Title: 30 | Windows 8 Tutorials - Change Registry for proper UAC rights
Post by: PeterSt on November 17, 2012, 02:40:03 pm
In Windows 8 UAC (User Account Control) will not be disabled by dragging down the slider all the way as we are used to from Windows 7;
There's still a level under it now, but it can't be set (nor seen) by the user. Only the Administrator account (which isn't enabled by default hence you won't be able to use that account) can use that setting. But this is not the way to do it. Instead XXHighEnd applies a hack.

Watch out : After the hack has been applied (XXHighEnd automatically does this), we will not be able to run Metro applications. To do that, we must "hack back". This is what you see explained below.

Stuff like the below normally is accompanied by "make a backup of your Registry first !". So, that's out (but you really will be okay without it).

Keep notice please : What is explained below, is what XXHighEnd applies herself today (so you will be informed about what happened). At the end we'll apply the hack-back for when Metro Apps are needed.

Old hack text (which applied all manually)

  • Rightclick on the Metro Desktop and choose All Apps (in the bottom right corner). Find the "Run" app and click it.
    In there, type RegEdit and run that.

  • Go to :
    LocalMachine/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Policies/System

  • Find the EnableLUA property within the above key. If all is right it now has a value of "1". Change that to "0";
    Rightclick on the property and choose Modiy. Enter 0 instead of the 1 (or whatever) in there.

  • Now you can run XXHighEnd as you were used to from Windows 7. Notice that this is NOT "Run ad Administrator". So, just normally (double)click it to start.

    Watch out : This assumes the content of "Windows Tutorials - Install .Net 3.5" to have been applied FIRST. If not, a Windows message will appear telling you to install "the feature". This can be done on-line, but it was not tested. See that Tutorial please.

Keep in mind : Once you are going into the UAC settings again and change something in there (that slider position - even when set back to the bottom position and in effect you changed nothing), the above hacked value will be back to 1 again and has to be re-hacked to 0 per the above description.

End old hack text

Hack-Back

Actually it has been explained already per the above "old" text;
What we need to do is go into User Accoutn Control, move the slider (which is at the bottom) up and down (or to wherever you want it), and reboot. Don't forget the reboot or otherwise nothing happened at this time.
So to be clear, when you want the lowest "User Account Control" setting and wish to run Metro Apps in the mean time, you will find the slider at the bottom position, and in this case (lowest control) you again want it in the lowest position. So, this needs the slider to be moved up and down to the bottom position (again). Then reboot.

Also when you edit before mentioned Registry entry from the 0 you will see - caused by XXHighEnd - to 1 (the lowest slider position), you will need a reboot to make it work.

In this stage you won't be able to run XXHighEnd, BUT, each time you attempt it will set the value back to 0 and forces a reboot (after your approval). Then you can't run Metro Apps, and ... etc.

Peter,

If you can apply the hack every time xxhighend is launched that is an excellent idea.  I believe UAC changes require reboot, however. :-(

What is even better, if possible, is the option to restore UAC when xxhighend closes, so that "metro" apps can be utilized upon reboot.  These apps will become very important to desktop use, and I'm already wanting to play with them but want to play with my xxhighend too.  :-/

If you can hack off/hack on UAC you've got a buyer in me.  Even with the great sound Win 8 gives my ASIO driver on WMP, xxhighend does even better, and under Win 8 is the most natural, black background I've heard to date.  I highly recommend everyone jump on board as soon as possible to try it for yourself .
