Title: High Efficiency Speaker Recomendation Post by: boleary on April 17, 2011, 02:59:16 pm My amp is 35 Watts. My current speakers are very good but seem, at times, a bit overwhelmed by the richness of the mid range the NOS1 puts out. Any suggestions for good high efficiency speakers one could pick up on the used market? I was looking at the Klipsch Heresy III, given my space restrictions, but reviews on them are too varied. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I am a big fan of relatively modest amps driving easy load high sensitivity speakers. I have Avantguard Duos but any of their range would be very an excellent bet. They are all genuinely over 100db/w sensitivity. I bought used more than 10 years ago and have not looked back. I had Quad ESL63s before which became second system speakers for a while but whilst I loved them I simply could not afford the power amps to really control them well at the time. Now I use gainclones amps with the Avantguards and get remarkable results :). The only down sides I can think of is that Avantguards are very large in a domestic setting (which may not be a god thing for you) and they are rare used. The other speaker that would be on my list are Living Voice Avatars, they are made in Nottinghamshire, close to where I used to live. Always excellent reviews offering with high sensitivity and a very easy load to drive. Best Nick. It is not that if you have a pair you should put them to eBay right away (says me), but if you are looking for something else and more affordable, it could be a good idea to get yourself something I have (115dB sensitive). The person involved may tell about it more objectively ... (I never heard AG's). Where do you live? I have a pair of Bert's earlier design speakers that you could have a listen to etc. They are Oris 200 with AER MD1 driver sat on Onken bass cabinets with Vifa long-throw drivers. I run them with an 8 watt tube amp and Berts Gainclone for the bass. Brian, I live near Philadelphia, US, so unless you are yachting this way, its probably not feasible to give your speakers a listen, though I'd love to hear them! Given my domestic "tranquility", Nick, I best stay away from the Avant Guards, there is already enough discussion under this roof about volume, "wires sticking out" and general size of audio gear, so very large speakers in my domestic setting just won't work....if I want to keep it "domestic". I'm keeping my eye on Audiogon for any of Bert's speakers in the US.
