Title: Engine #3 did not start within the expected time!
Post by: KUOYAO on January 05, 2010, 10:26:33 am
Hi Peter et al,

Lately my computer has been acting strange.  XX doesn't play anymore.  After pressing play, a few seconds later I get the error:

"Engine #3 did not start within the expected time!"

I suspected problem with my drives, but other players like foobar has no problem playing.  Any idea what's wrong?  This problem is quite frustrating...especially when I now depend on XX to pass the evenings.  :(

Lately my computer has been acting strange.  XX doesn't play anymore.

Have you by any chance installed Microsoft Security Essentials lately?

I did and suddenly my PC was very very slow or forced me to make a hardware reboot when I pushed "Play" in XXHE (attended or unattended)  The solution was / is in my case to set MS Essentials to NOT monitor files and programs real time. But I will use another antivirus software for sure. McAfee trial was running fine and I have a 3-user license for Kaspersky that I will try out.

I was actually going to open up a new thread about this issue when I saw your post. Software can and do collide sometimes - so please check other software you have installed after the problem occured if it is not MS Security Essentials that is causing the problems in your case. Best of Luck.

Per

Hi there KUOYAO,

If this isn't about what Per just described, please switch on your logging (Settings Area at the bottom), click Play and post the XX, X3 and X3PB log files (in the TemporaryData subfolder to your current XX folder) after the error messages appears. Don't touch anything else. Thus, after the error messages appears, let the error sit and get the log files.

We will get you running again !
Peter

After reading Per's comment, I realized that I performed several Microsoft Updates and upgrading my Avast anti-virus.  It is possible that either change caused some conflict.  After some frustrating hours of tweeking, I decided to do it the hard way.  Since I have a Microsoft Technet Subscription, I downloaded Vista Ultimate SP2 and did an "upgrade."  My computer went through several more hours of purgatory, then bit after midnight, Vista screen popped up and now XX plays again!  It seem the problem lies with Vista OS.

BTW, Vista now loads faster, but still scratching my head as to what went wrong.

Per and Peter, thanks for your help. ;)
