Title: WiFi impeded noise ? Post by: PeterSt on January 28, 2011, 11:50:13 pm Today I ran into something by pure coincidence. Look below. This shows the idle noise of the Phasure NOS1. Normal noise level is the "band" you see in the middle. Peaks of say 20uV (7uVRMS). But now there are peaks of near 130uV as well. All on the "plus" side. Should still be totaly inaudibe, but not as things should be.
TV was on, and my son was playing a game on his SP3. I asked him whether he could shut that all off for a moment so I could check. Before he had done that, all suddenly was ok again. Huh ? Then it appeared that he paused a download in order to shut all off, and it appeared to be the cause ... It's not normal WiFi which is always in the room, and we explicitly checked that on another WiFi PC (downloaded something :)). The WiFi is in no way connected to the Audio PC and the analyser, so it looks that the PS3 (actively) receiving/transmitting WiFi must be the cause. Btw, the PS3 *is* at half a meter distance (above it) from the PC at which this was going on. And one meter from the DAC. I guess not many "development labs" have the ability to ever find out such a thing, but as you may know, this is not a normal development lab here, although it often looks like it. So here you go; another device which just - most probably through air - degrades sound. At least theoretically. I hope you can get some advantage out of this. Peter Title: Re: WiFi impeeded noise ? Post by: PeterSt on January 29, 2011, 11:18:29 am Puh, I don't know. But to keep in mind for now : I am not saying that this is about the WiFi waves themselves. I mean, they are not much directional (not for in-room useage) and will be all over the place. But, of course when a transmitter is nearby the signal will be stronger. So, I was merely thinking about the transmitter maybe radiating something which is not "WiFi" as such. Just radiating something like a switching PSU could do.
But it really needs some testing to find out. Maybe I should start with switching off WiFi in general, and look what happens to the noise. |
