Title: Can't get out of Minimized OS
Post by: BertD on February 19, 2013, 09:35:01 am
Bert, man, it actually has been a long time that you couldn't get something done while others had problems (not sure whether I have my symantics right). Please feel free to email me in more detail what happened now, because at this moment I can't get it.

Nothing happened. I started the new version and just after that I remembered the minimised situation. I tried to recover by starting the previous version but the damage was already done, no way back.

Before I always put the OS in normal state if I wanted to update something beforehand and then nothing is going wrong.

I will install W7 again somewhere today (another hour lost in the proces, also because I do not have a CDROM in my PC and have to do things virtually from within W8).

Its time for a hardware solution like the Logitech Duet capable to be connected to a server too without the need for a PC.

Uhm ... I just don't recognize anything about not being able to "install" XXHighEnd (which is nothing more than unzipping a file) to a new folder on a system where XXHighEnd already was installed before.

If it were for me this has always been possible.
So what's up here ?

The installation is not a problem on its own.

Its the present situation of XX where I am not able to activate nor able to bring the OS back in normal state just because XX is not activated...

And if XX is not activated then other functions do not work either as it is in DEMO mode...

1. The Release Notes seem to tell that you can go from Minimized to Normal without being Activated.
2. Why would we not be able to Activate in Minimized state ?

And thus still ... I lack some information, or you did not try.
The latter not assumed ...

??

I am apparently the only one who can't and see a popup telling me that it is not possible in DEMO mode.

2. Why would we not be able to Activate in Minimized state ?

My old activation number does not seem to work anymore and getting a new one is impossible becuase there is NO network connection (minimized mode remember?).

I did try one last thing (just remembered) and that seems to work finally.

I still had a very old activated XX folder (3 versions before!) and copied the XXHighend1xx.dat file from there to the newly "installed" folder.

Bert - I once had a similar problem in that I got "stuck" in minimised after forgetting to maximise before installing. I went through all the services and manually set them to "manual" (and it is a pain to do) then rebooted and it came back up OK. Not sure if it is any help to you but I mention it anyway.

Cheers

Paul

I will move this part of the topic to a dedicated one ...
(and will type a new response)

Maybe not (or most probably sure not);
But it would be a mistake from me somewhere. And since accidents never come alone (is this English ?) :

My old activation number does not seem to work anymore

Why would that be ? I'd say if that worked before it keeps on working. Remember, you didn't reinstall the OS or anything.
but
Wasn't it you who is sharing data between the two OSes ? So now I am not sure what happens with that. But to me it seems that it can't work. And yes, I know it all has been setup to enable this sharing but I may have overlooked this issue. Ehm ... :

I still had a very old activated XX folder (3 versions before!) and copied the XXHighend1xx.dat file from there to the newly "installed" folder.

But I think this tells it all (to me). I must be a bit cautious, but :
a. If this helped then to me it seems you just used the wrong Activation Code for this new "install";
b. If this helped I think I now know where the impossibility to go to Normal OS comes from;
c. I think you can't be poperly Activated at this moment.

It doesn't matter much how things really went, but I do like to apologize for it.
Look into #c though. And if it appears to be all OK then I say it is impossible and something else happened or is still happening.

Also, better stop that sharing of data between OSes. I think it can mess up and I am not able to oversee what can actually happen because I never thought about this. It is all a bit complex, but just think about two *different* XXHighEnd versions, the one obviously being newer than the other while the newer stores new (field) data which the other (when started later) will throw out. Or just inconsistencies in general.
 :smirk: :smirk:

Okay Bert, at least now you know why I wanted to know what happened or how things went.
... to prevent it happening a next time ...

Thanks,
Peter

No, I am not mixing things. Each OS has its own directory and its own XXData folder.

I know why you ask but nevertheless nothing further will come out of my problems with this now though because one other problem occured while being in (a) normal state (to try...). All worked fine finally until I hit the button to go minimized and agreed to reboot.

XX never worked again or even showed up. It crashes with short bliep (popup) on the screen without leaving me a hint...

What happened this time?

While rebooting from normal to minimized OS I noticed that Windows started to install 38 new updates without asking beforehand. Nice, but that should ONLY happen when I shut down the PC (if I want to update) and NOT while rebooting windows.

I am installing a new W7 version at this very moment and I will generate a new activation code through PayPal.

Of course you answered Yes to the question about making a Restore Point.

Why ?

For 100% sure this will have incurred for (the) problems. But I don't need to tell you that.

Hmm ... Is this a special setting somewhere ?
Seems odd to me in the mean time. No updates will work with any shutdown only. Or at least updates for 100% sure exist which need another boot. Thus, whether this setting exists or not, I can't imagine that it can work like you wanted.
Is this important ? yes I think so. Because as obvious as can be (to me) this can not combine and thus is dangerous.

Still there would be this Restore Point ... :scratching:

Yes, there was but useless if minimized does NOT support for this (not even using F8 during booting).

Bert

But hey, things are working here okay now with my fresh W7 installation and Windows updates will not bother me anymore and no scary windows sounds either because I killed that before it could make noise and so forth... I should write my own installation guide to prevent that I forget something and need again at least one hour of frustration to get things working properly again.

Updates? Blehhh...

BTW. On my normal PC windows NEVER updates when I reboot, even if there are some waiting. Only when I shutdown the PC then it will start updating or of course when I manually want to update. No special settings here, just plain standard windows settings.

Misunderstanding;
What I say is : When updates are applied which need a reboot, it won't go without, well, that reboot. So, don't think that such an update will suffice with shutting down (which actually was your command) to leave the finishing of it till another week when you switch on that PC again. It will re-boot.

Anyway, I just found the culprit for that reboot into Normal OS without being Activated not working, and solved it for the next version (and adjusted the Release Notes to that). Not that it would have helped you in this situation.

Regards,
Peter

Great but I will not remove the line from my short Update Notes list before seeing it working like that myself.

I will just go back to normal OS before updating anything anyhow, most other things just do not work out as well in minimized OS too...
