Title: NOS1 vs Empirical Audio Off Ramp/Overdrive DAC combo Post by: arvind on January 14, 2011, 01:34:55 pm After completing one week with NOS1, I wanted to share my experience vis a vis the Empirical Audio combo. The NOS 1 delivers what Peter had promised, scintilating highs, tight clean bass but the mids are a bit thin & lean, especially around the vocal range. Maybe it still requires to break in.
More update after a week or so. Peter congratulations in designing an outstanding product. Keep in mind the last two weeks of the first month; those are the most important for breaking in.
On little tip maybe, and which possibly didn't slip into your mind yet : If you still have the same speakers as before ... you can time align the drivers. Now think that maybe this is necessary again. At a certain stage I experienced that "problem" myself. So, imagine that the output waves are more "tight" (read thin - less "wobbling") and that time alignment becomes more important (critical) compared to before. You will know best yourself whether this ever *can* matter, but from theory I think it can. Finally completed the "so called" break in period of 30 days & for whatever it is worth here are my comments. Firstly I would not go back to the Empirical Audio Combo; that indicates something, doesnt it???? Having said that, the main difference between the two is the sound transparency. Listening to Empirical Audio is like having the sound filtered through a fine curtain. However the difference is not like night & day on a scale of 10, if NOS 1 is 10, then the Empirical would be a 8.5. Great job Peter, this NOS is not coming back to you, unless you have a big upgrade coming up. Arvind |
