Title: How to build the Ultimate PC? (December 2010)
Post by: pedal on December 03, 2010, 02:04:07 pm
Gentlemen,

Can you pls help me? I am building a new PC to work (exclusively) with XX and Phasure NOS1 DAC.
It shall be top notch. I want it all:

Best sounding OS
Best processor
Maximum RAM
Best RAM software
Flashdisc
Quiet fan
Midi tower cabinet
etc...

-Can someone pls give me a specific "shoping list" what to buy of hardware and software? (Probably other entusiasts can benefit from such a list too).

-----------

Thanks in advance!

Come on guys, are there no one who can come up with some specc's here?
Maybe typing "ultimate" was a little over the top. Let's call it "very good for running XX".

I don't need the exactly name and type of each component, just some basic guidelines.

Thanks in advance!
 :thankyou:

Hey Pedal,

Maybe in between November and December 3 nobody has a more fresh experience ? I mean, since you explicitly ask for "now", nobody may know about "now". My system is 3 months old I think (or 2), but apparently not suitable for you anymore. Haha.

This is the newest, and I think you will know it : http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=1443.msg13980#msg13980
But over one month old already of course. And 18 days not updated. :) :)

Peter

Yes, that thread is a good starting point. But, then - what about the different RAM software, as discussed resently?

Hi pedal,

I don't really have much to share I'm afraid. But my Vertex2 SSDs seem to work well, as does RAMDisk. I would advise that you get the fastest RAM that you can though, which will depend on the mobo you choose - I went for top-line G. Skill RAM, but I don't use the supplied RAM fans.

I'm not sure how much it really helps, but I run the PC from a 1kva mains isolation transformer - just trying to minimise any noise that the PCs power supply might be putting back into the mains supply. Again, I don't really know exactly how much this helps...

Good luck!

Mani.

Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor connection

Just the notice that either can have a cable length of 10 meters (also VGA but use a better cable). So, generally it won't be a problem to have the PC near the stereo or in a (more silencing) cabinet somewhere, while you control all from this 10 meters distance.
Also notice that keyboard and mouse can have 15 meters easily (just use extension cables), while with VGA I don't know. But, for VGA extension solutions exist over CAT5 and in the end you'll always get were you want.

Could someone tell me if the Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor connection must be made with a cable or could be made wireless?. Is the wireless connection creating some kind of harmful interference?

Yes, very harmful. Never do that. Still not sure about Bluetooth though (might that exist for keyboard/mouse connection).

Btw, I dropped my IR remote as well.

Hello juanpmar,
I have my monitor for about 5 meters away from my pc......its connected by hdmi cable and usb , as far as monitor has usb hub inside......so then i can use my wireless keyboard and mouse inserting their wireless dongle into the monitor itself....but not in the pc.....and i hope it helps too :)     the monitor is Samsung T260.....just in case :)

Thanks Sergero and Peter, man I´m lost with this issues of PC configuration... Yes, it´s a good idea to use the wirless keyboard and mouse connected to the monitor, if Peter doesn´t say don´t do that again
Sergero do you have the monitor connected to the pc with both the USB and HDMI cables?

Yes.

And I also want to ask what processor is preferable for building an audio pc .......should it be the dual core or the quad core of the same price range?
Anyone?

My advice at this moment ? quad.

As a matter of fact I will be checking out 8 (quad hyperthreaded) per tonight as a serious attempt to improve on SQ.
Not sure what will happen, but I have some ideas ...

I think quad core is better. Just now I´m finishing the configuration of my new dedicated computer to play with the Phasure NOS1 dac. I´ve tried to follow the Peter´s computer as a guide as much as possible. I´d appreciate any sudgestion before I order it next week:

-   Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bits - OEM

-   Processor:  Intel Core i7 870

-   Motherboard:  Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe

-   Memory:  PATRIOT Viper Xtreme Series - 16GB (4x4) DDR3-1600Mhz 8-9-8-24

-   CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P SE2

-   HHD: 2 units of Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, 1.5TB Maestro SATA - 32MB Buffer

-   SSD: Patriot SSD Inferno 120GB 2,5" SATA

-   Power S.: Corsair CMPSU-AX750 - 750W

-   Video Card:  Asus GeForce ENGT240 SILENT/DI/1GD3/A (no fan)

-   DVD LG 22X OEM SATA

-   Case: SilverStone Fortress FT02R (three 180mm fans and one 12mm fan)

2 juanpmar :
what about ASUS P7Q57-M DO
it has graphics inside so you will not need separate videocard  .....i think it may help for better cooling inside the case and less power consumption
why not to use desktop case btw?
and what ssd is for?:)

The use of the SSD will be for different posibilities:

1- To put there the OS
2- To put there the OS and the XXHighEnd
3- To put there just the Galleries

An independent Graphic Card gives me more chance for future and now unknown possibilities. I have enough power with a 750w power supply and I thing there isn´t problem to cool it with the three 180mm fans inside the case.

I thought about the Velociraptor 10.000rpm but I wanted a silent pc as much as possible and the 10.000rpm are more noisy than the 7.200rpm. Still could be an alternative to consider. As I can see in the forum there are different opinions about where the OS and XXHigEnd should be installed  and it seems to me that nothing is still definitive. So maybe I´ll get also a Velociraptor in the next future depending on the experiences of other people.

Peter or someone else asked about the different models:
