With my new desktop and Windows 7, I now get clicks and pops playing large (8 to 15 minute) 24/96, flac or wave files no matter what the split file size is . With my laptop/Vista I could  go as high as 125 split file size with these same files and not have click and pops as long as I disabled my wireless card. Not so with Windows 7. Any suggestions?

Playing large 16/44 files is not a problem AND they never sounded so good!

What does the DPC latency checker shows ?

This could be related to the power scheme of W7 (Start--->control panel--->>power options)
Dont know for sure but try the: High Performance scheme.

Thanks Roy. DPC shows very low latency, better than my laptop. Also, I set the power options to high performance. It definately reduced the gaps but not completely. I'm thinking there is some reource intensive program running in the backround but am not sure how to figure that out. I think I'll try disabling programs that automatically start up when the computor is turned on,  but that makes me vervious cause I'm really not that knowledgable about computors.Am at work now so I can't test till this evening. Any suggestions appreciated!

You must have "priority" issues. And notice Windows 7 behaves differently to what you are used to here.
So, Appointment Scheme ? The Player/Thread Priorities ?

Btw, I can imagine you have some i7 or something like that processor. If that is so, shut off Hyperthreading.
I don't know myself how to do that with this processor; probably somewhere in the Bios.

Yep, I've switched mine off using the BIOS facility (and also gone from 4 to 2 cores, to use XX's core appointment effectively). But this may be mobo-dependent...

With my laptop my external music drive was connected to the computor via firewire, now its connected to the desktop via usb. Could this be the cause? Don't have a firewire port on the desktop. Just wonderin'. I have a  1 terabite drive ordered that will be installed in the desktop to be the new "Music" drive. Am hoping this clears the gaps up.

Aha ! YES that matters ... because you're also using USB for the HiFace (I think). And *THAT* is not allowed !!

But if it's a kind of continues clicks I guess it's something else; It should only "hold up" de audio when file transfer is in order ...
In any case, try to play an album which has been copied to the OS disk (by you) in advance ...

What mobo do you have, because it probably does have a FW port,
only its on the mobo itself and you need to add a FW bracket.

Better use eSata btw, there are brackets for that too.

But get an internal hdd, would be better. (at least one)
You can also open-up the external drive you have and take the hdd out and put it directly in your PC.

Thanks Roy. I've copied a few of the tracks to the c drive of the desktop and I still get a few clicks and pops. I've tried all core appointment schemes and priority settings without success. Am going to apply the vista/windows 7 tweeks discussed here and see if that helps. Tis a bummer cause the GUI functions soooo much better than with my laptop, but gotta have clitch free high rez! May send the computer back if I can't get this sorted out and have somebody build me one that does it all  ;).

So you only have this with larger (8 minute and up) files ? (yes, that's what you said).

Can you describe the interval to me ? I only now realize that with "high resolution" (see title) you mean 96KHz.

Although a bit depending on your answer, I would try to set the Device Buffer higher (4096). In any case, please do so, and try to describe the difference you (may) perceive.

Lastly, what happens when you use Engine#3 ?

Well am still trying to work this out. Its very weird that with no music playing in xx i get some clicks and pops if I have my amp on and the highface connected BUT when playing a 16/44 or 24/88 file in XX there are no clicks or pops at all, at least not ones I can hear. I can even set the split file size to 135 with the 24/88 file and its smooth as silk, no unwanted noises. The ONLY time it happens is when I play a 24/96 file. Smaller 24/96 files are not as effected as larger files. Increasing the buffer to 4096 seems to help a little but not much. There does not seem to be any pattern to the interval between the clicks. I haven't tried Engine 3 yet but will let you know. Off to work now. Have a great day!

Fixed....somehow. As soon as I unplugged the now, backup external hard disc after transfering music files to an internal, secondary one all unwanted sounds, whether playing no music or 24/96 files, ceased. Should have listened and gotten a desktop a long time ago, quite a pleasant upgrade  :)

Yes.

In fact, music played off the c drive or the secondary internal drive still had clicks and pops as long as the usb external drive was plugged in. It never occurred to me that that was the problem. Before totally disconnecting it, I tried it in every usb port with no luck. The drive was a relatively new Western Digital 500 gig drive.
