. Big heat sinks I imagine. Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: PeterSt on March 04, 2013, 09:12:07 am Charlie,
I was asked before whether I indeed now have a linear supply for my PC. But this is not the case. Btw, I have thought about creating one myself but it would indeed be a big pile of more supplies for all the voltages. So, never mind (for me). What you see in my sig sprung from here : Re: My first Windows 8 experience - from Mr NOISE ? Anyone tried it?

did not found anything about that card - but found an article about some similar approach: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDArticles&op=Story4&ndar_id=8 Georg Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: phantomax on March 04, 2013, 06:51:59 pm Mmmmm... intriguing.
Thank you Georg! Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: AlainGr on March 04, 2013, 07:29:54 pm Can this help in this regard? Anyone tried it? Hi Maxi, http://www.ebay.es/itm/ApeXi-Power-Filter-Card-for-Computer-Audio-Enhancement-For-PCI-and-PCI-E-Slots-/251232340488?pt=AU_Components&hash=item3a7e9d4a08 Maxi I was also intrigued by that card and I got this link where it is briefly discussed: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pc-based/221800-any-diy-pc-power-noise-filters-5.html From what I understood, it seems that some do not agree on the fact that a card located somewhere in the pc cannot heal all the noise... And that the problem should be corrected right at the source... Alain Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: phantomax on March 05, 2013, 12:11:53 am Hi, Alain
I am skeptical too but I was wondering if there is some truth in it because my soundcard has a special circuit with capacitors near the DAC chip called by the manufacturer "PC noise killer". Maxi Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: AlainGr on March 05, 2013, 12:59:49 am At some point (but I am speaking to myself - happens too often these days), I wonder if all I am aiming in the right direction... I know that some people will mention that cables do make a difference (and they do in many circumstances), but the next question "Is it because something is wrong somewhere else ?" raises. If a cable does something good to a system, but nothing to another, it could be because that other is immune to a problem the cable corrects, or that part of the system has no problem to hide or "adjust"...
I know that a PC is far from being a hi-fi component and I am willing to try many things to make it silent electronically speaking, but I also need to know if by applying something, I am improving the results or deteriorating something else... So actually I have a 2.5 SSD drive in an external enclosure, connected to my music pc through esata 6gbit (the enclosure is 6gbit, so is the cable and the pc esata connection). That drive carries the OS and XXHE - and is powered from a iFi audio iUSB power supply. The USB connection between the pc and the NOS1 takes its output from a Sotm USB 3 PCIex card. My next move will be to power my external music hard drive with a linear power supply. I also intend to get a balanced power, eventually have a separate small electrical panel with a separated ground from the rest of the house... Wow... I never imagined I would do that much some day ! To be crazy or not, that is the question :) Alain Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: phantomax on March 05, 2013, 01:12:18 am To bit or not to bit, I would say. ( sorry for the poor joke ) :)
I think we all are a little bit crazy here. Maxi Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: AlainGr on March 05, 2013, 01:26:16 am May I add to the play of words: "Another One BYTES the dust..." ;)
But as long as it is fun, I will be ok. The day I will take this all too seriously, I will have a good talk with myself :) I should write my own recipe for playback pleasure :) Alain Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: AlainGr on March 05, 2013, 01:46:49 am Can this help in this regard? Anyone tried it? But the price of this card makes it quite interesting... Maybe if it does something positive... ? http://www.ebay.es/itm/ApeXi-Power-Filter-Card-for-Computer-Audio-Enhancement-For-PCI-and-PCI-E-Slots-/251232340488?pt=AU_Components&hash=item3a7e9d4a08 Maxi Do you intend to give it a try ? Alain Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: phantomax on March 05, 2013, 01:51:31 am Yes, I think so. There is not much to lose.
Maxi Title: Re: **Removed Switching Supplies from everywhere** Post by: AlainGr on March 05, 2013, 03:02:06 am I will be very interested in reading the results when you will have the chance to play with it :)
