Title: volume control Post by: silverear on January 06, 2010, 07:53:30 am hi all, was wondering if the newest version of xxHE will offer a quality volume control for use as the main system volume control? I dont have any other way to control my system volume. also, i plan to use the tube audio design tdac. http://www.angelfire.com/biz/bizzyb/TDAC.html can anyone tell me if this would be a good match with xxHE? this is all new to me. i dont even have a pc yet. any advice will help.
thanks Phillip Title: Re: volume control Post by: PeterSt on January 06, 2010, 09:32:54 am Hi there Philip !
Those around here for some longer will confirm the "quality" of the digital volume control. And worse : It is the very best around since it operates lossless (meaning : after attenuation the original data ca be reproduced from the attenuated file). Nobody does or has that. Notice that with gueranteed no losses (of information/resolution) you need to play 16/44.1 material onto a 24 bit DAC (which you have) and can attenuate 48dB then. I myself don't use any preamp or other means of analogue attenuation (which, I say, would kill sound). Your DAC looks very suitable to me, with its most important 24/192 input and no further filtering (as the specs tell), allowing for Quad Arc Prediction (as people in here tend to denote the software filtering - introduced per 0.9y-4). (But notice that in short time I'll be producing a 24/384 NOS/Filterless DAC myself -> just in case you're still in decision mode - and in combination with XXHE it should be the best in the world ). If you are up to getting a PC ... please consider a desktop or anything which is not a laptop. Laptops will work, but a desktop (or larger) is a 100 times more convenient and with problems MUCH more easier at solving them ! (and the less experienced you are the more important this becomes). Don't hesitate to ask any other question, and take it you will get there. With or without help. And oh, :welcome: Peter Title: Re: volume control Post by: silverear on January 06, 2010, 08:18:20 pm just got this comment from a XXHE user. "The adjustments are a bit fussy as the player must first stop, then it allows the volume to slide, then it restarts the player." will this be the case with the newest version of XXHE?

This was so a year ago. Not anymore. And where Arc Prediction slowed it down in 0.9y-4 (thus, it could take 5 seconds to come through) in 0.9y-5 this is back to around half a second (for QAP and a 2.4GHz cpu). Most of it is here : http://www.phasure.com/index.php?topic=642.0 But it's a bit scattered over other topics these days (my own fault ). I always play in unattended and use Autohotkeys. I do take a bit of care/time and wait for the volume to indicate changes via the wallpaper vol indication... no problem for me, I'm always within only a couple up or down changes... probably don't need to wait... but then again... I never seem to have problems with XXHE.
