This afternoon, exactly happened what I could predict after plugging out and in the mains plug from the PC, and at hearing a "click" like a spark jumps somewhere. I had this before allright, but this time the PC went on for a fraction of a second (after pressing the power button) and next went off again, and I though ... uh-ohh ...

And empty SSD.

So yes, in my imagination some "static" electricity or wrong voltage peak otherwise can destry an SSD. Why not ?
But that sure won't happen to an HDD ...

Sadly this concerns the Devleopment Audio PC, and while the main program was backed up yesterday, the one less changed (sadly XXEngine3.exe) was backed up July 3 the last time. So, not very many changes in there (except for the "SFS" changes from the last few days), but *what* did I change in there eh ? :cry: Ok, I keep a log of things in the main program, but still.

Also not the best thing, is that the real backup is on another SSD (which died on me earlier) - and which worked the last time I tried - does not today. Not anymore. Maybe it can be repaired. On that one are the further helper programs which actually never change, but still I don't have them anymore. Ok, maybe on the HDD I used before that first SSD.

Again I think SSD's are not up to their job. Not the real job. Nice for a gadget, but nothing serious should be stored on it. Ah, my Galleries were on there. Also gone of course. :aggressive:

I ordered a new mobo and nice i7, so tomorrow that should be up and running, but in the mean time I'm a fool not to make regular full backups.
So now I better get drunk. :evil:

But be warned. It can happen to you too.

You will learn from it, regarding new CPU and mobo in relation with SQ etc.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Although it probably would have happened to any SSD, can you tell us what make/model you were using?

Oh, and I have nothing of value sitting on my SSD. Just XX!

Well Roy, that's the positive side of things. A good reason to get some more modern stuff after nearly 4 years of service.

Always look at the positive side of things, hehe

Means a lot of extra work for you,

But still keep us updated about your "new" findings, I mean everything.
You are so used to your previous setup, now I am curious about what you might find.

I don't use Galleries.

Right now, I have the front cover jpeg (and for some albums the back cover jpeg) sitting in the same folder as the music files for that album. XX displays the front/back cover perfectly.

Should I be using Galleries? What would that do for me?

By creating a gallery, you get all the coverart on c: drive (SSD)
This with the advantage of faster scrolling thru your music gallery.
Gallery can be created in the library section of xx.

At least I got the Vista boot running again. And no matter what, the data was on that disk anyway. So, no programs lost, only almost 3 months of minor scattered work on XXEngine3. Minor, except from the extensive walkthrough on bugs in the resampling code from a few days back. Just a matter of doing that again (which is 15,000 lines of code, sadly).

But I was in bed last night, and suddenly knew where I made the mistake (about my backup behaviour). I thought :

An SSD won't crash like a HDD. It *will* -at some stage- not allow you to boot. That's common stuff, and to my experience the SSD is more prone to that (just more verile or something). So, no problem, because you just connect the SSD to another system, and there is your data.

Not if it can wipe that out with one finger click ... And that is what happened.

eek !! .... I bought a couple of those a few weeks back. ( Fingers crossed ! )

I should be safe though. Our electricity is reliably supplied with good old atmosphere polluting brown coal, unlike some countries that rely on windmills and the vagaries of the wind gods  :evil:

Peter, I'm very sorry to hear that  :( Especially that you've done so much work last days and the new versions was almost ready. I never keep important stuff on system drive, regardless if it is HDD or SSD. And if I do, I keep a backup, that I bet you will also have once you set up the new PC :)

What a pain; I feel for you. I've had similar situations. I always hate recreating stuff. Once is good, twice sucks.

In my experience HDDs are no less prone to die as SSDs, it's just a matter of luck.
SSDs are just memory and memory can fail, while HDDs can break,although recovery in spinning discs done by specialized firms and very expensive, IS doable while for SSDs i think not.

Better to backup that library and to make a raid1 of SSDs for my next rig :)
