Title: 0.9z-7 - Volume control Post by: christoffe on August 24, 2012, 07:27:47 pm Something is wrong with my NOS1 because fuses are blown at the PA for about three times and therefore I changed back to the WEISS Minerva. (since two years)
The Minerva has a volume control installed, so I set the VC to max and adjusted the SPL via the VC (normally ~-22) of XXH. SQ was less sophisticated as expected. Then I changed the VC vice versa, XXH to 0,0 and VC with the Minerva and some dramatic changes occur. A real tight bass and an unbelievable holographic soundstage not experienced with the NOS1 (which has a failure) before. I do believe VC at XXH to 0,0 is the thing. Of what I recall your amps are DC coupled. So with the blown fuses I'd merely think some nasty feedback from the amps is happening. Since you relate this to PA ... you do know that PA does not engage at a volume of 0.0, do you ? VC = Volume Control... When you are going to reconnect your NOS1 keep the following in mind: A little time ago there was a thread about attennuation on xx and NOS1 sound quality. It was advised NOT to play XX full scale (0dB attennuation). I once had a poweramp with very little gain attatched to my NOS1 and a can confirm that the NOS1 sounds a lot better with 6dB of attennuation. regards, Coen Title: Re: 0.9z-7 - Volume control Post by: christoffe on August 25, 2012, 08:36:51 am Since you relate this to PA ... you do know that PA does not engage at a volume of 0.0, do you ? Regards, Peter Hi Peter, PA = Power Amp Nothing serious with the power amp. The DC contol of the amp has a limit of <600mA and then the fuse .......... . I will send the NOS1 for a check and update to you by the end of next week. Some details via email later. I connected the NOS1 to a preamp, but the SQ is horrible compared to the direct connection with the poweramp. The Weiss Minerva (firewire connection to the PC) is a DAC with a Volume control via relays and the SQ with XXH 0.9z-6 was less demanding compared to the NOS1 in 2011. But with the release 0.9z-7 the sound quality of the Minerva is different with the 0,0 setting. The improvement is really astonishing, it is a new world. So I believe the SQ of the NOS1 (without preamp) with 0.9z-7 at 0,0 and a gain control, in what ever way, will be another major step foreward. Z7 is indeed very different from previous releases. I am exploring all new optimal settings for my setup. I think is is still too early to draw conclusions at comparisons. Still, a lot of experimenting with xx volume settings, attennuators and preamps has been done before, browse the nos1 threads to your advantage! Regards, Coen |
